|Minister in Residence Week With Anthony Robinson|
Anthony B. Robinson will serve as the minister in residence for 2008, sponsored by the Theology Student Union. In addition to a ministry of preaching, leadership development, and congregational renewal, Robinson has written Common Grace, Transforming Congregational Culture, Leadership for Vital Congregations, and Called to be the Church (with Professor of Christian Scriptures Rob Wall). Robinson will preach in chapel on Tuesday, April 8, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church, and give a reading from some of his books in the Library Reading Room, 12:30-1:15 p.m. On Thursday, April 10, he will lead a forum on unity and diversity for all faculty, staff, and students from 1-2 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room.
|Student Employee Celebration Apr. 8|
The annual Student Employee Celebration is Tuesday, April 8, 3-4:30 p.m., in Upper Gwinn. All student employees and their supervisors are encouraged to attend The event includes a chocolate fondue bar, a panel of alumni and employers, and door prizes from the Seattle Aquarium, Barnes and Noble, Seattle Shakespeare Company, and many others. |Social Venture Planning Competition Apr. 9|
For the second year, the School of Business and Economics is hosting a “Social Venture Plan Competition." Student teams design nonprofit organizations to help solve social problems. The competition takes place Wednesday, April 9, 3-6 p.m., in Weter Hall on the SPU campus. Prizes of $2,500, $1,000, and $500 will be awarded. Visit the website for more information.

In the annual Winifred E. Weter Faculty Award Lecture, Professor of Old Testament Frank Spina uses a story from the book of Judges as a metaphor to explore divisions in the modern Christian church. The Weter lecture is Thursday, April 10, 7:30 p.m., in Demaray Hall 150.
|Town Hall Lectue With Medina|
Director of SPU's Brain Center for Applied Learning Research John Medina talks about his new book, Brain Rules, and his revolutionary ideas on how to boost brain power. |How Do You Know if You Have a Balance Due on Your Faculty/Staff SFS Account?|
Answer: You've received an email titled “Your Seattle Pacific University Online Account Statement Is Available." All faculty and staff have an account with Student Financial Services (SFS), even if you are not a registered student. Posted on the account are charges for Advantage Points, meal blocks, parking citations, library fines, Health Center charges, ID card charges, and tuition charges. Payment via payroll deduction for these charges is not automatic. If you would prefer to receive paper statements in addition to electronic statements, or have questions about your account, contact SFS at 206-281-2061. |College Civics Week Is Apr. 14-18|
Student Programs, and student groups, the Young Democrats and the Political Union, are sponsoring “College Civics Week," April 14-18. Various events are planned throughout the week to engage students politically and civically, including lunch with student senators, the opportunity to hear from different political science professors, a movie night featuring "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," and trivia with Washington state Secretary of State Sam Reed. |Copy Center Open House Apr. 15|
The SPU Copy Center operated by CCS Printing will host an open house in Upper Gwinn Commons on Tuesday, April 15, 1:30-3:30 p.m. The Copy Center will roll out a new and revised online ordering form. Copy Center staff will be available to answer any questions about the new form, or any questions about the copying process. |Tell Your Senior Students About “Senior Survival Saturday"|
Student Programs and the Career Development Center are co-sponsoring “Senior Survival Saturday," an event for graduating seniors on Saturday, April 12, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to hear from different speakers about the post-college transition experience. |Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Award|
Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2008-09 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate this student or students for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of choice. Online nominations are due by April 25 and can be found on the University Ministries/Center for Worship website.
|“Day of Discovery" Re-Broadcasts Documentary on DeShazer|
A three-part documentary, “From Vengeance to Forgiveness: Jake DeShazer's Extraordinary Journey" will be rebroadcast on the cable network ion-TV, March 30, April 6 and 13. The documentary by RBC Ministry is about SPU alumnus and World War II Doolittle Raider Jake DeShazer ཬ, who died on March 15. After the famous Tokyo Raid in April 1942, DeShazer was captured and held as a prisoner of war for 40 months. After the war, he returned to Japan as a missionary. “Day of Discovery" is seen every Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. on ion-TV, and many network affiliate stations. |Staff of the Year Nominations Due Apr. 15|
Do you know a co-worker who “engages" the SPU vision – someone who exemplifies a grace-filled attitude, displays competence on the job, and models Christian character? If so, take a few minutes and submit your nominee for consideration. There are two categories for nominations – one for non-exempt staff (the Oral V. Hemry Award), and one for exempt staff. The staff members ultimately selected will each receive a $1,000 honorarium from the University, and be honored at the President's Spring Forum on May 6 in Brougham Pavilion. The online nomination form only takes a few minutes. The SPU Staff Council will do all the necessary follow up. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, April 15. More
|Fremont Bridge Nighttime Closures Apr. 7-10, Paving Work to Begin|
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will close the Fremont Bridge to vehicles from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning, April 7-10. The closures are required to continue work on the replacement of the mechanical and electrical systems. The bridge may close periodically to pedestrians and bicyclists during this time. SDOT's contractor will provide a shuttle service for pedestrians and bicyclists when needed between the north and south ends of the bridge (from North 34th Street and Fremont Avenue North to Nickerson Street and Fourth Avenue North). Also, SDOT paving crews plan to work on a separate project at the north end of the bridge. Paving crews will close Fremont Way North to vehicles from the north end of the bridge to Fremont Place North (just south of N 35th Street) during the same time as the bridge closures.

|Yanik's Recent Theatre Set Designs|
Don Yanik, professor of theatre, has recently completed three professional theatre set designs. In February, Don was in Little Rock, Arkansas, completing his design for the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Doubt" by John Patrick Shanley. Cliff Fannin Baker, founder and former artistic director of the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, directed the production and requested Don design the scenery. Don had previously designed several shows with Baker. Don's former student Mike Nichols, from the University of Arkansas, was the technical director. Don's most current design is for the Seattle Children's Theatre (SCT) production of “According to Coyote," by the late actor and director John Kauffman. (See photo to the right.) Don developed the original set design for Kauffman when the play was presented at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1986. The SCT production staff invited Don to revisit the production this year with a new design. The play opened March 14 and runs through May 4. The design is scheduled to be sent to Brisbane, Australia, for production at the Children's Theatre in late summer and early fall. The third production designed by Don is a play written by SPU alumnus James Miller ‘90 for the Ensemble Theatre Company in Santa Barbara, California. The play, “The Paper Dragon," is based on the children's book of the same name by Marguerite W. Davol. The play premiered in Santa Barbara on April 7. Miller will direct the production.
|Spina Lectures at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary|
Professor of Old Testament Frank Spina gave a lecture on March 26 at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evansville, Illinois. The conference topic addressed evangelicals and progressives in a post-Christian culture. Spina's lecture was titled "Going Forward by Going Backward: The Bible as Christian Scripture."
|Thorpe Presents Paper|
Professor of English Doug Thorpe presented a paper at the recent “Convivencia" conference at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. The conference was supported in part by the Lilly Foundation. He joined a group of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim scholars from a variety of academic disciplines exploring the significance (politically, spiritually, aesthetically) of the “Golden Age" of Spain when these three Abrahamic faiths were in rich conversation with each other.
|Ward Presents at National Conference|
Janet Ward, associate vice president for information and data management, presented a session at the national conference for the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, held in Orlando, Florida, March 24-27. Ward's topic was “Enrollment Forecasting Using Historical Trends."
|Davis Presents Paper|
Professor of Political Science Reed Davis presented his paper, "Theologians Never Know Rest: Charles de Gaulle, Raymond Aron, and the Politics of Grandeur," at the annual meeting of the International Studies Association in San Francisco on March 29.
|Monroe Presents at Society of Pediatric Nurses|
Heidi Monroe, instructor of nursing, presented at the Society of Pediatric Nurses annual convention in Denver, Colorado, on April 5. Her session was titled “Educating Ourselves: Filling the Half-Empty Cup of Gender Disparity in Pediatric Nursing." Heidi presented her findings from her original research for her master's thesis on why so few men enter the arena of pediatric nursing, and how these trends may be changed.
|Hanson Presents Lecture at the Seattle Symphony|
Professor of Music Eric Hanson presented the preconcert lectures for the Seattle Symphony in Benaroya Hall, March 27-30. His presentation, "Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto and Popular Song," demonstrated how the composer took popular material, particularly blind beggar songs, from his own century to develop the material in his concerto. His concerto became co-opted by popular culture in the 20th century. In February, Eric presented "Tosca and Verismo" to the Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.
|Castelo, Christian, Strong, Wall Present at Wesleyan Theological Society|
Last month, several School of Theology (SOT) faculty members gave presentations at the third joint meeting for the Society for Pentecostal Studies and Wesleyan Theological Society held in Durham, North Carolina.
SOT Dean Doug Strong was a panelist for the session “Wesleyan, Holiness, and Pentecostal Visions of the New Humanity."
Professor of Christian Scriptures Rob Wall was respondent to “Dancing with the Devil: The Interplay of the Spirit and the Demonic in the Narrative of Acts." Rob was elected second vice president of the Wesleyan Theological Society, which means he will be the program chair for the 2010 meeting, and then president of the society for the 2011 meeting.
Assistant Professor of Theology Daniel Castelo was a panelist for a roundtable discussion, “Speaking in Tongues: Multidisciplinary Perspectives.
Adjunct School of Theology faculty member Charles Christian presented “Practical Application of a Holistic Anthropology, or, What Pastors Can Say at Hospitals and Funerals."
|Witiw's Article Published|
Associate Professor of Physics Michael Witiw had an article published in the Elsevier/Atmospheric Research Journal (Volume 87 (2008), pp. 293-300). The title of the article is "Trends in Fog Frequencies in the Los Angeles Basin." In January, he presented his research at the American Meteorological Society 2008 Meeting in New Orleans.
