Little Family Scholarship Endowment

SPU is pleased to announce the establishment of the Little Family Scholarship Endowment. Major Gift Officer Kristi Nelson worked with Myrna Little to establish this endowment to honor her husband, Harry Little. A beloved husband and father, Harry fought cancer for seven years. During that time, the Little family appreciated the help they received to cope with a family member battling a terminal illness. As a result of the support they received and the family's strong ties to SPU, Myrna wanted to honor her husband by establishing this endowment to provide scholarships to graduate students in the medical family therapy program.




Making a Room Request: New Email Address

Need to request a classroom for a review session, and not sure who to ask, or when they're in the office? Student Academic Services has a new classroom request email address at SASRooms@spu.edu. Remember, all room needs that aren't related to a specific class should be sent to Conference Services.




Staff Payroll Change?

The 15th of each month is the last day to make adjustments or additions to your staff payroll check. If you have any changes, call Carol Clement, payroll lead in the Finance Office, at 206-281-2533.




New Offices for A.C.E. Language Institute

“A.C.E. Language Institute has moved into a beautiful location at 18 Dravus Street, suite 100. We're just a couple of businesses away from the Facility and Project Management offices. After 35 years at SPU and eight different locations on campus, we're looking forward to continuing our partnership with the university. You are all invited to stop by anytime. Reminder: Read or Listen to Lectio

This free online weekly reading program allows you to explore God's Word with the guidance of an outstanding biblical scholar who has a deeply personal Christian faith. You also have the option of "going deeper" in your study of each week's Scripture passage through links to other commentaries and resources. You can read the Lectio, listen to a podcast, or both. Over the course of four years, you'll encounter a majority of the Bible – and do so in tandem with SPU as students, faculty, and staff focus on the same weekly Scripture in Chapel, community Bible studies, and other worship events. Open House at New Weter Coffee Kiosk

Please join us at an open house at the new Weter Coffee Kiosk on Wednesday, August 10, 12–1:30 p.m. The kiosk now offers Starbucks Coffee, which replaces Pura Vida. There will be free giveaways, music, coffee tasting, pastry bites, and 50 percent off Starbucks drinks.




Mailing and Copying Services Summer Schedule

Mailing Services is now on a summer schedule. Pickup and delivery of mail and packages will be in the afternoon only. You may come and pick up your mail or packages prior to the afternoon delivery. The hours will stay the same Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. If your office will be closed for a certain amount of time, contact Assistant Manager Elaine Stevens at 206-281-2619 or Manager Frank Kinard at 206-281-2663 as to the dates and times, and they would be happy to hold the mail for you. The Fac/Staff Bulletin is published every Monday during the academic year. During the summer, the Bulletin is published every other week. If you have information or event news, send it as soon as possible to Fac/Staff Bulletin editor Tracy Norlen at fsb-editor@spu.edu, or submit an item directly from the Bulletin. The next deadline is Thursday, August 18. The next Bulletin will be published Monday, August 22.

DeBell Wins Innovation Award

Gail DeBell, coordinator for the Study Abroad program, recently won an award from the GlobalLinks Learning Abroad program at the NAFSA national convention in Vancouver, B.C. NAFSA is the association for international educators. Gail was given the “Innovation Award" for her work streamlining and standardizing the study abroad program, and developing a program at Sichuan University in China through AsiaLearn. Overstreet's Fantasy Series Recognized

Jeffrey Overstreet, a communications specialist in University Communications, received more positive reviews for his now-complete four-book fantasy series The Auralia Thread. The series, which includes Auralia's Colors, Cyndere's Midnight, Raven's Ladder, and The Ale Boy's Feast – was highlighted in World magazine, where a reviewer called the concluding volume “a mythic allegory of depth and vivid imagery that celebrates art through prose impressionism." A reviewer at Touchstone: A Journal of Mere Christianity wrote that he is “tentatively prepared to declare Jeffrey Overstreet … the best Christian fantasist working today." He added that “contemporary fantasists tend to use words badly. They strive for the same effects as Tolkien or Lewis, but lack the rich erudition of those scholars. Their prose is stilted and artificial, their word choices poor. Overstreet does not suffer from this problem. He uses words deftly, as Rembrandt used brushes and paint." A book giveaway is being hosted at Beliefnet.com where Kris Rasmussen writes, “I can't imagine a better book series to fall in love with this summer if you are fantasy fiction buff – and even if you are not." Summers Presents at Conference

Don Summers, clinical instructor in the School of Business and Economics, gave a presentation at the Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Conference in New Orleans on July 13. The title of the presentation was "The Challenges of Operating Social Enterprises: A Two-Case Analysis."




Article by Mezulis, Students Published

An article written by Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology Amy Mezulis and several doctoral students was published in the journal Cognitive Therapy and Research. The title of the article was "Integrating affective and cognitive vulnerabilities to depression: Examining individual difference in cognitive responses to induced stress." The students, Jordan Simonson, Orlando Sanchez, and Chris Arger completed the research project as part of their second year in the clinical psychology doctoral program.

A new book by Writer-in-Residence Greg Wolfe was highlighted in the weekly “Local Books" column in The Seattle Times on July 25. The book is titled Beauty Will Save the World: Recovering the Human in an Ideological Age. More




MILESTONES

Longtime Casey Staff Member Bob Breedlove Passes Away

Robert Breedlove, who worked as a maintenance mechanic at Casey Conference Center for 28 years before retiring in January 2006, passed away on July 22. In addition to general building repairs, Bob was a gifted carpenter and cared deeply about restoring the Casey facilities. His obituary was published in the Whidbey News-Times. More




Welcome, Shiloh Mattea McCauley

Shiloh Mattea McCauley was born May 23 to Interim Web Designer Melissa McCauley, and her husband, Zach. Shiloh was born at 12:14 a.m., and weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 20 3/4 inches long. Melissa says, “So far she likes chewing on her hands, ‘talking' with daddy, staring at lights, taking baths, and being naked in general. She doesn't like being left out of the conversation, getting sun in her eyes, having the hiccups, and needing to hang out in her car seat while we're stuck in traffic. It's been fun to meet this little person and watch her personality slowly emerge!" Select the link for a photo of Shiloh taking her first bath. More
