Welcome to SPU's Fac/Staff Bulletin

The Fac/Staff Bulletin is the weekly, internal newsletter for SPU faculty and staff. All members of the SPU community are encouraged to submit information to the bulletin at, or by selecting “Submit Bulletin Items" from the bulletin itself. The bulletin is published on Mondays, and deadlines to submit information are Thursdays. The editor is Tracy Norlen, news and media relations manager in University Communications. The bulletin is divided into six main sections.

Announcements highlight the major news and events on campus. All faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information, including department news, academic deadlines, campus events, and guest speakers. Digital photos and graphics are especially welcome. When possible, event information will be published in the bulletin two weeks prior to the event. Remember to plan ahead when submitting information.

Faculty and Staff News is for professional news related to your position at SPU or in higher education. Items of interest are conferences attended, book or articles written or published, presentations made, awards received, research completed, or a new title or position. Please don't be shy! We especially would like more professional news from SPU staff.

SPU in the News lists most of the print or broadcast media appearances by faculty and staff. If you've been used as a resource for a reporter, please let us know by submitting it to the bulletin.

Milestones is for personal news of interest to the SPU community, including births and adoptions, anniversaries, church service, mission trips, marriages, awards, and athletic accomplishments. (Or anything else you'd like the whole campus to know!). Digital photos are always welcome!

Pet Photo of the Week features pet photos submitted by faculty and staff. You are encouraged to send photos of your pet, including the pet's name and a couple of sentences explaining the picture, to Fac/Staff Bulletin editor Tracy Norlen at If your pet has already been featured, you are welcome to submit another picture and story. Preference will be given to those pets not yet featured in the bulletin.

Current Job Openings lists the most current information on open faculty and staff positions at SPU.

Finally, be sure to visit the SPU Classifieds for items to sell or buy, ridesharing, apartments or rooms for rent, lost and found, and volunteer opportunities. The SPU Classifieds can be accessed from the SPU home page under “Online Services."

Important Deadlines

Waitlist ends Tuesday, September 25. The SPU waitlist policy is in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25. The waitlist operates on a first-on, first-off approach. If space opens up in a waitlisted class, Student Academic Services (SAS) will contact students via email who have been registered from the waitlist.
Increasing Class Enrollment ends Tuesday, September 25. If you would like to accommodate the students on your waitlist, and the room capacity of the classroom would not be exceeded, please contact Tiffany Shelton, coordinator of schedules and publications, at or 281-2635 in SAS by 3 p.m. September 25 to have your class enrollment increased. In order to stop the waitlist on time, the timeline for increasing enrollment needs to match the waitlist deadline.
Last Day to Add/Drop Classes is Friday, September 28. Students are able to register, add and drop courses until 5 p.m. on Friday, September 28. After this time, web registration is no longer available for Autumn Quarter. This is the last day to register for classes, including those that meet once a week.
Other registration deadlines. Students wishing to take a course pass/no credit or register for an internship, independent study, dissertation, or individual instruction in music may do so in SAS (Demaray Hall 151) until 4:30 p.m., Friday, October 5. Thank you for your help in meeting these deadlines.

Submit Requests for a Spring Weekend at Camp Casey

Regular full-time SPU faculty and staff are invited to submit an application by October 31 to stay at the Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The beach property, once a part of the “Fort Casey" coastal military fortress, is available for your personal vacation use for a booking fee of $35. You may stay for a weekend or up to five nights. The Victorian house sleeps 10 people. You may use the gym, the private beach, and other amenities at Camp Casey. Requests will be accepted until October 31 for stays between February 1 and June 15, 2008. Please indicate three to five possible weekend dates on your request. Faculty and staff are invited to a free seminar presented by the Seattle Pacific Foundation and estate planning attorney Nancy Cahill of Holman Cahill Garrett Ives & Oliver on Thursday, October 4, noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. Faculty, Staff Receive Free Falcon Athletic Tickets!

The Falcons invite all faculty and staff to join us for another exciting year of SPU athletics, and it won't cost you a dime. Faculty and staff receive complimentary general admission tickets (including spouse and dependent children) to all regular season home events in Brougham Pavilion. Simply show your staff I.D. at the Brougham Pavilion ticket window. (Home soccer games at Interbay Stadium are not included in this free offer.)

Apply for Parking Online

Faculty and staff can now apply for parking online. To update your vehicle information, apply for parking, or review your parking status, log into the Banner Information System and enter the “Parking Information and Application" menu. Beginning in October, the popular “Pet Photo of the Week" feature will resume in the Fac/Staff Bulletin. Fac/Staff Bulletin Resumes Weekly Publication

The Fac/Staff Bulletin is published every week during the academic year. If you have information or event news, send it as soon as possible to Fac/Staff Bulletin editor (Tracy Norlen) at or submit an item directly from the Fac/Staff Bulletin. The next deadline is Thursday, September 27. The next publication date is Monday, October 1.


Trzyna Invited to Join “Every Church a Peace Church" Board

Professor of English Tom Trzyna has been invited to join the board of Every Church a Peace Church, headquartered in the Amish country in Pennsylvania, which is building a national network of churches committed to peace and justice (with the assistance of a large foundation grant). Current board members include Rev. C.T. Vivian, a leader of the Selma, Alabama, civil rights campaign; and other civil rights and peace activists. Tom is also a member of the board of Opening Blind Eyes, a two-year-old church and prison ministry that offers Eucharistic services, counseling, hospital visitation, domestic violence counseling, and aid to those in solitary confinement at the maximum security facilities in Monroe, Washington. Dr. Dwight van Winkle, a former SPU faculty member, leads this ministry. Faculty and staff members who are interested in either the peace or the prison project are invited to contact Tom for information and opportunities to get involved.

Henshaw Appointed to Statewide Committee

Assistant Professor of Nursing Chris Henshaw has been appointed to the Professional Nursing & Health Care Council of the Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA). This committee examines issues of interest to nurses in the state, focusing on research, education, and practice; prepares white papers on these issues; and makes recommendations to the WSNA board of directors. Her work on this committee is informed by her work as a pro tem member of the Washington State Nursing Commission, the regulatory board in Washington state.

West Achieves National Certification

Associate Professor of Nursing Barbara West recently achieved recognition as a certified nurse educator. This national certification is a recent addition to the nursing profession, recognizing expert academic educators.

Vogt's Article Published

Associate Professor of Spanish Eric Vogt published a ground-breaking article titled "Vínculos bíblicos herméticos: Cien años de soledad y el 'Real Arte'" in La Revista de Estudios Colombianos, the primary international journal dealing with Colombian history, politics, literature, culture, and the arts. The article brings to light hitherto unexplored dimensions of historical, cultural, and biblical symbolism cryptically alluded to in Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien años de soledad), published in 1967, for which Márquez won the Nobel Prize in 1982.
