|School of Education's Teacher Education Program Wins Award|
School of Education's Teacher Education program is the recipient of the Association of Independent Liberal Arts College of Teacher Education's (AILACTE) 2008 Models of Excellence Award for Partnerships. Only one university is selected for a Model of Excellence Award each year. The School of Education has more than 30 partners, including Dearborn Park Elementary School and Zion Prep Academy in Seattle, America Latina School in Guatemala, and Vision Appalacia in West Virginia. The school also collaborates closely with SPU's College of Arts and Sciences. The award will be presented at AILACTE's annual conference in New Orleans in February 2008. Congratulations!
|Autumn Quarter Grades Due Dec. 17|
Autumn Quarter grades are due in Student Academic Services (SAS) by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 17. Grades may be submitted to SAS via the web, in person, placed in the SAS drop box (located outside of Demaray Hall 151), mailed, or faxed to 206-281-2669. Timely submission of grades helps students and offices with important processes such as the academic dismissal process, disbursing financial aid, and processing enrollment verification. If instructors want grades to appear on the web before December 17, they need to contact Coordinator of Student Records Kelli Knapp at firstname.lastname@example.org so she can roll the grades to academic history. If there are challenges when grading students, please contact SAS prior) to the grading deadline. We may be able to assist with resolving the situation. |SAS Counselors Accepting Drop-In Appointments|
Undergraduate Academic Counselors in Student Academic Services will accept drop-in appointments with students during the first five days of the quarter on a first-come, first-served basis. These brief meetings are intended for students who have Winter 2008 scheduling and registration issues, or who are on academic probation. Faculty or staff who are working with students in these situations are welcome to encourage them to drop in for a brief meeting. Drop-ins will take place Thursday, January, through Wednesday January 9, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students may check in at the front desk of the Undergraduate Admissions and Academic Counseling Office in Demaray Hall 120.
|Women Volunteers Needed to Join Curves|
The Office of Human Resources is looking for five women interested in a free month membership to Curves, a women-only workout facility, located on Nickerson Street near campus. Curves would like to offer SPU faculty and staff a reduced corporate rate. To receive feedback on their facilities and customer service, they have made available five, one-month memberships. The first five volunteers will receive the complimentary, one-month membership. In return, volunteers will be asked to fill out a short survey. |Campus Weight Watcher Group Begins Jan. 15|
A 10-week Weight Watchers session begins on campus January 15 and runs through March 11. It's a terrific program for successful weight loss and good health. Weekly meetings are held Tuesdays at 11:45 a.m. for an hour in Marston/Watson Classroom 5/6. Registration is required. |Campus Cards for Faculty, Staff|
SPU faculty and staff are issued a campus card at no charge during their orientation period. The campus card is used for the following purposes: (1) photo identification, (2) meal-plan access, (3) building entrance, (4) SPU Library privileges, and (5) admission to, or discounts on, certain SPU-sponsored events (sporting events, theater productions, etc.).
If necessary, a faculty or staff member may obtain a replacement campus card for a $20 fee at the Office of University Services during regular business hours, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. If you lose your card or it is stolen, please notify University Services immediately so that your card can be given inactive status to ensure your security. If you have misplaced your card, you may purchase a three-day, temporary card for $5. It will allow you the faculty/staff meal rate at Gwinn Commons and access to the Library, but it is not valid for accessing Advantage and SPU Points. If you do not have a valid SPU campus card or a temporary card, you will be expected to pay cash at all food-service locations on campus. A campus card is for only your use. If you allow another person to use your card to access food service, building entrance, or identification, both parties will be subject to disciplinary actions. |Sacred Sounds of Christmas CD Available|
“The Sacred Sounds of Christmas" CD, featuring SPU's acclaimed choral and instrumental ensembles, makes a great Christmas gift. The CD offers an eclectic collection of readings and traditional and lesser-known Advent and Christmas music spanning several centuries. Proceeds benefit SPU performing groups. CDs can be purchased for $15 (includes tax) from Performing Groups Coordinator Kyle Feldman in University Communications in Lower Weter Hall. Cash or checks are preferred. CDs can also be purchased in the SPU Bookstore or through the website ($2.95 shipping charges apply).
|Peer Advisor Nominations Needed by Jan. 4|
The peer advisor selection process for 2008-09 is coming up fast, and we need your help in obtaining nominations for qualified candidates. Our campus is blessed with many students who have exceptional academic, spiritual, and leadership gifts. If you know students who rise above — leaders among leaders — we would greatly appreciate you nominating them for the selection process. The quickest way to learn if SPU is closed or running late due to inclement weather is to call the Emergency Closure Hotline at 206-281-2800, or visit the SPU home page. The phone line and home page will be updated before 6 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.
|Do You Have Family or Friends in Eastern Washington?|
The SPU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will tour Eastern Washington and surrounding areas during Spring Break, March 15-18, 2008. The choirs are now arranging bookings for their tour. If you have friends or families in the Eastern Washington area, please ask them if they would like to have the choirs perform in their church or school, or if they would be willing to provide a homestay for some of the students. University Players, a six-member drama troupe of SPU students, will visit Northern California during Spring Break, March 15-20, 2008. Show off your pet by submitting a photo to the Fac/Staff Bulletin for the “Pet Photo of the Week." Faculty and staff are encouraged to send photos of their pet, including the pet's name and a couple of sentences explaining the picture, to Fac/Staff Bulletin editor Tracy Norlen at email@example.com.
Check out the Community Forums available from the SPU home page under “Online Services." This is a great way for SPU community members to collaborate, share information, and exchange opinions and ideas.

The Fac/Staff Bulletin is published every Monday during the academic year. Deadlines are Thursday. The School of Education is pleased to announce that Sharon Hartnett, assistant professor of teacher education, has been informed that her manuscript titled "Does Peer Group Identity Impact Absenteeism in High School Students?" has been accepted for publication. Her article will appear in The High School Journal, published by the University of North Carolina Press.

Scott Edwards, assistant professor of marriage and family therapy, appeared November 19 on the “The Kindlings Muse," a well-known, local live podcast.
