FACULTY & STAFF NEWS

McFarland's Paper Accepted for Publication

A new paper by Associate Professor of Biochemistry Benjamin Farland has been accepted for publication in the journal Protein Science. The paper's title is “Combining different design strategies for rational affinity maturation of the MICA-NKG2D interface." The student and alumni co-authors are Samuel Henager '12, Melissa Hale '12, Nicholas Maurice '11, Erin Dunnington '11, Carter Swanson '10, Megan Peterson '10, Joseph Ban '10, David Culpepper '10, Luke Davies '09, and Lisa Sanders '09. This team of students led others in biochemistry classes over a four-year study comparing the effects of protein mutations as measured in the lab to the predictions made by computers. Benjamin and students eventually found a set of mutations, predicted by computer programs, when applied to the human immune system protein MIC-A, increased its affinity for its receptor NKG2D by a factor of 50. This may be used as a trigger to turn the immune system on or off in cancer or heart disease.
