Inclement Weather Coming?

The quickest way to learn if SPU is closed or running late due to inclement weather is to call the Emergency Closure Hotline at (206) 281-2800. The phone line will be updated before 6 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.




Two Centuries of Women Preachers

Join Professor of Theology Priscilla Pope-Levison as she examines the history of American women evangelists at the next Church Leaders Forum on Tuesday, January 25, at 11:30 a.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Her talk is based on her latest book, Turn the Pulpit Loose: Two Centuries of American Women Evangelists. Dr. Pope-Levison is an ordained minister and has published books and articles on ecumenism, evangelism, women's history, and theology. SPU's Church Leaders Forums are a series of events exploring the creative interface between Christian faith, ministry, and contemporary cultural contexts. Yanik's Theatre Art on Display

One of the most talented set designers in the country is also a professor of theater at SPU. A retrospective of the creative work of Don Yanik, from set models to costume designs to production sketches, are now on display at SPU's Art Center Gallery, located at 3 West Cremona Street. For more than 20 years at SPU, Don has designed sets for 103 productions and 888 costumes. The show will run until February 5.




Falcon Legends Hall of Fame

The Falcon Legends Hall of Fame inducts the Class of 2005 on Friday, February 4, during a luncheon ceremony beginning at 11:45 a.m. in the Queen Anne Room of Gwinn Commons. This final group of charter members includes Lorna Griffin (track and field 1977-78), Bente Moe (cross country and track 1985-89), Bruce Raney (soccer 1978-81), Sergio Soriano (soccer 1978-81), and Laurel Tindall (gymnastics 1974-75). In addition, the late SPU President C. Hoyt Watson will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Faculty and staff can make reservations by calling the Athletic Office at (206) 281-2085. Reservations are $25 each and include lunch, dessert, and a commemorative program. Deadline for reservations is January 28.




SPU Basketball This Week

Welcome back your SPU basketball teams this week. The No. 4-ranked women's team plays Northwest Nazarene at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 13, and then take on St. Martin's on Saturday, January 15, at 5 p.m. The SPU men's squad squares off with Western Washington at 7 p.m. on January 15. All games are played in Royal Brougham Pavilion. Please bring cans of food to support Northwest Harvest's hunger relief program. Campus Compact Conference Coming Up in Portland

The eighth annual Campus Compact Continuums of Service conference, "Building Bridges: Values, Knowledge, and Skills for Vibrant Communities and Campuses," will welcome more than 500 colleagues to Portland, Oregon, April 11-13, 2005. SPU is a member of the Washington Campus Compact. Attendees from the Western Region and beyond will explore multiple perspectives on the relationships between higher education and communities, and the roles service-learning and civic engagement can play in invigorating them. The conference has become a national model for professional development among service-learning practitioners including faculty, administrators, students, and community partners. The conference provides practitioners opportunities to publicly present their work and network with service-learning professionals from the Campus Compact Western Region. New Weight Watchers Series for Faculty, Staff Begins Jan. 11

The 11-week winter faculty and staff Weight Watchers series will be held Tuesdays, 12:15-1 p.m. in MSLC 127, beginning January 11. Join this successful and fun program to realistically reach your health and fitness goals. Attend the first meeting for free, even if you're just curious. Summer Requests for Casey

February 1 is the deadline for placing your online request for a summer 2005 reservation in the Victorian-style officers' house at Camp Casey, SPU's historical beach property on Whidbey Island. All full-time, regular SPU faculty and staff are eligible. The turn-of-the-century house – once part of the coastal military fortress known as "Fort Casey" and now called the Faculty/Staff House – is available for your personal vacation use for a nominal booking fee of only $100. The fee includes a weeklong rental of either the east or west side of the house for you and your guests, access to the beach, gym, outdoor swimming pool, and other amenities at the conference center. All requests taken at this time are for stays at Camp Casey between June 20 and September 11, 2005. Please indicate five date choices on your request. Results will be available by February 28. Due to the high demand and way the "Casey Point System" works, it is unlikely a faculty or staff person will be offered a summer reservation more frequently than every third summer. Still, it is good to submit a request every January to get yourself placed on the summer waiting list. If you are offered a spot, it's a wonderful opportunity for you, your family, and friends to enjoy a memorable week in the quiet, rural, historical beauty of Camp Casey. Collect rocks on the beach, fly a kite, dine out, shop, explore Coupeville and Port Townsend, and relax by the heated swimming pool. Steele Publishes Article on Storytelling and Spiritual Formation

The Fall 2004 issue of Horizons: The Journal of the College Theology Society contains an article by Professor of Moral and Historical Theology Rick Steele titled "'Sufficiently Edified:' The Use of Stories in the Spiritual Formation of College Students." This article was originally presented at the Image/Lilly conference, "A Narratable World: The Theological Implications of Story," which was held at SPU on November 6-9, 2003. Rick argues that undergraduate theological education at Christian colleges and universities ought to concern itself with the spiritual and moral formation of students and suggests ways that the use of edifying stories can be especially conducive to that end. He unpacks the meaning of the term "edification" by reference to its use in Christian Scripture, and especially in a story of two fourth century desert fathers, Pachomius of Tabennisi and Macarius the Alexandrian. He then delineates two crucial qualities of spiritually edifying storytelling: (1) The story chosen must invite students to engage in candid self-examination; (2) the teacher must embody the virtues that the story illustrates, but at the same time tell the story in a way that does not draw attention to itself. One who seeks to edify others must avoid self-promotion, even while exemplifying one's lessons in one's conduct.

Professor of Music Ramona Holmes was quoted in a January 5 feature story in The Seattle Times on the after-school program “Arts Corps." Arts Corps is a nonprofit organization offering after-school classes for students in kindergarten through 12 grade in dance, poetry, sculpture, animation, and a variety of other genres. Newby, SPU Gospel Choir in The Seattle Times

SPU's Minister of Worship Stephen Newby and a musical montage he composed in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were featured in The Seattle Times on January 5. “Montage for Martin" was performed by several local gospel choirs, including SPU's Gospel Choir, on January 9 in Benaroya Hall. The production was narrated by Dr. King's eldest daughter, Yolanda King. Read the article online. More
