Trick-or-Treaters Welcome in Emerson, Ashton Residence Halls

Where are you and your family going trick-or-treating for Halloween this year? Come to the SPU residence halls on Wednesday, October 31, for a warm and safe (with only a hint of scary) experience! Residents of Ashton Hall will decorate the hallways and balcony lounges of each of Ashton's 12 floors for a Halloween experience your children will love from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Emerson Hall will welcome trick-or-treaters 5-7 p.m. to tour through the hall and collect goodies from participating rooms. This is a fun, free, safe activity for the whole family, so mark your calendars and spread the word!




Halloween News from Campus Dining

This week around campus, Campus Dining is offering some “spooky specials" for those with a little holiday spirit. Come dressed up in costume on Wednesday, October 31, to receive these incredible discounts: get a grande boo-mocha for 50 percent off at Academic Perks and Common Grounds locations; all items at the Grill and Medley in the SUB are 50 percent off, and sandwiches at Einsteins and Subway are 50 percent off (Subway footlong only). This Week's “Thursday Food for Thought": Julia Siemens

You are invited to bring a brown-bag lunch to the library on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. to hear SPU faculty and staff authors read from their latest books and writings. A question-and-answer time follows. On November 1, Editor Julia Siemens will talk about what goes into the production of etc, SPU's popular magazine for high schoolers and new students; read some of her favorite excerpts; and share some lessons learned in the tension between journalism and marketing. More




Authors of New Book on Reconciliation Come to Campus

Dr. Allan Boesak of South Africa, visiting professor and theologian at Butler University, and Dr. Curtiss Paul DeYoung, professor of reconciliation studies at Bethel University, will talk about their new book Radical Reconciliation: Beyond Political Pietism and Christian Quietism on Thursday, November 1, at 1 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall 109. Faculty, Staff Invited to Church Leaders Forum

"Catalytic Leadership for Challenging Times" is the title of the next Church Leaders Forum with Brenda Salter McNeil, associate professor and director of reconciliation studies. Brenda will provide practical ideas for how church leaders can give perspective and guidance to the communities they serve during difficult times. With more than 25 years of experience in the field of racial, ethnic, and gender reconciliation, Brenda was recently named by Christianity Today as one of the top “50 women to watch" for in her work shaping the church and culture. Faculty and staff are invited to this forum on Wednesday, November 7, 11:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Lunch is $12. Register online. More




Templeton Award Winner on Campus

Dr. Michael Legaspi, instructor in philosophy and religious studies at Phillips Academy and recipient of the 2011 John Templeton Award for Theological Promise for his book The Death of Scripture and the Rise of Biblical Studies, will be on campus Thursday, November 1. He will give a lecture titled “The Role of the Church in Biblical Exegesis: A Panel on Theological Interpretation" at 9:30 a.m. in Demaray Hall 150, and then give an afternoon lecture at 3:30 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. This event is sponsored by the School of Theology and open to the public.

SPU Forum on Educational Issues: Unpacking Teacher Evaluation Models

The School of Education (SOE) presents “Unpacking Teacher Evaluation Models: A Conversation With Dr. Bob Marzano" on Friday, November 2, 9:30 a.m.– 3 p.m. on campus. Dr. Marzano is executive director of the Learning Sciences Marzano Center for Teacher and Leadership Evaluation. He is a nationally recognized researcher in education, as well as a speaker, trainer, and author of more than 30 books and 150 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention.
Starting in 2012, school districts in the state of Washington are required to select a “teacher evaluation instrument." Among three available choices is the Marzano Causal Teacher Evaluation Model. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are internationally known and widely practiced by both teachers and administrators. The forum will also include discussion with SOE faculty and staff regarding teacher evaluation model research opportunities. In addition, the forum will stimulate topic ideas for doctoral studies and include significant time for follow-up conversations. Morning sessions and lunch will be held in Upper Gwinn Commons. Afternoon sessions will be held in First Free Methodist Church. The facilitator will be SPU Professor of Educational Leadership Thomas Alsbury, who also serves as the director of the National UCEA Center for Research on the Superintendency and District Governance. Personal Safety Workshop for Women

The Office of Safety and Security is offering a “Personal Safety Workshop" for women on Monday, November 5, 12-1 p.m. in Falcon's Lounge in Brougham Pavilion. This interactive workshop is a place to discuss strategies for safety in the home, at work, and out and about. Come and learn about practical physical techniques and safety topics, including how your intuition can save your life, predatory behavior, blitz vs. con attacks, stalking, safety in public places, and creating a safe home and work environment. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. This event is sponsored by the Wellness Committee.




Camp Casey Winter, Spring Reservation Requests Due Nov. 5

Winter and spring reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates of stay are January 2, 2013, through June 10, 2013. Reservation requests are due by November 5. The winter/spring requests are selected by lottery and are not affected by summer stays at Casey. “Messiah" Sing-a-Long in Chapel Nov. 6

The Music Department and University Ministries and the Center for Worship are offering a “Messiah" sing-a-long in chapel on Tuesday, November 6, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church. Excerpts from choruses based on passages from Isaiah will be sung. Optional rehearsal with musicians is on Monday, November 5, at 6 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church sanctuary. Bring your own score or one will be provided. Whether you have sung this oratorio before, enjoy listening to it, or have never sung in a “Messiah" sing-a-long before, join us in singing this celebratory work!




Encourage Students to Participate in SVPC

The next Social Venture Plan Competition organizational meeting is Tuesday, November 6, 3 p.m., in the Library Seminar Room. The theme is “service that profits, profits that serve." Encourage your students to attend. Students at this meeting will learn how to enter this yearly competition (planned for next April), in which interdisciplinary teams create plans for sustainable businesses that meet real needs — and make a profit. Veterans Day Forum Nov. 8

A Veterans Day Forum will be held in Demaray Hall 150 on Thursday, November 8, 9:30-10:20 a.m. The forum will recognize the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans. It features a panel of SPU student veterans and military personnel who will talk about their military experiences and what God is calling them to now. The forum is a unique opportunity for the SPU campus to be educated about student veterans, and to shed light on the different faces and stories of SPU veterans. Please come and support the students. Emeriti Health Solutions Representative on Campus

Find out how SPU is helping you save for health care needs in retirement. Current contributions to eligible employee accounts are $78.75 per month — up to $945 per year. Check your paycheck details to see if you're already receiving it. On Wednesday, November 7, an Emeriti Health Solutions representative will on campus to explain how these contributions provide both reimbursement and guaranteed health care retirement benefits. For those approaching retirement in the next one to ten years, plan to attend the one hour session at 6 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. This session will address Emeriti insurance options and how they relate to Medicare. For those planning to retire more than 10 years from now or just generally interested in learning about the program, plan to attend the one hour session beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Library Seminar Room. This session will address reasons you need to save for retiree health care, unique tax advantages of the Emeriti program, options available under the program, and how to make your own contributions. If you wish to ask questions apart from a session, feel free to stop in the Library Seminar Room from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Spouses are encouraged to attend any or all sessions. Although the meetings focus on different audiences, you're encouraged to attend whichever your schedule allows. No RSVP required. Emeriti Health Solutions: Summary Annual Report

Every year the University is required to provide a summary annual report of the Emeriti Retirement Health Solutions plan. The report includes basic financial information for the Emeriti plan. You are invited to view the report for the plan year January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011 by visiting the website. More




Winter Quarter Registration

Registration for Winter Quarter is coming soon, All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students will seek to meet with their faculty advisor(s) for advising. Winter registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Tuesday, November 13. Ferreiro's Book Reviews Published

Two books reviews by Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro have been published. “Explanatio in Cantica Canticorum: Un vescovo esegeta nel regno visigoto" was published in The Medieval Review 2012. Series: PER VERBA, Testi mediolatini con traduzione, 27. Florence: Edizioni del Galluzzo per la Fondazione Ezio Franceschini, 2011. ccxxxii-220 p. The commentary on the Song of Songs by Justus of Urgell in sixth century Visigothic Hispania was one of the most complete and influential works in the subsequent Middle Ages. This is the first modern critical edition of this work, which has an important place in the history of exegesis of this biblical book. The second review, “Revista de poética medieval, Hacia una poética del sermon" 24 (2010) 289 p. was published in Medieval Sermons Studies 56 (2012) 63-64. This volume is a collection of essays about sermons from medieval Portugal and Spain that reflect a wide range of sermon genres. This is the first time some of these sermons have been subjected to scholarly scrutiny.




Capp's Book Published

In 2008-09, adjunct music professor Myrna Capp lectured and performed at the University of Namibia and did research on Namibian music. She interviewed seven Namibian musicians, capturing the moving narratives of these musician's lives and work in her book, Namibian Soundscapes: Music of the People and the Land. Photographer Grayson Capp collaborated with Myrna on this book, resulting in striking color images of the musicians and the stunning landscape of Namibia. The book was published in June 2012, and is available on the "Blurb" Self-Publishing website, and Kindle Direct Publishing site online. More




Langford's Article Published

An article by Assistant Professor of Theology Michael Langford titled “Hope for Halloween!" was published in the October 23 edition of YouthWorker e-journal. Michael also served on two panels at the National Youth Workers' Convention in San Diego, October 12-14. The first was on “Human Sexuality and Identity," and the second was on “Interdisciplinary Issues Impacting Christian Formation and Discipleship."




Grauf-Grounds, Sellers, and Alumna Present at National Health Care Conference

Chair and Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy Claudia Grauf-Grounds, Director of Medical Family Therapy (MFT) Certificate Program Tina Schermer Sellers, and MFT alumna Dr. Jackie Williams-Reade gave a presentation at the Collaborative Family Healthcare Conference in Austin, Texas, on October 5. Their well-attended workshop on “Best Practices of Supervision" helped to promote the work of psychotherapists in medical clinics. The conference participants are dedicated to the task of positively transforming our nation's health care delivery system.




Keuss Appointed to Advisory Board for Religion and the University Series

Professor of Christian Ministry, Theology, and Culture Jeff Keuss has been nominated to the advisory board for a series being published by Continuum/ T and T Clark titled “Religion and the University." Jeff will join the advisory board with former SPU faculty member Professor William Abraham (Southern Methodist University), Dr. Mervyn Davies, Professor Gavin D'Costa, and Professor Peter Hampson (Blackfriars, Oxford). The series will have as its remit the soliciting and publishing of scholarly monographs related to the place that religion, theology, and philosophy have to the various disciplines within the university, as well as the idea of a Christian university in the 21st century. Scherr Publishes Article

A paper by Physics Senior Research Scientist Rachel Scherr and Middle Tennessee State University Assistant Professor of Physics Brian Frank titled "Interactional processes for stabilizing conceptual coherences in physics" was published in Physical Review Special Topics - Physics Education Research in July. The paper describes mechanisms that may contribute to local stability of physics' students' reasoning and behavior in collaborative small-group work.




Feldman's Work on Display

Professor of Art Roger Feldman is one of 36 international artists whose work is included in "Art+Fe" an exhibit that opened in September in Lisbon, Portugal. The show is at the 17th century historical building, Sala do Risco, which houses the Municipal Art & Design Museum. Rodger's work is titled "Bridge."

Moyer Hall

"Moyer Hall, seen here in a photograph from the 1950s, turned 58 years old this year. Of the four current residence halls, it has housed students the longest. When Moyer was completed in July 1954, it accommodated 124 men (and no women – they all lived in other buildings), cost $400,000, and included classrooms and offices in the basement. An article in the October 21, 1954, Falcon boasted that 'Lounges on the second and third floors are open to men and women alike, days and on Friday and Sunday evenings until midnight.'
