|Faculty, Staff Invited to “The Election Bash" With Students|
The Office of Student Programs, the Political Union, and the Young Democrats are hosting “Count the Vote: The Election Bash" on Tuesday, November 4, beginning at 6 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to watch the election results. There will be games, food, trivia, and prizes.

On November 6, SPU Professor of English Susan VanZanten presents “How to Read Emily Dickinson," in which she gives pointers on “unpacking" Emily Dickinson's poems with an eye toward personal reflection and spiritual application. |Remembering, Waiting, and Hoping: The Countercultural Pursuits of Christmas – An Evening With Kathleen Norris|
In anticipation of the Advent and Christmas season, Image journal invites you and a guest to an evening featuring award-winning poet, writer, and speaker Kathleen Norris on Saturday, November 8, at 7:15 p.m. at the Seattle Art Museum at 1300 First Avenue in downtown Seattle. Author of the New York Times best-seller The Cloister Walk, Dakota, and Amazing Grace, Norris will give a thought-provoking talk titled "Remembering, Waiting and Hoping: The Countercultural Pursuits of Christmas." This gathering is a celebration marking the launch of an inspiring new book God With Us: Rediscovering the Meaning of Christmas. This volume is a tapestry of Scripture selections, master works of art, and prayer and reflections from writers such as Eugene Petersen, Richard John Neuhaus, Luci Shaw, and Kathleen Norris. The book is edited by Greg Pennoyer and SPU English faculty member Gregory Wolfe. The collection invites you to slow down and reconnect with the often overlooked meaning of Christmas. RSVP online.
|Dr. Michael Ward Offers Insights into The Chronicles of Narnia|
On Thursday, November 13, at 7 p.m. in Upper Gwinn, The Rev. Dr. Michael Ward, internationally renowned C.S. Lewis scholar, will present a free public lecture on his critically acclaimed book, Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis, which presents a scholarly and cogent argument that Lewis secretly based the Chronicles of Narnia on the seven heavens of the medieval cosmos. Sponsored by the SPU C.S. Lewis Institute, the SPU Fellows, and the Kindlings Muse.
|Emeriti Retirement Health Solutions Seminars Nov. 13|
Did you know Medicare does not cover all your health care needs in retirement? Sad, but true! Did you know that SPU is setting aside funds toward this end? It's true! If you are benefit eligible, at least 35 years old, and with one or more years of service, SPU is contributing up to $852 per year ($71 per month) for your retirement health care needs. Did you know that you won't be taxed on those Emeriti funds when you draw them out in retirement, and that you may choose to voluntarily make contributions now on an after-tax basis (if you're at least 21 years old)? True again! For those planning their retirement needs, Emeriti Retirement Health Solutions (ERHS) is hosting a seminar Thursday, November 13, at 12 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. The 90-minute session will address reasons to save for retiree health care, unique tax advantages of the Emeriti program, options available under the program, and how to make additional contributions. For those approaching retirement in the next three to 10 years, ERHS will host a 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. 90-minute session addressing Emeriti insurance options, Medicare, and the Medicare Part D benefit. Although the sessions have been targeted to meet the needs of different audiences, you are invited to attend any session. |Winter Registration Begins Nov. 17|
Registration for Winter Quarter is coming soon. All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not admitted to a major will want to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their appointment time. Winter registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Monday, November 17. Winter registration for graduate students begins Monday, November 24. |SPU Theatre Presents “The Alto Part"|
SPU's Theatre Department presents “The Alto Part" November 13-15 and 20-22. The production revolves around a mother and daughter who fight for a singing career while dealing with a cantankerous landlady and a tough-talking aunt. The play begins at 7:30 p.m. at the E.E. Bach Theatre, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, November 22. Tickets are $12 for general admission, and $10 for students and seniors. Children under age 5 are not admitted. |Bonhoeffer's “Cost of Discipleship" Reading Starts Nov. 3|
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to join a reading of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's book Cost of Discipleship beginning Monday, November 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the end room on the second floor of the library. We'll meet each Monday and go through the book together. No preparation is necessary. Feel free to come and talk about what it means to embrace the costly grace of being a disciple of Jesus in a "world come of age."

November 7 is “SPU Friday," a one-day visit for prospective students and their families. The day includes a campus tour, classroom visits, student/faculty panel, financial aid and admissions information, and lunch in Gwinn Commons. Be sure to look for these students on Friday and say “hi."
|Staff Payroll Change?|
The 15th of each month is the last day to make adjustments or additions to your staff payroll check. If you have any changes, call Carol Clement, payroll lead in the Finance Office, at 206-281-2533.
|Library's Summit Borrowing Software Upgrade|
The Summit borrowing software used by the SPU Library is changing on December 1.
For an unknown period of time after December 1, you will not be able to renew
books reserved through the Summit borrowing software. There are two ways to keep a
Summit book beyond its due date: (1) Request another copy of the same title before
your copy is due, or (2) Return your copy, and request it again. To reduce the
need to renew books, the Orbis Cascade Alliance library directors voted
unanimously to extend the loan period from three to four weeks for Summit books.
The bottom line is when you check out books via the Summit software after
December 1, you will get those books for four weeks, but you can't renew the Summit books. The SPU Library staff is available to answer any questions you may have about the new Navigator software for the Summit borrowing system. Or, you can check the library website at http://spu.edu/library, call the Library Circulation Desk at 206-281-2228, or visit the FAQ website.
|Faculty, Staff Invited to Join Amnesty International's Letter-Writing Campaign|
Nobel Prize-winning, grassroots activist organization Amnesty International (AI) has more than 2.2 million members, supporters and subscribers in more than 150 countries and territories in every region of the world. AI undertakes research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights (visit www.amnestyusa.org/index.html). SPU's chapter of AI has been active now for 19 years sponsoring letter writing campaigns and campus events related to human rights activism.
This year AI is hosting a letter-writing table immediately before group on November 5 and 19 and December 3. In addition, AI hopes to host at least one faith/learning forum each quarter related to the Christian's call to human rights activism. For faculty and staff who desire to participate in the letter-writing campaign, model letters will be distributed electronically via email. |New Scholarship Endowment: Dorothy Janett Wilson Zwaduk|
SPU is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dorothy Janett Wilson Zwaduk Scholarship Endowment. This endowment is in honor of alumna Dr. Joy D. Staley's mother, Dorothy Janett Wilson Zwaduk. Dorothy Zwaduk's
22-year career in elementary education was made possible by a generous uncle, who gave her money after the banks closed during the Depression and she lost her hard-earned college savings. Joy Staley graduated from Seattle Pacific in 1966 with a bachelor's of science degree in zoology and chemistry, received a master's in education and counseling in 1970, and in 2006 received a doctorate in clinical psychology. She has been a long-time supporter of Seattle Pacific and desires to establish this fund, along with her husband, Edward Staley, to provide scholarships in perpetuity to deserving women studying elementary education.

|Long-Term Care Insurance Enrollment and Guaranteed Issue Information Meeting Nov. 4|
Studies show that 40 percent of those receiving long-term care are working-age adults. Interested in learning more about how to protect yourself? Consider locking in a long-term care insurance policy and rate. Eligible employees are those who work a minimum of 20 hours per week. In addition, if you were hired between 11/1/2007 and 10/31/2008, a guaranteed issue long-term care policy may be granted without completion of a medical questionnaire. A spouse, adult children, siblings, parents, and grandparents (including in-laws) of eligible employees may also apply for insurance with completion of a medical questionnaire. If you would like to learn more about this voluntary benefit, come to an informational meeting on Tuesday, November 4, at 1 p.m. or 5:15 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. |The Sacred Sounds of Christmas: November 30, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.|
Begin the Advent season with SPU's ninth annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas concert Sunday, November 30, in Benaroya Hall. Featuring SPU's nationally acclaimed Concert Choir, Wind Symphony, and other groups, this stirring performance of music and narrative tells the story of God's promise of a Savior, and the fulfillment of that promise in the birth of Jesus. This year, by popular demand, a second performance was added, however, the 4 p.m. concert is now sold out. |CPY Faculty, Students Participate at APA Meeting|
At the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association (APA) in Boston,
clinical psychology (CPY) faculty and students made a number of poster and
symposium presentations. Associate Professor John Thoburn along with CPY alumni
Garrett Gilchrist ‘08 presented "Drive for Muscularity and Reasons for Exercise
Among Bodybuilders" in a symposium presentation. John also participated, along
with Drs. Florence Kaslow and Margy Heldring, in the Division 43 forum on the
development of an international network of disaster family psychotherapists.
Professor Beverly Wilson, along with students Alesha Muljat, Tanner Oliver,
Sonja Kottke, Holly Petaja, Rachael Montague, Laurel Stinar, Lindsey Kremmel,
Larissa Mancil, Adrienne Stevens, and Kathleen King, presented two posters: "Family
Expressiveness and Child Emotionality: Mediating Role of Inconsistent
Parenting," and "Parental Rejection, Intrusiveness, and Coercion Effects on
Children's Defiant Behavior." Additionally, their submission "Sustained Attention
and Aggression in Developmentally Delayed and Non-Delayed Boys" was elected as a
finalist, and was invited for presentation to a symposium. Associate Professor
Lynette Bikos and students Julia Kocheleva and Renee Gibbs presented the
poster “Toward a Career Adaptability Model of Understanding the Expatriate
Transition." Additionally, Lynette and Turkish colleagues presented the
symposium, "Exploring Adaptation and Acculturation Between Turkey and the U.S."
and presented the poster, "An Applied, Analytic, Dialogic, Autoethnography About
Counseling Psychology Collaborations Between Turkey and the U.S." Assistant
Professor Amy Mezulis, doctoral student Anna Charbonneau, and University of Wisconsin colleague Dr. Janet Hyde presented the poster, "Temperament, Stress Exposure, and Stress Reactivity as Mediators of the Gender Difference in Depression in Adolescence." Additionally, students Jake Bentley and Zeba Ahmad delivered the poster, "Mental Health Perspectives Among Cambodian and Somali Refugee Populations."

|Edwards Quoted in Puget Sound Business Journal|
Scott Edwards, associate professor of marriage and family therapy, was quoted in the Puget Sound Business Journal on October 24 in an article titled “State toughens standards for mental health counselors." He provided information on changes in abolishing the registered counselor credential, and the resulting impact and quality of mental health services for the public.
