Dennis Bakke and Joy at Work

American Dream? Christian Dream?

The 2005 Winifred E. Weter Faculty Award Lecture will take place Thursday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. This year's lecturer is SPU Professor of History Bill Woodward, the first two-time Weter lecturer. Bill's topic is "People of Promise and People of Hope: A Response to the American Dream." The respondent is Dr. Richard Hughes, director of the Center for Faith and Learning at Pepperdine University. Light refreshments will be provided.




Make Your Own Gardening Calendar With Mary Robson

As part of SPU's "Gardening With the Experts" series, well-known gardener Mary Robson will give a special lecture on Thursday, April 21, at 7:15 p.m. The lecture is titled "To Dig or Not to Dig? To Clip or Not to Clip? How to Make Your Own Garden Calendar" and will be presented in Demaray Hall, room 150. Admission is free for SPU faculty and staff. Mary and SPU alumna Debra Prinzing '81 wrote the newly published book Washington & Oregon Gardener's Guide: Proven Plants for Inspired Gardens. Mary is responsible for the Master Gardener programs in Pierce and King Counties. She writes a weekly column in The Seattle Times titled “This Week in Your Garden," where she focuses on local gardening techniques and problems in Western Washington. SPU Theatre Presents “A Shayna Maidel"

The SPU Theatre Department presents the play “A Shayna Maidel" by Barbara Lebow, April 21-23 and April 28-30 in the E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m., and there will be a matinee performance on April 30 at 2 p.m. The play, a haunting portrait of two sisters separated since the Holocaust and reunited 20 years later, looks at one divided family's experiences. Old barriers and grief give way to a renewed sense of hope that a better future can rise from the ashes of the past. The play is directed by adjunct faculty member and guest director Karen Lund. The set design is by SPU Professor of Theatre Don Yanik. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students and seniors. Stress-Less Fest on April 13

Need a break? The SPU Wellness Committee is sponsoring a “Stress-Less Fest" on Wednesday, April 13, from noon – 4 p.m. Take a break and learn about stress while enjoying games, snacks, entertainment, prizes, massages, crafts, aromatherapy, and contests. The fest is free!

Nominations for President's Awards for Excellence Due April 15

The 2005 President's Awards for Excellence will recognize one faculty member and one staff member who have shown exceptional commitment to SPU's mission this year. President Eaton will announce the recipients at the annual President's Recognition Chapel on Tuesday, May 3, in Brougham Pavilion. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 check as a tangible expression of recognition and gratitude for their significant achievements and service to SPU. Nominations are due no later than Friday, April 15. You can nominate fellow colleagues for the president's consideration online, or contact Jan Higbee at jhigbee@spu.edu. More




Service Learning Scholarships Available

Scholarships are available for undergraduate and graduate students involved in service learning or other volunteer work within the United States. Students should visit the “Students in Service" (SIS) Web site at http://www.studentsinservice.org/home.html and complete the preservice orientation to see if their volunteer work meets the scholarship guidelines. Assistant Professor of School Counseling Cher Edwards is facilitating a “Students in Service" scholarship orientation on April 13 at 3 p.m. in Peterson Hall, Room 303. Students may contact Cher directly for more information at (206) 281-2286. Due to the response to the initial scholarships, AmeriCorps SIS program has more than doubled the scholarships allotted to SPU. The more scholarships we use, the more we will be allotted. Please tell your students about this wonderful opportunity for student scholarship.

Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Scholarship

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2005-06 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate this student or students for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in the name of the recipient to a charity of his or her choice. Online nominations are due by April 22 and can be found on the Office of Campus Ministries home page. More




Faith and Mental Health Care Conference on April 12

The School of Health Sciences and the School of Psychology, Family, and Community are sponsoring a half-day conference titled “Supporting the Mental Health of Youth and Families in the Community: The Interplay of Faith and Culture" on Tuesday, April 12. The conference is from 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Panel sessions include “Meeting Mental Health Needs Within a Faith Community" and “Incorporating Spirituality and Faith Into Culturally-Based Care." The conference is part of SPU's Living Well Initiative, a multidisciplinary educational program addressing the needs of persons and families affected by severe and persistent mental health conditions. SPU at TESOL Convention

SPU was well represented at the 39th annual Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Convention, held March 30-April 2 in San Antonio, Texas. Kathryn Bartholomew, director of the M.A.-TESOL program, was one of the speakers at the Christian educators in TESOL colloquium titled "Respecting Religious Differences in English as a Second Language Classrooms." In another session, Kathryn gave an overview of the program's course titled “Professional Issues and Ethics" with Nancy McEachran, practicum coordinator. Assistant Professor of TESOL Katya Nemtchinova was a participant in a panel discussion titled "Language Development of Non-Native English Speaker Teachers in TESOL Programs." She also organized a panel discussion titled "Voices of Non-Native English Speaking Graduate Students in North America." SPU graduate student Mila Ng Tari was one of the participants in that discussion. Katya was also the faculty sponsor of the SPU team that helped to organize the Graduate Student Forum held in conjunction with the convention. SPU students Heather Anderson was the student team leader, assisted by Sueanne Parker, Mila Ng Tari, and Keith Van Eaton. M.A.-TESOL adjunct faculty member Nancy Ackles also attended the convention, along with graduate student Tasha Essen. SPU's graduate students will have prime responsibility for organizing the Graduate Student Forum at the 2007 TESOL convention, which will be held in Seattle.




Vogt, Ziemann Present at Conference

Eric Vogt, associate professor of Spanish, and Michael Ziemann, associate professor of European Studies and linguistics, presented papers at the 15th annual conference of the North American Christian Foreign Languages Association at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois, March 31-April 2. Eric's paper was titled "John Wesley's Sephardic Portion: Psalm 63" (which will appear in Methodist History, July 2005). Michael's papers were titled "The Third Reich's Colonial Epic: Ohm Krueger ('Uncle Krueger')," and "A Thorn in Simba's Paw."

Congratulations to Ruth Adams, university registrar, Kenda Gatlin, associate registrar, and Janet Ward, associate vice president for information and data management, for their professional development articles published by the Pacific Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers. The enrollment management topics include “Financial Literacy and Retention" (Ruth Adams), Building Your Dream Team: Staff Development (Kenda Gatlin), and “Data-Driven Decisions: Using Data to Inform and Influence Decision Makers" (Janet Ward).




Spina's Book Now Available

A book by Professor of Old Testament Frank Spina titled The Faith of the Outsider: Exclusion and Inclusion in the Biblical Story is now available. The book is published by Eerdmans Publishing Company.




Farewell Party for Sig Swanstrom on April 12

A farewell party for Society of Fellow's Director Sig Swanstrom will be held Tuesday, April 12, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Walls Advancement Center. Sig was recruited in 1999 to re-engineer The Society of Fellows organization. He is also an SPU alumnus, Class of 1973. His last day at SPU is April 15.

Eaton Named to Elections Commission

SPU President Philip Eaton has been named to the newly appointed King County Elections Commission, which will investigate the county elections office's handling of the Washington 2004 elections. The president was appointed to the 10-member commission by King County Executive Ron Sims. The commission is expected to issue a final report in July, including proposed reforms.
