|Tell Your Senior Students About “Senior Survival Saturday"|
Student Programs and the Career Development Center are co-sponsoring “Senior Survival Saturday," an event for graduating seniors. Students will have the opportunity to hear from different speakers about the post-college transition experience. Please encourage your graduating seniors to attend. |Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Award|
Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2008-09 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate this student or students for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of his or her choice. Online nominations are due by April 25, 2008, and can be found on the University Ministries/Center for Worship website.

|“Religions and Feminisms: Countering the Mutual Silence"|
The Women's Studies programs at Seattle Pacific, Seattle University, and the University of Washington will host a conference exploring feminism, religion, and spirituality on Saturday, April 5, 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Professors and students will lead discussions on “Christian Fundamentalism and Feminisms," “Spirituality and Feminist Activism," “Feminism and Islam," and “Feminisms, Religions, and Nation-Building." After the conference, the film, Conviction, will be shown. Sister Jackie, one of the nuns featured in the film who was convicted of breaking into a missile installation and putting crosses in blood on the missiles, will be a special guest. Suggested donation for the entire day is $5 (free for students). For more information and to register, visit the website.
|“Day of Discovery" Re-Broadcasts Documentary on DeShazer|
A three-part documentary, “From Vengeance to Forgiveness: Jake DeShazer's Extraordinary Journey" will be rebroadcast on the cable network ion-TV, March 30, April 6 and 13. The documentary by RBC Ministry is about SPU alumnus and World War II Doolittle Raider Jake DeShazer ཬ, who died on March 15. After the famous Tokyo Raid in April 1942, DeShazer was captured and held as a prisoner of war for 40 months. After the war, he returned to Japan as a missionary. “Day of Discovery" is seen every Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. on ion-TV, and many network affiliate stations. |Weight Watchers Program Begins Apr.1|
A 10-week Weight Watchers session begins on campus April 1 and runs through June 3. It's a terrific program for successful weight loss and good health. Weekly meetings are held Tuesdays at 11:45 a.m. for an hour in Demaray 255." Registration is required. |Staff of the Year Nominations Due Apr. 15|
Do you know a co-worker who “engages" the SPU vision – someone who exemplifies a grace-filled attitude, displays competence on the job, and models Christian character? If so, take a few minutes and submit your nominee for consideration. There are two categories for nominations – one for non-exempt staff (the Oral V. Hemry Award), and one for exempt staff. The staff members ultimately selected will each receive a $1,000 honorarium from the University, and be honored at the President's Spring Forum on May 6 in Brougham Pavilion. The online nomination form only takes a few minutes. The SPU Staff Council will do all the necessary follow up. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, April 15. More
|Undergraduate Academic Counselors Accepting Drop-In Appointments|
The undergraduate academic counselors in Student Academic Services will be available to meet with students during the first five days of Spring Quarter on a first come, first served basis. These brief meetings are intended for students who have Spring 2008 scheduling and registration issues, or who are on academic probation. Faculty or staff who work with students in these situations are welcome to encourage them to drop in for a brief meeting. Drop-ins will take place Wednesday, March 26, through Tuesday April 1. Drop-in hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students may check in at the front desk of the Undergraduate Admissions and Academic Counseling Office in Demaray Hall 120.
|Thalia Symphony Concert on Apr. 4|
Seattle Pacific's orchestra-in-residence, Thalia Symphony, will feature Scandinavian music in a concert Friday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m., at First Free Methodist Church. The concert will feature Finnish composer Jean Sibelius' March from Karelia Suite, and the Northwest premiere of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg's Symphony in C minor. Also performing is special guest pianist George Fiore, former director of the Seattle Symphony Chorale. Fiore will perform Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor. Thalia Symphony is directed by SPU Professor of Music Eric Hanson. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. |Student Employee Celebration Apr. 8|
The annual Student Employee Celebration is Tuesday, April 8, at 3 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. All student employees and their supervisors are encouraged to attend. The event includes a chocolate fondue bar, a panel of alumni and employers, and door prizes from Seattle Aquarium, Barnes and Noble, Cold Stone Creamery, Taproot Theatre, and many others.
|Fremont Bridge Nighttime Closures Mar. 31-Apr. 4|
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will close the Fremont Bridge to vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians, from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning, March 31-Apr. 4. The closures are required to continue work on the replacement of the mechanical and electrical systems. SDOT's contractor will provide a shuttle service for pedestrians and bicyclists from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. between the north and south ends of the bridge (from North 34th Street and Fremont Avenue North to Nickerson Street and Fourth Avenue North) every 20 to 30 minutes.

“Toby is an energetic, 1-year-old labradoodle. The lab part makes him want to fetch all the time, and the poodle part makes him a sneaky problem solver. But he's everybody's best friend (except for maybe ‘Bob' the cat). Toby's fluffy curls are too much of a temptation and everyone just wants to reach out and pet him. He learns commands very quickly, but he is still learning his place in the ‘litter'–below mom, dad, and four human siblings. Associate Registrar Kenda Gatlin and Schedule and Publications Coordinator Tiffany Shelton co-wrote two articles that were published on the Pacific Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (PACRAO) website. Student Academic Services is actively involved in PACRAO. The articles, "Life Interrupted: How to Help Your Staff Maintain Their Sanity at Work," and "Utilizing Your Institution's Sorting Hat," both focus on the topic of professional development. More

Myrna Capp, adjunct faculty in music, adjudicated pre-college piano students for the Bellingham chapter of the Washington Music Teachers Association, March 19-21, in Bellingham, Washington.
|Mezulis Presents Paper|
Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology Amy Mezulis, along with colleagues J.S. Hyde and L.Y. Abramson, recently presented a paper at the Society for Research in Adolescence Conference in Chicago. The title of the paper was "The ABCs of Depression: Integrating Affective, Biological, and Cognitive Models to Explain the Emergence of the Gender Difference in Depression in Adolescence."
|Lustyk Contributes Chapter to Medical Reference Text|
The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce that Professor of Psychology Kathy Lustyk recently contributed a chapter to the medical reference text Handbook of Disease Burdens and Quality of Life Measures. The chapter is titled “Premenstrual Syndrome and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: Issues of Quality of Life, Stress, and Exercise." This text will be published by Springer publishing. Kathy would like to recognize her co-author and current graduate student in the clinical psychology doctoral program, Winslow Gerrish.
|Ferreiro Attends Conference in Rome|
Professor of European History Alberto Ferrerio attended the XIII Symposium of the School of Theology of the Pontificia Universita della Santa Croce in Rome, March 11-14. The symposium's theme was “Church History and Church Historians: Balance and Perspectives." He presented a paper titled "The Sueve-Visigoth Iberian Kingdoms in Gregory of Tours." It will be published in their journal Annales Theologici .The article explores the typological-theological function of the Iberian church and the Sueve-Visigoth kingdoms in the works of Gregory of Tours, the most significant historical chronicler of the sixth century. Highlights of the trip were being a special guest at the Wednesday audience of Pope Benedict XVI, and praying at the tombs of St. Peter and Pope John Paul II. Ferrerio was also interviewed by “Rome Reports" television, a Vatican international news agency. The interview will air on their website and Catholic cable channels worldwide. Last but not least, Ferrerio enjoyed “the glorious Italian people and cuisine."
