|Do You Commute From South of I-405?|
Commuters who regularly drive to Seattle along the I-5 corridor from south of I-405 are invited to participate in a research study by the Federal Highway Administration (FHA). To be eligible, participants must make the majority of their commute trips by personal vehicle, carpool, *or* vanpool and not by bus *or* rail. The study includes two parts.
1) a two-hour focus group on Saturday, June 21
2) a two-week trip log
Participants will receive $150 for completing the study. If you are interested in participating, please call 1-888-334-4898 *or* email SeattleCommute@westat.com. Please include your name, phone number, and the best times to reach you. This study is being conducted by Westat, a professional research firm, on behalf of the FHA.
|Spring Quarter Grades Due June 16|
Spring grades are due in Student Academic Services (SAS) by 4:30 p.m. on Monday,
June 16. Grades may be submitted to SAS via the web, in person, placed in the SAS
drop box (located outside Demaray Hall 151), mailed, **or** faxed to 206-281-2669. Timely submission of grades helps students and offices with important processes such as the academic dismissal process, disbursing financial aid, and processing enrollment verification. If instructors want grades to appear on the web before June 16, they need to contact Coordinator of Student Records Kelli Knapp at firstname.lastname@example.org so that she can roll the grades to academic history. If there are challenges when grading students, please contact SAS prior to the grading deadline. We may be able to assist with resolving the situation. |Participate in Exploration of Missionary Kid Repatriation|
This summer, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology Lynette Bikos is leading a team of researchers exploring the repatriation experiences of college-age, repatriated, missionary kids (MKs). The research team will interview 12-18 MKs and those who support them (e.g., parents/guardians, missionary-sending organizations, Mu Kappa sponsors). To be eligible for the study, MKs should currently be between the ages of 18 and 27. MKs should have spent at least three *or* more years at an international missionary assignment, and have returned to the United States not more than two years prior to the age of 18 (*or* two years prior to attending college). This research project has been approved by SPU''s institutional review board (IRB # 070802055) through May 29, 2009. If you, and/*or* others you know, would like to be part of this project, contact Lynette immediately at lhbi firstname.lastname@example.org. You need not be in the Seattle area to participate. While there will be individual interviews and focus groups held on the SPU campus, the researchers will also conduct interviews on the phone and via the Internet.
|Fiscal Year-end Reminder: Stationery Orders|
If your department needs to order SPU stationery in the fiscal year 2007-08, the
order must be placed by 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17 (new date). This will
ensure delivery and invoicing by June 27. Memo pads are processed on the last
Tuesday of each month, so memo pad orders placed in June will not be delivered

|Farewell Reception for Bob Grams June 5|
Bob Grams, SPU's head athletic trainer, will be honored at a farewell reception on Thursday, June 5, at 2 p.m. in the Falcon Club Lounge. All faculty and staff are invited. For 32 years, Bob served with tremendous skill tending to the physical well-being and occasional “repair" of injured athletes. He has flown on hundreds of road trips, used many miles of wrapping tape, and visited most of the states in the union in his role. Please help the Athletics Department thank this wonderful Christian colleague for his dedicated and exemplary service to our community.

Recently, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology John Thoburn, along with
doctoral students Zeba Ahmad, Jake Bentley, Kristen Perry, and Meghan McBreary,
chaired the symposium "Psychological Effects of Man-Made Disasters of Children
Worldwide" at the annual meeting of the Western Psychological Association in
Irvine, California. Papers presented during the symposium included "The Impact of T
rauma and Displacement on the Psychological Wellbeing of Refugee and
Asylum-Seeking Children Worldwide", "The Psychological Effects of Genocide on Children Globally", "The Psychological Effects of War and Political Violence on Children Globally", and "The Psychological Effects of Terrorism on Children Worldwide."

Karen Quek, assistant professor of marriage and family therapy, is the first author of a published article titled "Reshaping Marital Power: How Dual-Career Newlywed Couples Create Equality in Singapore" in the Journal of Social and Interpersonal Relations, Vol. 25, Issue 3, pp. 513-534.
|Finch, Gatlin, Ward Attend Research Conference|
The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) forum was held in Seattle, May 25-28, and was attended by Jerry Finch, director of institutional research, Tim Gatlin, senior systems and data manager, and Janet Ward, associate vice president for information and data management. In addition, Jerry served as the local-arrangements chair for the largest AIR conference in history (more than 1,700 attendees from across the United States and more than 100 countries).
|Capp Book Signing at Elliott Bay Book Company|
Adjunct music faculty member Myrna Capp and her daughter, Kristin, will be at Elliott Bay Book Company for a book signing and author presentation on Sunday, June 8, 2-3:30 p.m. Myrna and Kristin (photographer) are the co-authors of Keeping the Embers Alive: Musicians of Zimbabwe. Myrna will read interviews with Zimbabwean musicians and will present images from the new publication. The book was published by Africa World Press and The Red Sea Press. |Ferreiro's Article Published|
Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro's article titled "De prohibitione carnis: Meat Abstention and the Priscillianists" was published in Zeitschrift fur Antikes Christentum 11, 3 (2007) 448-462. Priscillian and his followers were accused of holding Manichaean views that informed their meat abstention. This article for the first time explores the topic in depth. It concludes that the charge was nothing more than a rumor, and that Priscillianists held to a monastic-orthodox view of meat abstention.
|Woodward Presents “History of Baseball"|
At the regular spring meeting of the Northwest chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) on May 17 in Seattle, Professor of History Bill Woodward presented a chart summarizing the course organization he uses in his University Seminar on “The History of Baseball." He solicited expert comment on his content for the most recent decades, generating an interesting and helpful discussion. Assistant Professor of Theology Doug Koskela also attended.

Longtime Falcon Track and Field Coach Doris Heritage, who is retiring after 30 years, was featured in the sports section in the Tacoma News Tribune on June 2.
|Feldman, Students Featured in The Enterprise|
Professor of Art Roger Feldman and students in his Art 2722 class were featured in a front page story in the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Enterprise. The students were asked to design and install complimentary sculptures in three adjoining properties in the Innis Arden neighborhood in Shoreline.
