A Message From Les Steele
Dear Graduate Student,
I
am excited to extend a warm "welcome back" to all returning graduate
students and a warm welcome to all new graduate students. I hope this
newsletter finds you settling into your classes and new routine, and
that you are finding your courses invigorating and challenging.
This year, you may notice some changes around campus including the Student
Union Building's remodeled atrium. We hope this contributes in some way to
the quality of your graduate student experience.
I'm pleased by
the quality of graduate students at SPU, and want to thank you for
being an integral part of this community. Your presence is a key
part of our effort to engage the culture and change the world.
Blessings to all
of you as you move ahead this term.
Les Steele
Vice President for Academic Affairs
Notes and Reminders
Updates From Student
Financial Services
Account balances must be paid in full before registering
for future quarters (early registration for Winter Quarter 2004 begins
November 17, 2003).
To contact a Student
Financial Services representative to discuss your student account,
please select from the following list (organized by the first letter(s)
in your last name):
Graduate students
may also view account and financial aid information online by logging
on to the Banner Information
System on the SPU Web site and selecting
the “student” menu.
Credit Balance Update
Credit balance checks are cut on or after the seventh day of each quarter.
Resident students will receive an email when their check is ready to
pick up in Student Financial Services. Checks will be mailed to non-resident
students.
Students who would
like Seattle Pacific to keep the credit balance on their student
account to offset future charges must notify Student Financial
Services before the seventh day of each quarter. To obtain a credit
balance earlier than the time specified above, the student must present
an SPU ID card and request withdrawals of credit balances from his
or her account in writing. To allow adequate processing time, withdrawal
of credit balances will take 24 hours from date of request.
Please
include a student identification number and signature, and mail the
balance withdrawal to SPU, Student Financial Services, 3307
Third Avenue West, Seattle, Washington 98119,
or fax the request to 206/281-2835.

Summit
Arrives at SPU
Summit,
the regional library catalog of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, now makes
more than 22 million books and other materials available to SPU graduate
students. For those of you who have used Orbis borrowing in the past,
the only change is the size of the catalog and the name. For books not
in the SPU library (or already checked out) you may now search the Summit
catalog either through a direct link from the Library catalog Web page
or a “Search
Summit” button on any Web page that contains catalog search results.
All you need is your SPU ID barcode number. In two or three days, the
item(s) you request will be delivered to the SPU Library for pickup.
The Library will notify you electronically when the items arrive; you
have one week to pick them up.
New Partnerships
With Libraries
Free on-site borrowing
extends to the six new libraries in the Alliance (UW,
WSU, EWU, CWU, WWU and The Evergreen State College). That means you
can go to the University of Washington libraries,
for example, with your SPU ID and check out materials that are not
contained in the Summit catalog.
You must check at each library locally to see what is available for
visiting patrons. However, please note that loan periods for on-site
checkouts may differ from those requested through Summit .
For your convenience, all loans — both SPU and at other Alliance sites — are
listed on your SPU patron record, which you may check to monitor your
borrowing activity. Also, any materials borrowed on-site at other Alliance
libraries may be returned via the SPU circulation desk. For
comments or questions, contact J. Ray Doerksen, University Librarian,
at doerksen@spu.edu or
call 206/281-2414.
For TESOL
Students
New this year is
a “Two Quarter Teaching Practicum” rule. If
a student is planning to enter the teaching practicum phase of the
program, he or she needs to notify Nancy McEachran,
at least two quarters in advance.
In addition, TESOL
students are encouraged to attend the upcoming WAESOL
Conference 2003 (Washington Association for the Education
of Speakers of other Languages), to be held November 1 and 2 at Seattle
University.
Please check the “opportunities” section
of the MA-TESOL Web site (www.spu.edu/depts/tesol) for
the latest volunteer/work opportunities.
