|Mailing and Copying Services Has Moved|
Mailing and Copying Services is now located next to the Bookstore in the former Bookstore Annex. The entrance is 323 W. Nickerson Avenue, and the front door is located on the Nickerson Street side of the building. Business hours, route times, staff, and excellent customer service remains the same.
|Faculty, Staff Invited to Hear Israeli Professor llan Pappé|
Israeli professor Ilan Pappé will speak at an informal luncheon and conversation with faculty from around the Northwest on Monday, September 19, at 11 a.m. in the Falcon Lounge in Royal Brougham Pavilion. Faculty and staff are invited to attend. Pappé will speak at Seattle's Town Hall later that day along with Professor and Founder of “Americans for Peace Now" Mark Rosenblum on the topic “Palestine at the United Nations: Confronting the Israel-Palestine Question — Elusive Answers, Enduring Hope." |New Website for Student Retention|
Watch for a new website to launch this month that will help students graduate on time. The website will help students see their progress and the next steps needed to graduate.
|Hours of Operation for Gwinn Commons|
Gwinn Commons Dining Hall will open Thursday, September 8, for meal services for early arrival participants. Gwinn will be open 8-8:30 a.m. for breakfast, closed for lunch, and open 5-5:30 p.m. for dinner. Meal schedules will be posted on the doors in the following locations for your convenience: Gwinn Commons, C-Store, Weter Lounge, Demary Hall, Library, Mailing Services, and the SUB. |Memorial 5k Run/Walk for Alumnus Sept. 10|
Nic Madrazo, a 2005 graduate in business, was killed in 2008 by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan while serving in the U.S. military. In his memory, his family started “N.A.M.E.S.," a registered 501(c) (3) charitable organization providing various needs for military families. The NAMES foundation is hosting its first 5k run/walk in Bothell on Saturday, September 10. Help keep Nic's memory alive by volunteering to help with the event or participating in the race. |Retirement Celebration for Dick Smith on Sept. 9|
The School of Education invites you to join us for an open house retirement celebration honoring the 23-year tenure of Richard E. “Dick" Smith, professor of education, on Friday, September 9, 5-7 p.m. in the Fine Center at First Free Methodist Church. Dick is a tireless advocate of educational leaders across the state of Washington. He has taught countless principals, program administrators, and superintendents over the course of his time here, making a vast impact on education in Washington state. |Newby Compositions Performed at MLK Jr. Ceremonies|
Musical compositions by Stephen Michael Newby, director of University Ministries and the Center for Worship, were part of the recent Martin Luther King Jr. festivities in Washington D.C. On August 24, the Duke Ellington Vocal Ensemble performed Newby's "Freedom Train" at the Washington D.C. Convention Center. The Duke Ellington School of the Arts Concert Choir and Orchestra was schedule to perform "Beloved Community" and "This is How He Loved" for the Partners in the Dream/MLK Jr. Dedication Celebration at the Washington D.C. Convention Center on August 28, but the performance was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene and will be performed at a later date.
|Faculty, Students Meet With Ambassador Locke|
Sixteen SPU students, and School of Business and Economics professors Ryan
LaBrie and Kimberly Sawers, recently spent an hour at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing,
China, in a private briefing with Ambassador Gary Locke. Ambassador Locke gave a
very personal talk to the SPU students and faculty, referencing his fondness for
Seattle Pacific, growing up going to his father's store on the corner of Florentia
and Nickerson, and living in his home on Queen Anne. Locke shared his vision for
the future of U.S. and China relationships, and what he and this administration
want to accomplish. He was very impressed with the courage the SPU students
exhibited in choosing China to study abroad. All agreed the visit with
Ambassador Locke was the highlight of the trip.
|Summers in Vietnam|
Don Summers, School of Business and Economics clinical instructor, participated in the Social Venture Awards Ceremony at Duy Tan University, Vietnam, on August 18. Vietnamese student participants who competed at SPU's Social Venture Plan Competition Showcase in April spoke of the positive impact the event had on them. Two of these students will be exchange students in the United States early next year.
|Poznanska Appointed Advisor|
Joanna Poznanska, professor of international business, was invited to become an advisor to the executive board of directors of the Polish American Chamber of Commerce Pacific Northwest. She was involved in organizing the July 25 conference on trade and business development between Poland and the Pacific Northwest. The conference was hosted at the World Trade Center in Seattle. Keynote speakers included Poland's Ambassador to the United States Robert Kupiecki, Boeing Vice President Nicole Piasecki, and Weyerhaeuser CEO Daniel Fulton. The conference had extensive coverage on KOMO-AM.
|McKenna in Light & Life Magazine|
Rob McKenna, chair of the department of industrial/organizational psychology, was featured in a recent Light & Life magazine for his service on the Commission on Leadership Development for the Free Methodist Church of North America. The article highlights his research and the online leadership portal that is helping nearly 1,000 pastors get intentional about their development as leaders. Read the article online.

|Former Staff Member Phil Rand Passes Away|
Former Computer and Information Systems (CIS) staff member Phil Rand passed away
on August 25 after a brief battle with cancer. Phil graduated from
SPU (SPC at the time) in June 1977. For the next 10 years, he worked as a
programmer/analyst at three Seattle based companies. He returned to SPU in the
fall of 1988 as a senior systems analyst, specializing in Digital Equipment
Corporation (DEC) hardware and software (VMS, VAX systems, DECnet, etc.). He
worked in CIS on the Central Systems team for nearly 20 years until spring 2008.
After leaving SPU, he moved to Yakima. In an email to the CIS staff, Assistant
Director Gerard Duguay wrote, “I remember Phil as a soft-spoken, dedicated CIS
employee. His responsibilities included all things ‘Central;' he was our DNS guru
for some time. Apart from the office, Phil was passionate about stocks, finances,
and sailing. If memory serves me right, he even built his own sailboat! There is a
painting in the Apps Team office that once belonged to Phil ... one that I believe
he was quite fond of and left behind to brighten the office of those that followed
him. Phil was a devout Jesus follower and is now with the Lord." Phil's obituary
appeared in the Yakima Herald Republic on August 27. More
