Dr. Benjamin Carson on Campus April 6

Benjamin S. Carson, M.D, director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, will speak on campus Tuesday, April 6, 1–2 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Dr. Carson is the keynote speaker for SPU's Downtown Business Breakfast earlier in the day. Carson is a highly regarded motivational speaker and has addressed audiences from grade school classrooms to the National Prayer Breakfast. The 2009 movie Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., is based on his life. He is also the recipient of the highest civilian honor in the nation — the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Don't miss hearing this gifted speaker, who prays before every surgery he performs, and who, when President Clinton asked for his notes before his 1997 Prayer Breakfast speech, told him, “I don't write speeches and I don't have notes. Important Registration Deadlines for Spring Quarter

Increasing class enrollment ends Wednesday, April 7. If you would like to accommodate more students into your course, and the room capacity of the classroom would not be exceeded, contact schedule/publications coordinators Tiffany Shelton at or Lee Staman at in SAS by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, to have your class enrollment increased.
Last day to add/drop classes is Wednesday, April 7. Students are able to register, and add and drop courses, until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7. After this time, Web registration is no longer available for Spring Quarter. This is the last day to register for classes, including those that meet once a week.
The deadline for students wishing to take a course pass/no credit is Wednesday, April 14. Students wishing to take a course pass/no credit or register for an internship, independent study, dissertation, or individual instruction in music may do so in SAS in Demaray Hall 151 until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14.

Undergraduate Academic Counselors Accepting Drop-In Appointments

The undergraduate academic counselors in Student Academic Services will be available to meet with students on a first- come, first-served basis during the first week of Spring Quarter. These brief meetings are intended for students who have Spring 2010 scheduling and registration issues, or who are on academic probation. Students should have already met with their faculty advisor, as these meetings do not result in the removal of the faculty advisor hold. Students may check in with an academic counselor, located at the check-in table in the lobby directly outside of Demaray Hall 150. Drop-in hours are as follows:
• Tuesday, April 6: 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
• Wednesday April 7: 8:30 a.m.–9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m.–5 p.m.

Annual Paul T. Walls Lecture

Professor of Christian Scriptures Robert Wall continues his examination of Christian theologian John Wesley in the annual Paul T. Walls lecture on Thursday, April 8, at 9:30 a.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. The title of the lecture is “John's John: The Tenor of Scripture in a Wesleyan Key, Part Three."

Nursing Students' Presentation on Vietnam

Nursing students will share their stories of working in Vietnam on Thursday, April 8, 11 a.m.–12 p.m., in Demaray Hall 358. Each year, 10 senior nursing students travel across the globe to impact the health and lives of people in Vietnam. Students spend five weeks of class on campus, and five weeks of clinical work in Vietnam.

Thalia Symphony Celebrates Chopin

SPU's orchestra-in-residence, Thalia Symphony, will perform on Friday, April 9, 7:30 p.m., in First Free Methodist Church. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin's birth, the repertoire includes Berlioz' Overture to “Judges of the Secret Court;" Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1; and Nielsen's Symphony No. 2, “The Four Temperaments." The concert will feature local guest pianist George Fiore, formerly of the Seattle Symphony and the Seattle Opera. The symphony is conducted by SPU Professor of Music Eric Hanson. Benefit-eligible employees and spouses may complete the WebMD HealthQuotient Personal Health Assessment now until April 30. Employees will receive a $75 completion award. You can access the HealthQuotient through the WebMD link on the Human Resources website. Bruce R. Kennedy Endowment for Ethical Business Leadership

SPU is pleased to announce the establishment of the Bruce R. Kennedy Endowment for Ethical Business Leadership. SPU's Senior Gift Officer Kristi Nelson worked with Karleen Kennedy to establish this endowment to honor the legacy of Karleen's late husband, Bruce R. Kennedy. In personal and public life, Bruce was committed to upholding the truth of the gospel and living by it. He was held in high regard for his commitment to integrity and ethical business leadership, both by those under his leadership and those who observed it. Bruce was awarded honorary doctorates by both Seattle Pacific University and his alma mater, the University of Alaska. This endowment will provide funding to the Center for Integrity in Business for the purpose of hosting visiting scholars at the University. The scholars will spend time on campus interacting with students, faculty, and the surrounding business community, thus enriching the scholarly conversation and building a robust body of knowledge articulating a faith-based understanding of the purpose and practice of business.

SPU Hosts National Association for Christians in Special Education Conference

Rick Eigenbrood, dean of the School of Education, and Debby Hudson, assistant professor and chair of special education, invite faculty and staff to attend the National Association for Christians in Special Education (NACSPED) "It's All About Community" Conference Saturday, April 10, on the SPU campus. The keynote speaker is Rick Steele, SPU professor of moral and historical theology, addressing "Christian Virtue and Ministry to Persons With Disability." The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. A continental breakfast, snacks, and lunch will be provided. The cost is $50 per person. Camp Casey Faculty/Staff House Summer Reservations

Our current Camp Casey Faculty/Staff House reservations policy is still under review by the President's Cabinet. However, in the interest of moving the reservation process along for the next reservation period (June 14-September 26), please submit your request via email. Make sure to include the following information: name, email address, two contact phone numbers, mailing address, SPU ID number, and your first, second, and third choice for dates. The maximum stay is seven days. Arrivals and departures are on Mondays if you are staying for the maximum time. The check out time is 9 a.m. for Monday departures. This is a firm time, so keep this in mind as you put forth your requests. Please submit requests by email to for the requesting period June 14-September 26. Take advantage of your benefits of being a full-time, regular employee at SPU. Scheduling for summer is done on a point system based on years of SPU service and previous stays at Casey. Please send your request by April 16. You will hear by April 23 if you have been awarded a stay or not. Annual Bingo Night April 6

The annual Bingo Night is Tuesday, April 6, 7–9 p.m. in Falcon's Club Lounge. This fundraiser is hosted by the Senior Gift Committee as a class project to raise money for study abroad scholarships. Faculty and staff are invited to play, and the committee is also looking for faculty and staff to volunteer as bingo callers. Staff Member of the Year Nominations Open Until April 14

Do you know a co-worker who “engages" the SPU vision, someone who exemplifies a “grace-filled" attitude, displays competence on the job, and models Christian character? If so, please take a few minutes and submit your nominee for Staff Member of the Year. There are two categories for nominations – non-exempt staff (the Oral V. Hemry Award), and exempt staff. The staff members ultimately selected will each receive a $1,000 honorarium from the University, and be honored at the President's Spring Forum on May 11 in Brougham Pavilion. Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Scholarship

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2010–11 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate him or her for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship receive a $750 cash grant, and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of their choice. Erickson Coauthors Book Chapter

Assistant Professor of Psychology Thane Erickson coauthored a chapter on generalized anxiety disorder in a book titled Interpersonal Processes in the Anxiety Disorders," recently published by the American Psychological Association.

School of Education Professors Present at Conference

School of Education professors Greg Fritzberg, June Hyun, Chris Sink, Debby Espinor, and Rick Eigenbrood all presented papers at the sixth international conference on the “Social and Moral Fabric of the School" at York St. John University, in York, England, March 25-27. Greg spoke about “Instincts and Ideals," June talked about “Meaningful School-Based Counseling: The Use of Play Therapy," Chris spoke on “What Is Meaningful: Organizing Principles of Late Adolescents," Debby's presentation was titled “Training Young White Middle Class Teachers for Diverse Classrooms," and Rick's topic was “Examining the Social Construct of Disabilities."

Ward's Article Published

After presenting last year at the national conference for the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officer (AACRAO), Associate Vice President of Information and Data Management Janet Ward was encouraged to write an article outlining key principles shared during the conference session. Her article was recently published by AACRAO in the March 2010 edition of its online publication SEM Source: An Update on State of the Art Student Services. More

Professors Help Students Win Scholarships

Physics professors Hunter Close and Lane Seeley helped secure $105,000 in scholarships for seven SPU students who will be certified to teach physics. The PhysTEC Noyce Scholarship for the 2010-2011 will provide each student up to $15,000 toward the cost of attendance at SPU, including tuition, housing, books, and fees. As a PhysTEC Noyce Scholar, the students will also have access to professional development, networking and other opportunities to support their professional growth as physics teachers. The seven students are Kimberley Barnes, Zach Brenneman, Jordan Lance, Heidi Rowles, Marcus Tubbs, John Weisenfeld, and Beth Williams.

Martin Invited to Perform in Italy, and Upcoming Local Concerts

Leslie Martin, adjunct in organ and harpsichord, was invited, once again, to perform solo organ recitals last October in Lecce (Puglia), Italy, as part of the Stagione Concertistica Internazionale d'Organo “Ars Organi Girolamo Frescobaldi." He performed on historic Italian organs of the 18 century, and his standing-room-only concerts received wide acclaim. His first appearance at this prestigious European organ festival took place in October of 2001.

Locally, Martin serves as director of music at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Seattle, known for its Evensong and Bach Cantata series. The next cantata “Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats," BWV 42, (That Evening the Disciples Were Gathered Together) will be presented at Evensong on Sunday, April 11, at 5 p.m. The cantata will be performed on baroque-period instruments with some of the region's finest early music experts. Leslie will give a pre-cantata lecture at 4:30 p.m., exploring the meaning and symbolism in the cantata. Les has back-transcribed a baroque string concerto grosso by Luigi Mancia, which he played on his recent Italian concert tour. Surviving until now only as a transcription for organ by J. S. Bach's cousin, Johann Gottfried Walther, this work will be heard again at the April 11 performance – perhaps for the first time in several hundred years – as a work for string orchestra. The following week, on Sunday, April 18, at 2:30 p.m., Les will be the featured soloist in an organ concerto of Georg Frideric Händel, appearing with Philharmonia Northwest, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Seattle.
