Early-Bird Tickets for Sacred Sounds of Christmas

Begin the Christmas season at The Sacred Sounds of Christmas concert on Tuesday, December 3, 7:30 p.m. in McCaw Hall. Sacred Sounds features SPU's nationally recognized Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra, along with many other outstanding SPU musicians. You'll hear the best of sacred Advent music from around the world, including traditional Advent and Christmas carols. Early-bird discounted tickets are available until September 30 and are priced at $16.50 per ticket; groups of 8 or more are $13.50 per ticket. Change in University Services Customer Service Hours

Beginning September 3, many offices in University Services will have new hours. The customer service hours for the Office of University Services will be 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, in the office building at 3220 6th Avenue West. The units involved are Housing & Meal Plan Services, Campus Card Services, Conference Services, and Dining Services. Also on September 3, Mailing & Copying Services at 323 W Nickerson Street will change their customer service hours to 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.




Cigna: Now What? September Information Sessions

Human Resources is offering upcoming seminars about the new Cigna plan.From Human Resources. "Did you receive your Cigna ID card(s)? If you signed up for the HDHP/HSA, did you receive your debit card(s)? Be sure to start your registration at www.mycigna.com. Your user ID and password should be the same as those used to complete the health assessment (survey) in May. If you don't recall your user ID and password, use the "Forgot" links. And if you never registered, select "Register Now." Finally, attend one of the following sessions for more information.

All sessions will include a representative and cover both Cigna plans. The portion applying to both plans runs about 30 minutes and includes information about mycigna.com with its tools and resources, as well as tips or techniques for how to get the most out of your plan. For HDHP/HSA participants, you will receive an additional 30 minutes of information specific to use of your HSA.




Conference: Is Christianity Natural? Evolutionary and Cognitive Science Perspectives

The conference “Is Christianity Natural? Evolutionary and Cognitive Science Perspectives" will be held at SPU, September 13-14. The conference is sponsored by Seminars in Christian Scholarship, Calvin College, and SPU. The focus of this conference is engagement between the emerging field of cognitive science of religion and Christian belief, practice, and theology. Does religious belief have purely human origins? Can cognitive science illuminate important questions in Christian theology and philosophy? Can Christianity challenge the preliminary findings of cognitive science and help set new directions for its research? The conference features a full slate of papers, discussions, and shared meals with psychologists, philosophers, and theologians, and is open to all who register for the conference. The Friday and Saturday evening plenary lectures are free and open to the public. The featured speakers are: Robert McCauley, the William Rand Kenan Jr. University Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture at Emory University
Justin Barrett, the Thrive Professor of Developmental Science and Director of the Thrive Center for Human Development at Fuller Theological Seminary

Cigna Hint #1: How to Reimburse Myself From HSA?

From Human Resources. “If you have an HSA (Health Savings Account), you know that you can take from the account only as much as you have already deposited into the account (via both the contributions made by SPU on your behalf and your own personal contributions). If you find yourself in a position where you need to pay for a doctor's bill, lab service, or prescription, and there isn't enough in your HSA, you will need to pay a portion out of your own pocket (another account, credit card, cash, etc.). To reimburse yourself, you can do the following: log in to mycigna.com; select "Review My Coverage" on the left side of the menu bar, and the select "Health Savings Account (HSA)" from the dropdown menu. Next, under the words “Account Balance," select the blue link: "Health Savings Account." Select "Transfers" from the menu bar and then "Withdraw from HSA," which shows up in a green font immediately below. Follow the instructions to "SetUp Account" and you will be ready to go when it's time to "Make [a] Withdrawal." Use this method rather than an ATM withdrawal, as ATM/cash transactions can raise red flags with the IRS.

From Human Resources. “When you need urgent care, you have choices: convenient hours, lower costs, shorter wait times and no appointment necessary for most locations. This link on the Human Resources website http://spu.edu/depts/hr/documents/urgentcare.pdf will show you urgent care and extended hours centers you may use. File this information away for future reference. Be aware — the myCigna smartphone app does not display these urgent care centers. Use the information found on this link, or contact Cigna at 1-800-Cigna24. You may alternately call the 24-hour Health Information Line (Nurseline) directly at 1-800-564-9286.

An article written by Center for Integrity in Business Director John Terrill titled "Messy Motives and Good Work: Lessons for Labour Day" was published in Comment, an online theology journal based in Canada. The magazine "strives to build a Christian intellectual, artistic, and culture-making community animated by the gospel; serving the people of God seeking the shalom of our cities." Alsbury Appointed to Seattle Task Force

Thomas Alsbury, professor of educational leadership, has been appointed to the Seattle School Board Task Force. The task force is a group formed by the Alliance for Education, an independent nonprofit supporting Seattle Public Schools. Since 1995, the Alliance has raised and invested more than $140 million to address systematic needs in the district. Since 2008, the Alliance has supported the Seattle School Board with a leadership development program. The goal of this work is to enable the seven elected officials and the superintendent to operate as a highly effective governing board by building norms and developing effective processes that can be sustained over time. In 2013, the Alliance convened a board-level task force to collect, review, and share best practices for characteristics of highly effective school boards.




Keuss' Edited Volume Published

Jeff Keuss, professor of ministry, theology and culture, edited a volume of the recently published Oxford University Press journal Literature and Theology, celebrating the 100th anniversary of French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. This edited volume is the culmination of three years of meetings for the Paul Ricoeur section of the American Academy of Religion, which Jeff chairs. Titled "Paul Ricoeur and Interdisciplinarity," the volume collects essays and papers seeking to overcome disciplinary isolation in today's modern university, and forging a renewed vision of collaboration in scholarship and mission.




Copeland Hosts Seminar

Assistant Professor of Family and Consumer Science Raedene Copeland hosted a seminar for women in her homeland of Trinidad and Tobago on August 25. Her seminar, titled "Woman Is Boss: Do You Know What Your Style Says Or Does Not Say About You?," dealt with the power of dress and behavior as tools for being successful in social and professional settings.




Hudson, Ryder Give Presentation

Debra Hudson, chair of special education, and Andrew Ryder, chair of theatre, along with teachers Kelly Hui and Jennifer Martin, presented “Education Is A.C.T.I.O.N.: Teacher Preparation and Practice in the Arts and Special Education" at the conference “Intersections: Arts and Special Education" on August 7 and 8. The conference was hosted by VSA, the international organization on arts and disability, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Their presentation focused on the important similarities between best practices in arts education and special education, using examples from the elementary classroom and the teacher preparation classroom.




Arabian's Chapter Published

A chapter co-written by Assistant Professor of Engineering and Computer Science Adam Adrabian was recently published in Equine Locomotion, 2nd ED, Elsevier, 2013. The chapter was titled "Modeling, Simulation, and Animation." The co-authors were Jonathan Merritt, Franca Jonquiere, Antonie Van den Bogert, and Hilary Clayton.

THIS MONTH IN THE GARDEN

Zinnias

From SPU Master Gardener Jeff Daley: A great, and often overlooked, summer blooming annual is the zinnia. Zinnias are easy to germinate and grow from seed. You can sow them after the last frost in well-aerated, fertile soil, or start them indoors, but not too early or they will get leggy.

Zinnias sold at nurseries in packs of 6 seedlings per container are a quick way to get an early start on summer with less fuss. Young plants are easily transplanted, but protect them from slugs. Deer-resistant zinnias thrive in full sun all day long, but avoid overhead watering of the foliage to prevent powdery mildew. However, they love a fertilizer feeding several times during the season. Their height makes them a great choice for planting in the center of containers. This is a great "pollinator pathway" plant choice for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Zinnias make great long-stemmed cut flowers for floral arrangements. They come in most colors except true blue. They will last in a vase of water for a good two weeks, still looking as fresh as the day they were cut. A change of water periodically will help prolong their fresh look. Zinnias hold up really well to drying with silica gel if you want to create a dried floral arrangement.

Originally found growing wild in the New World, botanists took seeds back to Europe and started propagating them. They were named in 1763 by Linnaeus in honor of Johann Zinn, a German professor of botany and medicine. More than 100 varieties of zinnias have been produced since selective propagation started in the 19th century.

My current favorite, and it might be because I am falling in love with the color orange, is "Zowie! Yellow Flame." It's a bright yellowish orange with darker orange rays on the petals. The white zinnias planted in the large containers at Brougham Pavilion are a great accent to the overall presentation, and they are called "Profusion White." The larger sized flowers in the planting beds are "Elegans Giant," and they have been hybridized to increase their resistance to disease and weather tolerance.
