|“Thursday Food for Thought" Begins January 17: George MacDonald, Imagination, and Suffering|
On January 17, Professor of Theology Kerry Dearborn reads from her book, Baptized Imagination: The Theology of George MacDonald at the first Winter Quarter “Thursday Food for Thought," sponsored by the Library. The event takes place January 17, 12:30-1:15 p.m., in the Library Reading Room. Dearborn's book is a probe of the theological sources of imagination, and explores 19th-century writer George MacDonald's profound insights into such areas as the nature of suffering and aging. Dearborn also examines MacDonald's influence on such authors as C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, and W.H. Auden. Bring a brown-bag lunch and ask questions of the author.

|Koenig, 37five Project Recipients in Chapel|
Associate Director of University Ministries Matthew Koenig is the guest speaker in chapel on Tuesday, January 15, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The recipients of Autumn Quarter's “37five" project will also be introduced. Koenig's topic is “Investing in God's Work."
|Faculty, Staff Invited to “Row and Run"|
Faculty and staff are invited to join the SPU crew and running team in the annual “Row and Run" on Saturday, January 26, at 8 a.m. This annual tradition involves the varsity crew on the water racing runners, joggers, or walkers on the land. (Runners can take any route they choose to beat the crew.) The "competition" also includes varsity athletes versus alumni, and an “Estimate Your Time" competition. Prizes will be awarded at a brunch in Falcon Lounge following the event. The competition starts at 8 a.m. behind the University of Washington Medical Building on the canal (runners can catch a van ride to the start line by meeting at 7:15 a.m. sharp at Royal Brougham Pavilion). The run is approximately 3.5 miles from the University of Washington to Third Avenue West and West Nickerson on the bike path (depending on the route you choose). All runners, friends, family, pets, and baby joggers are welcome to join. |Summer Requests for Camp Casey|
Full-time, regular SPU faculty and staff can make an online request for a Summer 2008 reservation in one of the Victorian-style officers' houses at SPU's Camp Casey Conference Center, located on historical beach property on Whidbey Island. The turn-of-the-century houses, once part of the coastal military fortress known as Fort Casey, are available for personal vacation use for a nominal booking fee of only $100. The fee includes a weeklong rental of a house for you and your guests, access to the outdoor swimming pool, gym, beach, and other amenities at the conference center. Enjoy the quiet, rural, historical beauty of Camp Casey, as well as the nearby towns of Coupeville and Port Townsend. All requests are for stays between June 16 and September 14. Please indicate five date choices on your request. The deadline to make a reservation request is February 15. Results will be available by March 15. Due to high demand and the “Casey Point system" for summer requests, it's unlikely for a faculty or staff member to be offered a summer reservation more frequently than every third summer. But you are encouraged to submit a request every January to get placed on the summer waiting list. |Exercise Science Majors Can Help You Get in Shape|
Senior exercise science majors are available on a limited basis to offer a variety of services to help faculty and staff with physical activity and fitness goals. Services range from instruction on a single exercise or physical fitness component to a complete fitness assessment and personal training. Students can also help find ways to work health-enhancing physical activity into daily tasks. To take advantage of this free service and help students earn practicum credit, please stop by the Physical Education and Exercise Science Office in Brougham Pavilion, or call 206-281-2081 and tell the receptionist what kind of service you desire. A record of your request will be made, and a student will contact you within a week to set up an appointment.
|Campus Weight Watcher Group Begins Jan.15|
A 10-week Weight Watchers session begins on campus January 15 and runs through March 11. It's a terrific program for successful weight loss and good health. Last quarter our group as a whole lost more than 100 pounds! Weekly meetings are held Tuesdays at 11:45 a.m. for one hour in Bertona 1 (new location). Registration is required. The quickest way to learn if SPU is closed or running late due to inclement weather is to call the Emergency Closure Hotline at 206-281-2800, or visit the SPU home page. The phone line and home page will be updated before 6 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.
|SPU Theatre Presents a Musical Comedy for All Ages|
SPU's Theatre Department will present HONK!, a delightful musical comedy adaptation of The Ugly Duckling, January 24-26, and January 31-February 2 in E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. Matinee performances at 2 p.m. will be January 26 and February 2. The musical is an award-winning version of Hans Christian Anderson's classic tale of being different, growing up, leaving the nest, and finding home. The SPU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will tour Eastern Washington and surrounding areas during Spring Break, March 15-18, 2008. The choirs are now arranging bookings for their tour. If you have friends or families in the Eastern Washington area, please ask them if they would like to have the choirs perform in their church or school, or if they would be willing to provide a homestay for some of the students. |Nagy Presents in Georgia|
Professor of Education William Nagy recently presented a seminar on vocabulary development for the Georgia state “Reading First" team. The team provides professional development for 125 school districts in the state of Georgia.
|Fitzsimmons Poster Accepted|
The School of Health Sciences is pleased to announce that adjunct faculty member Kathy Fitzsimmons, a doctoral student at University of Northern Colorado (UNC), has had a poster accepted for presentation at the April conference of the Western Institute of Nursing. The institute is an organization dedicated to nursing research. The topic of the poster was the development of cultural competence in nursing students. The co-author is Dr. Faye Hummel, a professor at UNC. Congratulations, Kathy!
|Ellis' Book Wins Award|
Professor of Education Arthur Ellis' book, Research on Educational Innovations (fourth edition), has been awarded first prize by a panel of judges of the Russian Academy of Education as the “Education Research Book of the Year." The book has been published in both English and Russian editions. Congratulation, Art!
|Lustyk's Article Published|
The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce the recent publication of Professor of Psychology Kathy Lustyk's manuscript titled "Abuse History and Premenstrual Symptomatology: Assessing the Mediating Role of Perceived Stress." The article appears in Women & Health, Vol. 46. Lustyk would like to recognize her co-authors, SPU psychology graduates Laura Widman '03 and Linda de Laveaga '06.
|Ferreiro's Article Published|
Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro‘s article "Martin of Braga, De trina mersione, and the See of Rome" in Augustinianum 47 (2007) 193-214, the official publication of the Patristics Institute of the Vatican. The article delves into questions of diverse baptismal liturgies and the role of the See of Rome in Northwestern Iberia, where Martin was bishop. It is also part of an ongoing book project on Iberian bishops and the See of Rome from the fourth through eighth centuries.
|Braden's Russian-American Geography Book Now Online|
Professor of Geography Kathleen Braden would like to offer this tale as a "don't give up!" statement to colleagues trying to get scholarship before the public eye. She was lead author in the 1990s on a geography book comparing Russia and the United States, funded by Macmillan Publishing. The book was completed but never published, because Macmillan was bought by Viacom, who dropped many of the nonfiction projects already in the pipeline. It is now available online for free to whoever would care to download it for purposes of geographic education. The authors are pleased that they are getting about 800 hits per day. Kathleen would like to acknowledge the assistance of Director of Instructional Technology Services David Wicks and senior graphic designer in the Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development Dominic Williamson, and also the good work in book design by SPU student Alyssa Jones. |The “Last Lecture" by Stiling|
SPU's Ivy Honorary presents "The Last Lecture of Dr. Stiling" on Thursday, January 17, at 7 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. The lecture by Associate Professor of History Rod Stiling titled "Keeping On" is based on the question "If you had one last chance to reach the students of SPU, what would you say?" This event is co-sponsored by Ivy Honorary and the Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development. Refreshments will be provided.
