Chapel: “A Theology of Work"

At the Tuesday morning gather service this quarter, the Office of University Ministries and the Center for Worship are partnering with the School of Business and Economics for a series on "a theology of work," exploring the place of business, work, and vocation in the Christian mission to live as a blessing to the whole world. Join us April 13 at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church to hear Dr. Uli Chi, founder of Computer Human Interaction, LLC, and chairman of the board of governors of Regent College, an international graduate school of Christian studies in Vancouver, Canada.

Human Trafficking and Slavery Lecture: The Role of Business in Addressing Modern-Day Slavery

There are more than 27 million slaves in the world today. That is more than at the height of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. For Christians, this concern must take priority, and business has a crucial role to play in addressing human trafficking and slavery. To prompt awareness, consider the theological mandate for action, and promote involvement in combating this terrible injustice, the Center for Integrity in Business, in partnership with SPU's The Abolition and the Center for Biblical and Theological Education, will host a free lecture with David Batstone, president of the Not for Sale Campaign, at SPU Friday, April 16, 9:30–11 a.m. in Bertona 1. In addition to his leadership at Not for Sale, Batstone is a professor of ethics at the University of San Francisco, and is founder and president of Right Reality, an international social venture firm. Batstone has authored seven books, the two most recent being Not For Sale (HarperOne, 2007), and Saving the Corporate Soul (Jossey-Bass, 2003). He was a member of the founding team of Business 2.0 magazine, and served six years as executive editor of Sojourners magazine. He has contributed articles to The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, Wired, and SPIN.

Save the Date – Annual Benefits Fair May 4

Update for Camp Casey Faculty/Staff House Summer Reservations

This is the last week for Faculty/Staff House summer reservation requests, which are due by April 16. The new nightly rates for the Faculty/Staff house are $15 per night with a two-night minimum. Make sure to include the following information in your request: name, email address, two contact phone numbers, mailing address, SPU ID number, and your first, second, and third choice for dates. The maximum stay is seven days. Arrivals and departures are on Mondays if you are staying for the maximum time. The check out time is 9 a.m. for Monday departures. This is a firm time, so keep this in mind as you put forth your requests. Please submit requests by email to for the reservation period June 14-September 26. Take advantage of your benefits of being a full-time, regular employee at SPU. Scheduling for summer is done on a point system based on years of SPU service, and previous stays at Casey. Please send your request by April 16. You will hear by April 23 if you have been awarded a stay or not. Haiti Benefit Concert

Come and support World Concern and One Day's Wages in their ongoing Haiti relief efforts by enjoying a concert featuring three fantastic and diverse Seattle bands on Friday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Center in First Free Methodist Church. There will be free refreshments courtesy of local bakeries. The suggested minimum donation is $4 or more for SPU students, $6 or more for non-SPU students, and $10 or more for the general public.

Estate-Planning Essentials: A How-to Seminar

Biblical and Theological Education Grants – Apply by May 15

The Center for Biblical and Theological Education (CBTE) provides grants to empower eligible faculty and staff to receive and conduct biblical and theological education (BTE), to explore BTE's intersections with specific academic disciplines, and to enable related consultations. Faculty or academic units may examine how the biblical text and broader theological implications affect or may be applied to their discipline, curriculum, or research. Staff Member of the Year Nominations Due by April 14

Do you know a co-worker who “engages" the SPU vision, someone who exemplifies a “grace-filled" attitude, displays competence on the job, and models Christian character? If so, please take a few minutes and submit your nominee for Staff Member of the Year. There are two categories for nominations – non-exempt staff (the Oral V. Hemry Award), and exempt staff. The staff members ultimately selected will each receive a $1,000 honorarium from the University, and be honored at the President's Spring Forum on May 11 in Brougham Pavilion. Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Scholarship by April 20

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2010–11 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate him or her for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship receive a $750 cash grant, and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of their choice. “Sammy is my 7-year-old Maine Coon. Fourteen pounds and no fat. And well over 3 feet long. I got him on an impulse and have loved him ever since. He is full of personality. In fact, the complex I live in has grounded him to my unit, given his overly social behavior and sitting on cars. He opens doors (which is quite a shock to people leaving their home unlocked), cleans out cupboards looking for crackers, and keeps his little sister in line by sitting on her with a head lock. He is a high-maintenance kitty, but I love him for it. There isn't anyone (except the lady next door with the footprints on her car) who has met Sammy and not fallen in love with him. The next speaker in the library's “Thursday Food for Thought" lecture series is University Communications staff member and novelist Jeffrey Overstreet, who will read from his new novel, Raven's Ladder, and talk about Jesus' storytelling style. Woodward Gives Baseball Presentation

While the dominant preoccupations of this year's annual convention of the Popular Culture Association in St. Louis were vampire fiction and film and “Fat Studies" (no, really), baseball got its due in the sports area. One session put together by Professor of History Bill Woodward focused on baseball and cultural analysis. Bill presented on “Cultural Analysis: Baseball and America," showing how developments in baseball illustrate trends in the larger society. Joining him was former adjunct history faculty member Bill Mullins, who made a presentation titled “Urban Leadership Analysis: Baseball and Seattle." Also joining Bill was Maj. Will Woodward, USAF, who regularly assists in Bill's USEM on the history of baseball, who talked about “Statistical Analysis: Baseball and the World." A preliminary invitation to submit for an anthology now in preparation was extended to all three by the Sports Area chair. The conference was March 31-April 3.

Diddams Appointed to Editorial Boards

Margaret Diddams, professor of industrial/organizational psychology, has been appointed to the editorial boards of the Journal of Psychology and Theology and the Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion. She also serves on the executive committee of the Management, Spirituality, and Religion interest group in the Academy of Management.

CPY Faculty Speak Around the World During Spring Break

During Spring Break, three faculty members from the Department of Clinical Psychology were working in international locations. Associate Professor John Thoburn taught two courses in Beijing, China, on marriage and family therapy. The courses were for the first-year cohort of Christian Chinese nationals. One course was on family-therapy ethics, and the other was on human sexuality. Associate Professor Tom Wall participated in the Oxford Round Table at Hertford College in England. He presented a paper titled "In Search of a Pedagogy for Character, Competence, and Fitness in Ethics Training for Graduate Psychology." This was followed by a discussion with the other faculty participants from colleges and universities presenting in a program titled "Perspectives on Ethical Sentiments." Associate Professor Lynette Bikos traveled to Turkey to the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. She gave a lecture and lab sessions on the statistical technique of structural equation modeling. She also worked with her Turkish co-investigators, and with her doctoral advisee, Renee Gibbs, who has been at METU since September collecting data for her dissertation. At Ege University in Izmir, Turkey, she led a workshop for faculty, research assistants, and doctoral students on getting published in Western journals.

Ferreiro's Book Published

A book by Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro titled "The Barbarian Invasions and Settlement in Gaul and Iberia: A Select Historiographical Reflection," (El Tiempo de los Bárbaros. Pervivencia y Transformación en 'Galia' e 'Hispania,' siglos V-VI d.C.), was published by Zona Arqueológica 11 (2010) 108-121. This volume gathers the leading scholars from North America and Europe to provide the most up-to-date scholarship across all disciplines on the transformation from Roman Gaul and Iberia to Germanic Gaul and Iberia.
