|President's Symposium Chapel on May 19|
The Right Reverend N.T. Wright, bishop of Durham, England, is the guest speaker for the President's Symposium Chapel on Thursday, May 19, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church. His topic is "The Bible and Christian Imagination." Campus offices will be closed so faculty and staff can also attend this special chapel.
|Decoding The Da Vinci Code|
Conspiracy theories and naive incredulity abound in today's culture. How does the Christian faith take us from fantasy to freedom and faithfulness? Come hear N.T. Wright, Anglican bishop of Durham and one of the world's leading New Testament scholars, talk about the popular book The Da Vinci Code on Wednesday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. His talk is titled "Decoding the Da Vinci Code: The Challenge of Historic Christianity to Post-Modern Fantasy." In a world of calamity, uncertainty, and terror, where is the God of the Christian gospel to be found? "God, the Tsunami, and 9/11: The New Problem of Evil" is the title of a lecture by N.T. Wright, Anglican bishop of Durham and one of the world's leading New Testament scholars, on Thursday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. |Faculty Recital Featuring David Shockey|
SPU Associate Professor of Music David Shockey is the featured artist at the next faculty recital on Tuesday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. Professor Shockey will sing songs from 19th and 20th century French composers Debussy, Faure, Massenet, and others. He will be accompanied by his wife, Eleanor Shockey, on the piano. This event is free and open to the public.
|SPU's Third Annual Undergraduate Research Conference|
SPU' Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is Thursday, May 19. Student presentations and posters will run from 2-9 p.m. in the Miller Hall. The public is invited. For more information, call (206) 281-2150.
|Your Own Tuscany Garden|
As part of SPU's "Gardening With the Experts" series, well-known Northwest horticultural expert Marianne Binnetti will give a special lecture on Thursday, May 19, at 7:15 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. Her lecture is titled "Classic Garden Ideas Inspired by Tuscany." Binnetti is the author of Best Garden Plants for Washington and Oregon and writes a weekly question-and-answer column for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The lecture will provide basic, practical advice on plants, gardening techniques, and garden design. Tickets are $12 and can be ordered online by visiting the SPU Garden Tour Web site
|The Thalia Symphony Concert “What Love Tells Me"|
“What Love Tells Me" is the theme for the next series of concerts by SPU's orchestra-in-residence, the Thalia Symphony. The symphony, completing its 56th season, will perform the love songs of Mozart, Schumann, and Mahler on Saturday, May 21, at Rainier Beach Performing Arts Center, and Thursday, May 24, at First Free Methodist Church. Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door and are $12 general admission, and $8 for students and seniors. For more information, visit the Web site.
|Writing as a Vocation on May 24|
Milton Center Fellow Linda Wendling will present "Why Are You Kicking Me? A Second Look at Writing as Vocation" at a forum Tuesday, May 24, at 1 p.m. in Demaray Hall, room 150. Wendling, a fiction writer, will share her view of how a writer of faith might look at writing as a vocation from both spiritual, creative, and practical standpoints. The session will include a reading from her novel-in-progress, and questions are encouraged.
|Annual “Night of Beats" on May 20|
MOSAIC welcomes you to its annual “Night of Beats" on Friday, May 20, at 7 p.m. in Royal Brougham Pavilion. There will be many great hip hop performances featuring SPU students and community groups. Tickets are $5. The MOSAIC Club is a student-led group active in creating multicultural appreciation on campus.
|Literary Award Given by Image and SPU English Department|
Franz Wright is the 2005 recipient of the Denise Levertov Award, established in
2004 by Image: A Journal of the Arts and Religion and the SPU Department of English. The award is given annually to an artist or creative writer whose work “exemplifies a serious and sustained engagement with the Judeo-Christian tradition." Wright's poetry has been called “bracingly intelligent, weirdly funny, and sharp as cut glass." He will be presented the award at a special reception on Tuesday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Seattle Art Museum Lecture Hall. For more information, visit the Image Web site.
|Join the Nordic Club in the 17th of May Parade|
Seattle has a rich Scandinavian heritage and this year we are celebrating Norway's Centennial. The annual Constitution Day Parade on May 17 ("Syttende Mai") is the largest parade outside of Norway with thousands of people lining the streets. The SPU Nordic Club will again represent SPU and we'd like to invite everyone to join us for this special occasion. Bring your family and friends to commemorate this historic event. |May 20 Is Bike to Work Day|
The WRQ Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 20. Thirty-seven commuter stations will be located throughout Puget Sound for bike riders to stop and pick up free water bottles, snacks, city and county maps, bicycle commuting information, or to have bikes checked for free. |May Is National Bike Month|
The 2005 Group Health Commute Challenge is May 2-29. This is one of the biggest bike commuter events on the West Coast. If commuting by bicycle is a new experience for you, this is a great program to help get you started. For seasoned bike commuters, this is your chance to test your bike-commuting mettle by riding to work as often as you can during the month. Challenge yourself, challenge your workmates, and challenge other local businesses to be a part of the challenge. Just commute five times or more (round trips) during this month and be eligible for great prizes. The Cascade Bicycle Club offers classes in "urban cycling techniques" to get you started. |Time for Casey Fall and Winter Reservations|
Full-time faculty and staff members are eligible to make reservations to stay at SPU's Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. June 1 is the deadline to submit a request to be entered into the lottery for the chance to stay in one of the historic officer's houses. The total cost to use a house (for up to six nights) is only $35. View photographs of the houses and the Camp Casey area at www.spu.edu/casey. |Ferreiro's Academic Year Highlights|
Professor of History Alberto Ferreiro reports on his activities during the last
several months: Several of his articles on Episcopal authority in the sixth and
seventh centuries have been published in Annuarium Historiae Conciliorum
(Germany); Studia Patristica (Oxford), and Francia (Paris/Berlin).
Several of his articles have been published in encyclopedias, including one in
Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought; 12 in International Encyclopedia
of the Middle Ages (UCLA-Brepols), and nine in The New Westminster
Dictionary of Church History. His book reviews have appeared in Church
History and Anuario de Historia de la Iglesia. He has two books at the
press titled Simon Magus in Patristic, Medieval, and Early Modern Traditions
and Late Antique and Visigothic Iberia and Gaul, a bibliography with more
than 9,200 entries with subject and author indices. He led a Bible study on the
Gospel of John (September to February) and then on the Epistle of Paul to the
Romans (February to May.) He taught three modules of four hours each on pre- and
post-Reformation church history for the Archdiocese Catechetical Certification
Program in Mount Vernon, Lynwood, and Seattle. He gave four talks for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
for catechumens who entered into full communion on Easter Vigil. He has been asked to write for the Archdiocese the official booklet celebrating 150 years of Catholic schools in the Pacific Northwest. Finally, he is taking 24 students to the University of Salamanca, Spain for the 16th consecutive summer, including two Point Loma Nazarene students.
|Mvududu, Edwards Present at Students of Color Conference|
Nyaradzo Mvududu and Cher Edwards, assistant professors in the School of Education, recently made a presentation at the Washington State Multicultural Services Directors Council 14th annual Student of Color Conference. Their presentation was titled "Breaking Down Communication Barriers," which focused on cross-cultural communication skills.
|Fitch Elected to Board|
Cindy Fitch, assistant professor of biology, was recently elected as member-at-large to the executive board for the Western Regional Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (WAAHP). This regional board works together with the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions. Cindy also serves on the National Communication Committee.
|Cole's Authors Cover Story in Adjunct Advocate|
Brian Cole, coordinator of student programs, wrote the May/June cover story for the part-time faculty trade magazine, Adjunct Advocate. The article is titled "Breaking Into Textbook Publishing: The Field Is More Level Than You Think." Read the story online.
|Wolfe Speaks to White House Christian Fellowship|
Gregory Wolfe, SPU writer in residence and director of the new M.F.A. in creative writing, just returned from a trip to Washington, D.C., where he spoke to the White House Christian Fellowship and the Faith and Law Luncheon on Capitol Hill. His topic on both occasions was the importance of learning from the tradition of Christian humanism in our ideologically driven society.

An opinion piece by SPU President Philip Eaton appeared in The Seattle Times on May 15. He begins his editorial with these questions – "Is it possible that all of our universities, the American academy, both religious and secular, might have something to learn from that great Christian philosopher, poet, and leader of the people, Pope John Paul II? |Students Mentioned in Seattle Times Editorial|
SPU students were mentioned in a May 12 story by Seattle Times columnist Nichole Brodeur. The students, along with students from Seattle University, the University of Washington, and Seattle Central Community College, formed the Coalition for Global Concern (CGC) and put together "Darfur Awareness Week."
