New Lectio Series Begins

The Center for Biblical and Theological Education invites the SPU community to join us in our latest study of Scripture as we begin our new series this week in the Book of Acts, led by Professor of New Testament Jack Levison. You can follow along by becoming a subscriber to the weekly emails or podcasts, or simply find readings on our website at spu.edu/lectio. Lectio is a free resource, aimed at helping people encounter, explore, and embrace the Christian story — so please be sure to pass the message along to any who might be interested. It's a great tool for small groups, Sunday School classes, or personal study. Read or listen online. More




Women's Tuesday Brownbag Lectio Group: Acts

Join us in the Lower Weter large conference room at noon on Tuesday, March 26, as we begin a rollercoaster ride with the Spring Quarter Lectio on Acts, written and read by Professor of New Testament Jack Levison. Feel free to bring your lunch, and we'll read aloud from Acts and then listen to the Lectio as we follow along onscreen. Bibles are provided. We start at 12:10 p.m. and finish by 12:55. Academic Counseling Drop-In Appointments

Academic counselors in Student Academic Services (SAS) will take drop-in appointments for students during the first week of the quarter in Demaray Hall. These brief appointments are intended for students with Spring Quarter scheduling issues or who are on academic probation. Drop-in appointments will be available during the following hours: Wednesday, March 27, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thursday, March 28, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.; Friday, March 29, 9 a.m.–11 a.m.; Monday, April 1, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; Tuesday, April 2, closed for the inauguration; Wednesday, April 3, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.




Student Employee Appreciation Week April 8-12

All departments are encouraged to show appreciation for their student employees sometime during Student Employee Appreciation Week, April 8-12. The Office of Student Employment will host an "Appreciation Table" on Wednesday, April 10, in Gwinn Commons, 11 a.m.-2.p.m. Please encourage your students to stop by to receive a token of appreciation and enter a drawing to win a gift card.




Autism Lecture on April 2

University of Washington Professor Wendy Stone will discuss "Early Detection of Autism: Opportunities and Challenges" on Tuesday, April 2, 7- 8:30 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall Room 109. Dr. Stone will describe the early behavior features of autism, the challenges of early identification, and potential strategies for facilitating detection and improving outcomes in children. The lecture is presented by SPU's School of Psychology, Family, and Community (SPFC) Advisory Board, and is part of SPFC's Initiative for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Swedish Mobile Mammography Services Next Week

Human Resources and the SPU Wellness Committee have arranged for Swedish Medical Center to send a mobile mammography vehicle to perform private mammograms outside the SUB on April 4. If you're scheduled for a mammogram or past due, consider the convenience of having the screening performed here at SPU. Remember to bring your insurance card and primary doctor's name and address with you. Cancellations will be charged $25. Sign up online. More




Summer's Coming! Get in Shape During Lunch.

There are many fitness opportunities available on campus during the lunch hour. Take a co-worker and attend one or more of these sessions brought to you by the Wellness Committee.

Mondays, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Circuit training in upper gym in Royal Brougham Pavilion. Free.
Tuesday, 12-1 p.m. Yoga in First Free Methodist Church gym. $6 per session.
Wednesdays, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Circuit training in upper gym in Royal Brougham Pavilion. Free.
Thursdays, 12-1 p.m., Zumba in the main gym in Brougham Pavilion. $6 per session.

It's easy to pay for both yoga and Zumba online, and you'll receive a discount if you sign up for all 10 sessions. Links to make your payments for either or both are found on the Human Resources website under "Wellness." More




Reduced Admission to “The Thorn"

Faculty and staff are eligible for reduced admission to “The Thorn," often described as “The Passion meets Cirque du Soleil." Order Spring Tulips by April 5

SPRINT students are taking orders for spring tulips, to be delivered Friday, April 12. Orders are due by Friday, April 5. Weekly Zumba Starts Thursday

Join instructor Alicia Likkel on Thursdays for Zumba beginning March 28, 12–1 p.m. in the Royal Brougham Pavilion main gym. All experience levels welcome. Zumba combines dance and aerobic elements like hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, and mambo. Wear comfortable clothes and come prepared to dance your way to wellness. This is one of a few different activities throughout the year that the Wellness Committee is able to offer for minimal cost. SPU is contributing at least half the instruction cost for these Activity for Life classes. Employees provide the second half of the instruction cost. Unsure if you can attend all sessions? Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Scholarship

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and is currently junior? If so, we encourage you to nominate the student for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of their choice. Online nominations are due by March 29, and can be found on the University Ministries/Center for Worship Student Leaders website. More

Kathy Stetz, professor of nursing and registered Hatha yoga teacher, will continue to provide yoga sessions on Tuesdays, noon-12:55 p.m. during Spring Quarter (March 26-June 4) in the First Free Methodist Church gym. Take note that there will be no session on April 2 due to inaugural events. All experience levels are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a blanket, towel, or mat. Yoga is available at a cost of $6 per session or $50 lump sum (a savings of $10 over the remaining 10 sessions). SPU is contributing at least half the instruction cost for this Activity for Life class, and participants provide the second half of the instruction cost. Professors Invited to Leadership Retreat

Provost Jeff Van Duzer, Interim School of Business and Economics Dean Denise Daniels, and Professor of Art Roger Feldman were invited to represent SPU at the Leadership Initiative Retreat at Laity Lodge in Leakey, Texas, February 28–March 3. The retreat gathered a group of practitioners and scholars interested in Christian leadership at the intersection with such topics as mental health, the arts, work, digital media, education, and the significance of institutions. Roger has been commissioned to design and build a large outdoor art installation for Laity Lodge this spring.




Macdonald Gives Lecture

Mike Macdonald, emeritus professor of European studies and philosophy, was the featured lecturer during the 2013 Irish Festival at the Seattle Center, March 16-17. His lecture was titled “C.S. Lewis: Another Irishman Saving Civilization." The festival is sponsored by the Irish Heritage Club of Seattle. Mike is the co-founder of SPU's C.S. Lewis Institute.




Ward's Article Now a Book Chapter

The article “Lessons Learned" by Janet Ward, associate vice president of information and data management, is now a chapter in Leadership Lessons: Vision and Values for a New Generation, published by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. The book was published in February 2013. Learn more online. More

Twice a year, the John Perkins Center organizes “Urban Plunge," a five-day immersion experience designed to give students a taste of what it is like to be homeless and what resources are available to Seattle's homeless population. "Since I think you have published pictures of all my cats, I thought I would add this one, too. This is ‘Ebb,' who actually belongs to my neighbor but moved in through the cat door last fall and never left! My neighbor knows where Ebb is, and says his housemate, the cat ‘Flow,' beats him up so he seems to prefer my house, where my own four cats tolerate him (I think they are Mennonites). McKinley Auditorium

From University Archivist Adrienne Meier: “This postcard predates the construction of McKinley Auditorium, which was completed in 1944. The finished building looks very similar to this design, but a few differences in the placement of doors and windows on the front of the building are apparent, and the cross that tops the façade is not present. McKinley Auditorium was named for Rev. Charles S. McKinley, who served on the Board of Trustees for 41 years, and was chairman of the board from 1914 to 1927. The name ‘Seattle Pacific' was suggested by McKinley when the institution changed from Seattle Seminary to a college in 1915." Select the link for a photo of the postcard. More
