|Athletic Conference Update, Strategic Planning Input|
Here's an update from our athletic conference, as well as a chance to continue to provide input on the Strategic Plan. I'm continually impressed with the level of thought, engagement, and desire to participate on this campus in achieving a better future together!
Athletic Conference Update
Concordia University-Portland has officially accepted an invitation to become the 11th full-time member of the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The invitation is contingent upon Concordia being admitted into the NCAA's membership process. Concordia plans to apply to the NCAA by the upcoming February 1 deadline, with a decision rendered by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee expected this summer. If accepted into the NCAA membership process, the Cavaliers would begin competing as a GNAC member in the fall of 2015, and be eligible for NCAA postseason play beginning in the fall of 2017.
As David Letterman says, "Keep those cards and letters coming." Thank you to everyone who has submitted comments, thoughts, and ideas either by way of this Bulletin, attending a Coffee and Conversation, or as part of the focus groups we are conducting. I'm continually impressed with the level of thought, engagement, and desire to participate on this campus in achieving a better future together!
Goal 4: Resource Development and Attainment
1. Design and operationalize a comprehensive development plan to expand capacity and achieve greater fundraising results.
2. Secure lead commitments and implement a broad campaign to fund campus master plan and achieve significant endowment growth.
3. Explore the feasibility and market acceptance of a summer institute that (1) showcases the university's biblical and theological expertise; (2) involves a number of SPU and adjunct faculty; and (3) provides a reasonable return to the university to support other initiatives.
4. To be developed through further campus engagement and conversation this fall.

|Flu Shots at Local Pharmacies|
Getting your flu (or other preventive care immunization) at your local pharmacy? Pharmacies need to bill your Cigna medical benefit to receive 100 percent coverage from either Cigna plan, with no out-of-pocket cost to you. Vaccines can be administered at a variety of pharmacies. (Select the link below to see the top six pharmacies in this area.) You will need to present your Cigna medical ID card at the pharmacy. Human Resources has found that some pharmacies have been incorrectly trying to run these vaccines charges through the pharmacy benefit. Feel free to print this flyer to take with you (select the link below) as it may cut down on instances where the pharmacy bills to the pharmacy benefit (rather than to the medical benefit). You should receive your flu vaccines at no cost to you. If you are having difficulty, you may need to visit another pharmacy in order to get your shot properly billed. A pharmacy not able to bill the correct medical benefit will receive additional instructions from Cigna if you provide Human Resources with the name, location, and phone number of the pharmacy. More
|Enjoy Pumpkin Pie and Support Summer SPRINT Teams|
This summer, SPRINT will send eight student-led teams to learn and serve alongside local Christian leaders around the globe. Support the summer SPRINT teams by purchasing 12-inch pumpkin pies for $10 each. To order, email student Daniel Lee at Leed13@spu.edu with the number of pies desired and your on-campus delivery location. Did you read about Shannon Huffman Polson in the summer issue of Response magazine? Shannon's memoir, North of Hope, chronicles a journey of grief into the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, rafting the Hulahula River to the place where her parents were killed by a grizzly bear. She returns to SPU, where she earned her MFA in Creative Writing in 2012, to speak at “Creative Conversations," a new series of events hosted by the Library. E-books at the SPU Library
University Librarian Michael Paulus and Library staff members Steve Perisho and Ryan Ingersoll will discuss e-book collection development and the technical details of how to read, download, and print from e-books. Bring your e-reading device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) to start reading an e-book yourself. (Kindles and other e-readers, such as Nooks, are not yet compatible with e-books owned by the SPU Library.) |Discover SPRINT on November 3|

|Encourage Your Students to Participate in SVPC|
Please encourage your students to enter the annual Social Venture Plan Competition (SVPC), in which teams from different majors work together and learn from each other as they devise sustainable businesses to meet real needs. It's all about competition, innovation, and creating social benefit – not to mention a record-breaking $9,000 in prize money this year! (The SVPC Showcase is scheduled for April 2014.) |Emeriti Health Solutions Representative on Campus November 6|
Find out how SPU is helping you save for health care needs in retirement. Current contributions to eligible employee accounts are $81.75 per month - up to $980 per year. Check your paycheck details to see if you're already receiving the contribution. On Wednesday, November 6, an Emeriti Health Solutions representative will be on campus to explain how these contributions provide reimbursement and guaranteed health care retirement benefits for those who meet the retirement definition. If you are planning to retire more than 10 years from now, or just generally interested in learning about the program, plan to attend the one hour session beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Library Administrative Conference Room (second floor in the Library administrative offices). The session will address reasons you need to save for retiree health care, unique tax advantages of the Emeriti program, options available under the program, and how to make your own contributions. For those approaching retirement in the next one to 10 years, the one hour session at 11 a.m. in the Library Classroom on the main floor or the 3:30 p.m. session in Otto Miller Hall 227 will address Emeriti insurance options and how they relate to Medicare. If you wish to ask your own personal questions separate from a session, feel free to stop in Otto Miller Hall 227 between 2-3 p.m. Spouses are encouraged to attend any or all sessions. |SFS Closed on November 8|
Student Financial Services (SFS) will be closed Friday, November 8, in order for the SFS staff to hold their annual all-day office planning retreat. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, November 12, after the Veterans Day holiday.
|Gwinn Commons Dining Hall Group Meal Requests|
If faculty or staff are planning a group meal (Monday-Friday) in the Gwinn Commons Dining Hall, Conference Services is happy to help. Conference Services is now coordinating meal service arrangements for all internal groups made up of 11 or more people when charged to an SPU account. This will streamline service to make sure your group has a pleasant dining hall experience.
Conference Services needs to receive meal order information at least two weeks ahead of the scheduled meal. At that point, a preliminary order will be placed. The department must make Conference Services aware of their guaranteed number no fewer than five days before the scheduled meal, and this number will be submitted as final. As we know, guest numbers do tend to change; we can extend service to 10 percent over the guaranteed number up to 200 guests, or 20 additional guests for groups of more than 201.
Meal tickets will be distributed to guests, which will then be collected by the dining hall cashier. Conference Services will provide an official count of meal tickets collected and bill the department accordingly. Departments will be charged for the guarantee number or actual count of guests (if higher) immediately following the event.

|Winter, Spring Reservations at Camp Casey|
Winter and spring reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates of stay are January 6, 2014, through June 16, 2014. Reservation requests are due by November 5, 2013. The winter/spring requests are selected by lottery and are not affected by summer stays at Casey. |Killingsworth Receives Award, Serves as Co-chair|
Assistant Math Professor Russ Killingsworth served as co-chair of the 2013 Northwest Mathematics Conference recently held in in Bellevue, Washington. The annual conference has the reputation of being one of the best regional mathematics conferences in the country. At the end of the conference, Russ received the Richard P. Stucky Award, given each year to an "outstanding promoter of mathematics who is making a difference in student learning of mathematics, either directly or through the training of mathematics educators." |Castelo's Chapter Published|
A chapter by Associate Professor of Theology Daniel Castelo titled "A Holy Reception Can Lead to a Holy Future" was published in A Future for Holiness (Cleveland: CPT Press, 2013), pp. 225-234. This chapter is a modified version of his presentation at the Wesleyan Theological Society and Society for Pentecostal Studies meeting held at SPU in March 2013.

|Ferreiro's Book Review, Articles to Be Published|
A book review and several articles by Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro have been accepted for publication. His book review "Languages of Love and Hate: Conflict, Communication, and Identity in the Medieval Mediterranean," (Sarah Lambert and Helen Nicholson, editors), will be published in Church History, (Brepols, 2012). His articles "Braga (Bishopric);" "St. Fructuosus of Braga; "St. Martin of Braga;" "St. Potamius of Lisboa;" and "St. Pacianus of Barcelona" will be published in Encyclopedia of Early Christianity, (Brill).

Issue 72 of Image journal is now available, and features an interview with author Robert Clark, who teaches in the MFA in Creative Writing program. From University Archivist Adrienne Meier. Alexander Hall, shown in this 1901 photograph, has not changed very much since it was completed in 1893. Apart from the chimney and weather vane, the exterior of the building is the same. There is still a bell, which has been helpfully marked on the original photo, but the current bell is not the original. The photo can be found on Digital Commons @ SPU, which facilitates the discovery and sharing of scholarly and creative work of SPU students, faculty, and staff, and is a repository for digital archival material.
