Day of Common Learning Oct. 15

Faculty, staff, and students will participate in SPU's seventh annual Day of Common Learning on Wednesday, October 15. (SPU offices will be closed from 9:45 a.m. until 11 a.m.) This year's theme is “Beauty." Dr. Nicholas Wolterstorff, emeritus professor of philosophical theology at Yale Divinity School, will give the morning's keynote address in Brougham Pavilion titled “Beauty, Love, Justice, and Worship." The afternoon sessions include “Beauty and the Bible," “Dr. Seuss and the Poetics of Beauty: Why the Grinch, Sneetches, and Lorax Matter Today," “The Beauty of Diversity: Fostering a Positive Learning Environment," “Enduring Beauty Amidst Fractured Landscapes: The Columbia River Wanapum Indian Experience," and many others. “Thursday Food for Thought:" Bill Woodward and Baseball

On Thursday, October 16, SPU Professor of History Bill Woodward presents “Runs, Hits, and ‘Eras,'" a synopsis of the story of Major League baseball. Drawing on his University Seminar on “The History of Baseball," the presentation covers seven eras in baseball's history, each illustrating trends in the larger American culture. It's an epic of biblical proportions, Woodward likes to say. Come learn why at “Thursday Food for Thought," a brown-bag lunch event held in the Library Reading Room, 12:30–1:15 p.m. A question-and-answer time will follow. Faculty Recital Oct. 17

A unique concert featuring three members of the SPU music faculty will be presented by the Music Department on Friday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the E.E. Bach Theatre. Professor of Music Wayne Johnson will present a multi-media lecture and recital titled “Keyboard Wizards of the Gershwin Era," featuring piano music by George Gershwin, Pauline Alpert, Billy Mayerl and others from the 1920s and ‘30s. Assistant Professor of Music Brian Chin will perform a world premiere of a new trumpet sonata by Daniel Bukvich, and adjunct music faculty member Julian Catford will present a program for solo classical guitar titled “Music From Spain, South America, and More." The event is free and wheelchair accessible.

The Sacred Sounds of Christmas: Nov. 30

Begin the Advent season with SPU's ninth annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas concert Sunday, November 30, in Benaroya Hall. Featuring SPU's nationally acclaimed Concert Choir, Wind Symphony, and other groups, this stirring performance of music and narrative tells the story of God's promise of a Savior, and the fulfillment of that promise in the birth of Jesus. This year, by popular demand, a second performance has been added. Reserved seating is $17 and $20; tickets are available through Ticketmaster at 206-292-ARTS or, or in person (cash and checks only) at the Benaroya Hall Box Office. Work to Begin on Burke-Gilman Trail at Stone Way North

Beginning Monday, October 13, northbound traffic on Stone Way North will be temporarily restricted to one lane. This will allow crews to widen the ramps where the Burke-Gilman Trail intersects with the street. Southbound traffic on Stone Way North will not be affected. Bicyclists on the Burke-Gilman Trail will need to dismount and walk their bikes on a temporary path at Stone Way North and North 34th Street. Crews will work on the trail for the next five to 10 days. Some of the utilities at the intersection will be relocated to allow for the widening of the ramps. This will provide more crossing room for trail users and bring the ramps up to Americans with Disabilities Act standards. This part of the Burke-Gilman Trail will become part of the new Cheslahud Lake Union Loop that will encircle Lake Union.

Welcome Prospective Students and Families on SPU Visit Days

October 17 and November 7 are “SPU Fridays," which are one-day visits for prospective students and their families. The day includes a campus tour, classroom visits, student/faculty panel, financial aid and admissions information, and lunch in Gwinn Commons. Be sure to look for these students on Fridays and say “hi."

Faculty, Staff Invited to Donate to Date Auction

Date Auction is an event put together by the Student Union Board (STUB) every year to raise money for a local charity as well as SPU's SPRINT program. Contrary to popular belief, the Date Auction does not auction people as dates, but auctions entertaining packages for students to experience together with friends. STUB also holds a silent auction in which students bid on items of interest. This year's Date Auction is Friday, November 7, and will also include a dessert auction. This year's charity is Urban Impact, a non-profit organization based in Seattle's Rainier Valley. Urban Impact offers after-school tutoring programs for struggling students, an affordable health and fitness club, and several other ministries serving the local community. STUB would like to invite faculty and staff to be a part of donating toward the Date Auction. Perhaps you have a passion for boating or enjoy cooking and baking for others? Maybe you are a movie buff or have extra tickets to the Seahawks, Mariners, or Seattle Sounders? We would love the SPU faculty and staff to help STUB out by getting involved and being creative by thinking outside of the box! Associate Vice President of Student Life Jeff Jordan is a prime example of an appreciated donor. Last year, he rented a big screen television and hosted a Super Bowl Party for 20 students. Donations need to include the name of the activity, time, date, place, and number of students (at least two or more). STUB would also welcome any donations for the Silent Auction, such as gift cards, theme baskets, movie passes, or donations for the Dessert Auction. Medina Lectures on “Parenting With the Brain in Mind"

SPU Director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research John Medina will give two lectures about early childhood development and learning as part of University Presbyterian Church's "Parents Learning Together" series. The lectures are October 15 and October 22 at University Presbyterian Church, located at 4540 15th Avenue NE, 7-8:30 p.m. His lectures will focus on what parents should know about their children's development and learning. Medina is a developmental molecular biologist and the author of Brain Rules.

Stationery Orders Between October 9-17

If you plan to order stationery during early October, note that owners of Vision Press, the printing company responsible for SPU stationery products, will be on vacation from Thursday, October 9, to Friday, October 17. If you placed an order that was processed on Tuesday, September 30, and gave quick approval to the proofs faxed to you on Tuesday, September 30, you will receive your order Wednesday, October 8. Orders that were processed on Tuesday, October 7, and approved by noon on Wednesday, October 8, will be delivered Monday, October 20. Orders placed by Tuesday, October 14, will be processed and delivered with the orders processed Tuesday, October 21.

Overstreet Interviewed for Breakpoint's “Discourse" Podcast

University Communications specialist and Response Contributing Editor Jeffrey Overstreet was interviewed about his new novel, Cyndere's Midnight on "BreakPoint," a ministry of Prison Fellowship. Jackson Receives Award

Assistant Professor of Journalism Rick Jackson received an honorable mention in the competition for “Outstanding Faculty Paper" during the annual conference of the American Journalism Historians Association, October 1-4, in Seattle. Jackson's paper was titled “Readability and the Shaping of Journalistic Writing."

Roe Presents Research Paper

The Department of Psychology is pleased to note that Mícheál Roe, professor of psychology and dean of the School of Psychology, Family, and Community, presented a research paper at an international symposium in Northern Ireland this past summer. His two co-authors were psychology alumni Jordan Gutierrez '08 and Torin Schaafsma '08. The research investigated the maintenance and reproduction across generations of ethnic identity among the Scotch-Irish in America — “cousins" of the Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland who are experiencing a cultural revival since the cessation of most political violence in the province. Ethnic identities in conjunction with ethnic memories and selective ethnic histories are key to understanding the apparent intractable nature of ethnic violence worldwide.

Pope-Levison Gives Lecture for Symposium

Priscilla Pope-Levison, professor of theology, was the featured speaker for the recent 13th annual McCown Symposium at Roberts Wesleyan University and Northeastern Seminary in Rochester, New York. She gave two lectures on American women evangelists, preached in chapel, and spoke at a lunchtime gathering. In addition, she contributed 16 entries to The Westminster Handbook to Women in American Religious History (Westminster John Knox Press, 2008).
