|Ancient Rome and the Middle East|
“Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh: Ancient Rome and the Middle East" is the title of the annual C. May Marston Lecture on Thursday, February 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. The lecture will be presented by SPU's C. May Marston Assistant Professor of Classics Owen Ewald and is part of the 23rd annual European Studies Symposium. Refreshments will be served following the lecture. This event is free and open to the public.
|A Special Evening of Japanese Music|
In a program that moves from classical to jazz, Elizabeth and John Falconer combine the koto and shakuhachi in an elegant and meditative presentation of Japanese music on Wednesday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. in E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. The concert is titled “Echoes of Japan: Koto and Shakuhachi Duo En." This event is free and open to the public.
|Home Basketball Games This Week|
Don't miss the action when the men's and women's basketball teams play in Brougham Pavilion this week. On Thursday, February 16, the women host Western Oregon at 5:30 p.m. and the men host Western Washington at 7:30 p.m. Another double-header happens on Saturday, February 18, when the women face Humboldt State at 5 p.m. and the men take on Central Washington at 7 p.m. SPU faculty and staff receive complimentary general admission tickets (including spouse and dependent children) to all regular season home events in Brougham Pavilion. |Three-Point Giveaway at Feb. 16 Basketball Games|
If you and your family like winning free stuff, then don't miss the Coca-Cola Three-Point Prize Giveaway at halftime of both the women's and men's basketball games on Thursday, February 16. The first four participants to make a three-pointer will receive a free backpack and sweatshirt from Falcon Athletics and Coca-Cola. Falcon women host Western Oregon at 5:30 p.m. and the Falcon men host Western Washington at 7:30 p.m. Practice your three-pointers and you could be a winner. See you at the games, and go Falcons!
|Music Faculty Recital|
A special evening of vocal and instrument music featuring SPU faculty members will be held Friday, February 17, at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church, adjacent to the SPU campus. The concert features Julian Catford on guitar, Brian Chin on trumpet, Todd Gowers on bass, and tenor David Shockey and soprano Julie Kae Sigars. This event is free and open to the public.
|Campus Closed for Presidents Day|
SPU offices will be closed and daytime classes will not meet on Monday, February 20, in honor of Presidents Day. Evening classes will be held.

|SPRINT Summer Trip Applications Due|

The quickest way to learn if SPU is closed or running late due to inclement weather is to call the Emergency Closure Hotline at (206) 281-2800. The phone line will be updated before 6 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.
|Spring Quarter Registration|
Registration for Spring Quarter is coming soon. All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not admitted to a major will want to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their appointment time. Spring registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Friday, February 17. Spring registration for graduate students begins Monday, February 27. |Storytelling Lessons From Narnia|
Join University Presbyterian Church Senior Pastor Earl Palmer for an evening of great storytelling on Monday, February 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Using Lewis' Narnia as a case study, Reverend Palmer will explore elements of a good story, and why some tales are timeless. This event begins SPU's annual European Studies Symposium, and is free and open to the public.
|Europe Comes to SPU|
SPU's 23rd annual European Studies Symposium takes place on campus, February 13-16. Learn about European art, literature, culture, and more through presentations by faculty, students, and invited guests. The keynote speaker is SPU Professor of European Studies/German Michael Macdonald, who will discuss “European Studies: A Timeless Celebration" on Wednesday, February 15, at 3:30 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. The symposium is sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Division of Humanities, and the College of Arts and Sciences. All events are free and open to the public. The keynote speaker for SPU's annual European Studies Symposium is SPU Professor of European Studies/German Michael Macdonald. He will discuss “European Studies: A Timeless Celebration" on Wednesday, February 15, at 3:30 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. Macdonald is past president of the Pacific Northwest Council on Foreign Languages, and the Northwest Conference on Philosophy. He was instrumental in creating SPU's study-abroad program called “European Quarter," and directed the European Studies Symposium from 1996 to 2005. |Free Advice on How to Get in Shape|
Once again, exercise science students are looking for people who want to get into shape or trying to shake up their exercise routine. Exercise science students are available on a limited basis to help you design a program that is just right for you. If you are interested, stop by the Physical Education and Exercise Science office in Brougham Pavilion and sign up.

Vision Press, the printer for SPU's stationery and business cards, will be closed February 20-24. Orders placed between 10 a.m. February 7 and 10 a.m. February 14 will be delayed one day. Thanks to everyone for sending in photos of your pets. We've had a great response! You can still show off your pet by submitting a photo to the Fac/Staff Bulletin for the “Pet Photo of the Week." Faculty and staff are encouraged to send a photo of their pet, including the pet's name and a couple of sentences explaining the picture, to Fac/Staff Bulletin editor Tracy Norlen at firstname.lastname@example.org. Only pets related to SPU faculty and staff members will be accepted. (Those with multiple pets may submit one group photo or individual pet photos and descriptions.)

|Nelson Receives Grants From NOAA, NSF|
Professor of Biology Tim Nelson and a colleague at Western Washington University received research grants totaling $688,000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation. The grants will be used to study harmful marine algal blooms in Washington coastal waters. The research will focus on determining the causes and effects of large blooms of green seaweeds, or green tides. Read more online.
|Schermer-Sellers Leads CEU Trainings|
Regence Blue Shield sponsored two Continuing Education Unit trainings for their statewide licensed behavioral health panel of providers. The topic was collaborating with physicians in the care of patients and families coping with both biomedical and psychosocial symptoms. The invited trainer was Tina Schermer-Sellers, director of SPU's Medical Family Therapy post-graduate certificate program.

A paper by Professor of New Testament Jack Levison and Assistant Professor of Classics Owen Ewald titled “Josephus and Burial of Women at Public Expense" was published in the Italian journal Athenaeum
|Richards Named Vice President|
On January 26, Mitch Richards, guest services coordinator at Camp Casey, was installed as board vice president of the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce. Mitch represents the Fort Casey Inn and Camp Casey with his chamber involvement. Congratulations, Mitch!

|Parks Featured in Petersburg Pilot|
SPU Jazz Band Director Bill Parks was featured in the Petersburg Pilot (Alaska) on February 2. Bill traveled to Alaska to teach a concert band and jazz band workshop for two area high schools. Read the story online.

Sam Nelson, and his father, Professor of Biology Tim Nelson, are in two new advertisements produced by Children's' Hospital Medical Center.
