|Black History Celebration Chapel: Offices Closed|
The Black History Celebration Chapel is Tuesday, February 14, at 9:30 a.m. in
First Free Methodist Church. Rev. Robert Jeffrey Sr., pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, will speak on “The Cross of Discipleship" from Mark 8:22-10:52. As a part of the celebration of Black History Month, the service will feature special music by the SPU Gospel Choir and a presentation by members of the Black Student Union. All campus offices will be closed during the chapel so SPU community members may attend.
|SAS Counselors Accepting Drop-In Appointments|
Academic counselors in Student Academic Services will take drop-in appointments for students during the week of registration in Demaray Hall. These brief appointments are for students with questions regarding Spring Quarter registration. Academic counselors cannot remove faculty advisor holds, so students must meet with their faculty advisor first. Drop-In appointments will be available during the following hours: Tuesday, February 14, 10:30 a.m.-4.p.m.; Wednesday, February 15, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thursday, February 16, 10 a.m-4 p.m.; Friday, February 17, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
|“Evangelicals and the Challenge of Secular Knowledge"|
Karl Giberson, co-author of the Anointed: Evangelical Truth in a Secular Age, will give a lecture on Tuesday, February 14, at 7 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. His lecture is titled “Evangelicals and the Challenge of Secular Knowledge." Giberson is an internationally known science-and-religion scholar, speaker, and writer. He has written nine books and more than 200 articles, reviews, and essays on science and religion. His books include Oracles of Science: Celebrity Scientists Versus God and Religion; Saving Darwin, a Washington Post “Best Book of 2008;" and The Language of Science & Faith (with Francis Collins). This event is sponsored by the SPU's School of Psychology, Family, and Community. The event is free and open to the public.
|Thursday Food for Thought: David Leong|
David Leong, assistant professor of missiology, reads from his forthcoming book Street Signs at the next Thursday Food for Thought on February 16 at 12:30 p.m. in the Library Reading Room. He will discuss the local neighborhood context of the Rainier Valley that is shaping his ongoing research on missional engagement in the city. Bring a brown-bag lunch if you'd like. More

|Donate to “Be a Match" Registry|
Leukemia kills more children in the United States than any other disease, which is why SPU students are taking action to help find patients of leukemia and other bone and blood disorders the match they need. Students are hosting “Give a Spit About Cancer" campaign on Wednesday, February 22, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. in the SUB. Volunteers will swab the inside of your cheek for a salvia sample. After three to four weeks, all donors will be tested and automatically added anonymously to the Be The Match Registry®. A simple swab is all it takes to register as a bone marrow donor and possibly save the life of a bone or blood cancer patient. Learn more at the website. More
|Faculty Concert Feb. 15|
SPU music faculty will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, in the E.E. Bach Theater inside SPU's McKinley Hall. Music faculty Julian Catford and Robert Swan will perform, with guest performances by Miriam Shames and Marjorie Talvi. The concert will feature piano, guitar, cello, and violin. The concert is free and wheelchair accessible.

An educational forum on “Homelessness: A Crisis of Affordable Housings" will be held Thursday, February 16, 1-2 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. The forum is part of the activities surrounding the visit of Tent City 3. More
|SPU Scholar Award Competition|
On Friday, February 17, the Undergraduate Admissions (UGA) office will welcome 50 outstanding applicants to campus to compete for SPU Scholar Awards (full-tuition scholarship). These students will participate in a number of interviews and discussions, while also experiencing campus life through tours, class visits, and lunch in Gwinn Commons. UGA will also host a second competition with 50 additional students on Monday, February 27. Please warmly welcome these students and their families to SPU. |Art Center Gallery Exhibit Ends February 17|
SPU's Art Center Gallery currently features an “otherworldly" installation of 3-D images and time-based media by adjunct art faculty member Kayo Nakamura. The exhibit runs until February 17. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. More
|Friday Night Prayer|
Friday night prayer is an opportunity for students, faculty, and members of the community to gather and intercede for SPU. We meet every Friday night from 7-9 p.m. in “The Room" at First Free Methodist Church.
|Retirement Readiness Seminar for Those 45 and Older|
The Office of Human Resources invites faculty and staff to the second annual Retirement Readiness Seminar on Tuesday, February 28, 6-8 p.m. in the Queen Anne Room in Upper Gwinn Commons This evening is filled with information and resources to help plan now for the retirement you want later. Spouses are welcome, and light hors d'oeuvres will be served. Please RSVP to HR's Pension and Data Specialist Jackie Belz at email@example.com, and indicate if your spouse will be joining you. The seminar will review Medicare, retirement income and expenses, investing through Retirement, Social Security, Emeriti Health Solutions program, long-term care, and life insurance.
|Walking/Activity Challenge: SPU Globe Trekkers on the Way!|
From Associate Director of Human Resources Carrie McCrimmon: “We're aiming for a
March 5 start date for this year's ‘SPU Globe Trekkers.' Mark your calendars and
lace up those athletic shoes. Last year, 167 faculty and staff signed up. As a
group, we walked, ran, biked, pumped iron, did aerobics, and participated in yoga or
martial arts for 19,751 miles during an eight-week period. We didn't quite make it
around the world – but we were super close. I know we can absolutely hit the mark
this year. This eight-week walking and activity challenge helps you track and report
your steps/miles walked, along with other physical activity. It's then combined with
other SPU Globe Trekkers. Totals move us farther around the world and reveal
interesting facts about a new location in the world. Could you use a little
support? Have you thought about creating your own team? Teams can compete with one
another – you just need a team name. Challenge each other for bragging rights or
come up with your own prize(s). We need everyone – and that means you! The more
people participating, the further we travel. All faculty and staff at all
fitness levels are welcome and encouraged to participate. Pedometers are

|Who Are Your Beneficiaries?|
When was the last time you completed a beneficiary form? A beneficiary form tells SPU (and the life insurance company) who should receive funds from your life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance should you pass away. Your primary beneficiaries receive the funds first, but if one or more of them pass away before you do, then your contingent beneficiaries would receive the benefits. Visit the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the Rewards page to learn what you can do to earn points on the website. Additionally, you may certify that you have completed a myriad of other activities that carry various point values. Also, visit “Other Ways to Earn Rewards." |Thoburn Named "Family Psychologist of the Year"|
Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology John Thoburn has been named the “Family Psychologist of the Year" for 2012 by the Society for Family Psychology (American Psychological Association, Division 43). This is in recognition “of [his] outstanding sustained contributions to the field of family psychology, especially through [his] humanitarian work." He will be presented with the award at the presidential reception of the society at the APA Convention in Orlando this August. Congratulations, Professor Thoburn!
|Brown Receives Grant|
Associate Professor of Music Carlene Brown received a $10,000 grant from the Wilson Trust Music Therapy Project, administered by the American Music Therapy Association. The funds will support SPU's music therapy program. Brown is also the director of the music therapy program. Congratulations, Professor Brown!
|Van Duzer Keynote Speaker|
Jeff Van Duzer, dean of the School of Business and Economics, was a keynote speaker on February 4 at the “Believers in Business" conference in New York City. The conference was sponsored by the Yale School of Management Christian Fellowship and Intervarsity in partnership with The Kings College (NYC) Rivendell Institute, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New Canaan Society, CMF Partners, and Regent College.
