|SUB ATM Removed|
During the week of July 11, Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union will be removing the ATM currently located in the Student Union Building. Several other ATMs are available around campus for your convenience — including a credit union ATM (BECU) adjacent to the SPU Bookstore, and the U.S. Bank parking lot along Nickerson Street
|Diversified Participant Counselor on Campus July 18|
Scott Jozefowski, Diversified participant counselor, will be on campus Monday, July 18, for individual appointments. Please take advantage of this time to ask questions, review your investment options and make sure you are on track to meet your retirement goals.
Reasons you may want to meet with the Diversified counselor:
1. You are not currently utilizing the SPU Employee Savings Plan – 403(b) and you are interested in learning how contributing to your retirement would affect your monthly income.
2. You would like to consolidate a retirement plan from a former employer to your Diversified account.
3. You have account balances remaining at TIAA-CREF and you would like to discuss the option to consolidate your funds with your account at Diversified.
4. You have a 403(b) account balance remaining at Fidelity and you would like to discuss the option to consolidate your funds with your account at Diversified.
5. You are interested in learning about the tools Diversified has available to assist you in your retirement planning.
6. You would like some assistance understanding how to utilize your online Diversified account.
NOTE: If you are considering consolidating, please bring the most recent copy of your account statements from your other retirement plan(s) to your meeting to assist with these services.
To schedule an appointment, go to the Diversified Online Scheduler
1) Click on “click here" to register as a first-time visitor, or if you don't
recall the username and password you set up previously.
2) Complete the required information including setting up a user name and
password. Click the "NEXT" button on the lower right side of the screen.
3) Click on the Make Appointments tab in the upper left corner of the
screen. Select the Meeting Type (One-On-One), Meeting Location (HR) and Room
4) Once the calendar appears, click on the day you would like to meet (Monday, July 18); under Appointment availability select the time you would like to meet. You will be taken to the Review Appointment Details screen, click on the Make Appointment button, bottom right corner of screen. You will receive an email confirmation of the appointment you set.
|Thank You for Contributing Your Eyeglasses|
The VSP donation box in the Office of Human Resources overflowed with 59 donated glasses on June 30. Each day, we watched the pile grow until it spilled out of the collection box. Thank you for thinking about those less fortunate around the world and taking the time and effort to remember to send glasses our way. There are undoubtedly people who will see clearly for the first time because of these gifts.
|Mailing and Copying Services Summer Schedule|
Mailing Services is now on a summer schedule. Pickup and delivery of mail and packages will be in the afternoon only. You may come and pick up your mail or packages prior to the afternoon delivery. The hours will stay the same Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. If your office will be closed for a certain amount of time, contact Assistant Manager Elaine Stevens at 206-281-2619 or Manager Frank Kinard at 206-281-2663 as to the dates and times, and they would be happy to hold the mail for you. |The Latest on iTunes U: George MacDonald's “The Consuming Fire"|
Student Sean Hudspeth reads a selection from George MacDonald's Unspoken Sermons. These were written primarily to his wife, Louisa MacDonald. The Unspoken Sermons were published between 1867 and 1889. Many people have been comforted by these words, and this recording is intended to bring this comfort to modern listeners. “The Consuming Fire" is a sermon about the love of God. MacDonald describes the eschatological encounter with God's love as an encounter with fire. The “fire of God's love" is a fire that purges impurities, and a fire that indwells. It is the presence of God. More

|Scheuerman Wins Award|
The Washington State Historical Society (WSHS) recently gave an award to Assistant
Professor of Education Richard Scheuerman for his article “Chief Cleveland Kamiakin and 20th Century Political Change on the Colville Indian Reservation." The article received the WSHS “Gates Award," recognizing an outstanding article on regional studies. Scheuerman co-wrote the article with Michael Finley, tribal council chair of the Colville Confederated Tribes.
The article, published by the University of Washington in Pacific Northwest Historical Quarterly, was based on a recently discovered series of taped interviews with Chief Kamiakin in the 1950s. SPU's Instructional Technology Services department digitally restored the translation by Yakama elder Carrie Jim Schuster. Scheuerman and Finley discovered the recordings while conducting research for their recent book, Finding Chief Kamiakin: The Life and Legacy of a Northwest Patriot. The book was a finalist for “2010 Washington Book of the Year" by the Washington
Library Association. Dick would like to acknowledge the valuable encouragement he received at
SPU for his research on issues related to Native American education and history
from Arthur Ellis, Bill Woodward, Mícheál Roe, and Rick Eigenbrood.
|Denton Appointed Editor of Curriculum in Context|
David Denton, assistant professor of education, was recently appointed as editor of the journal Curriculum in Context, which is published by the Washington State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. David will serve as the lead editor and Dr. Mike Dunn, superintendent of the Northeast Educational Service District 101 in Spokane, will serve as co-editor.
|Lee's Paper Published|
A research paper co-authored by Jaeil Lee was published in Clothing and
Textiles Research Journal, the foremost research journal in clothing and
textiles research area and one of the Social Sciences Citation
Index (SSCI) journals. The paper, co-authored with C. Ulasewicz, is
titled “International and Beyond: Reflecting on the Identity of International
Textile and Apparel Association," 29(2), 165-182. The purpose of this study was
to identify the attitudes and perceptions regarding the International Textile and
Apparel Association (ITAA), which is the foremost international research and
education organization in clothing and textiles field. This study was conducted
with the goal of providing suggestions for future strategic planning regarding
its international identity, and its impacts for the organization and membership. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods was applied. Research findings suggest ideas for ITAA to consider as it continues to grow and respond to the needs of its current and future global membership.
