Although the weather did not fully cooperate, it was great to open Hillford House for an autumn afternoon of fellowship and food. I want to thank all those who assisted in making it a special event.

The event was extra special as we took the opportunity to partner with Project Cool in a drive to replenish school and hygiene supplies that they distribute to hundreds of homeless Seattle children and teens. We were pleased to be able to collect:

Last fall, the Center for Career and Calling launched the “Mega Meet-up,” a hybrid event that is part career fair and part networking event. These targeted recruiting events give students an opportunity to learn about relevant jobs and companies in particular industries while connecting with professionals in a more casual environment. The first Mega Meet-up is Wednesday, November 8, 2:30–5 p.m. It features companies in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields and will take place in the Otto Miller and Eaton Hall lobbies. Professionals (many are SPU alumni) will be in attendance from over 25 companies. Visit the website to see who is coming.

Regardless of the theme, Mega Meet-ups are great opportunities for all students to practice networking and explore careers with employers and alumni. Please encourage your students to attend! The next Mega Meet-ups are February 7, 2018 (social justice and human services), and April 11, 2018 (business and government).

The 2017–18 School of Business, Government, and Economics Dean’s Speaker Series starts off with invited guest King County Superior Court Judge LeRoy McCullough on Monday, November 6, 11 a.m., in the Library Seminar Room. Judge McCullough will talk about his life, work, and path to the judicial bench. The event is open to all faculty, staff, and students.

Seattle Pacific’s Theatre Department will present The Hatmaker's Wife November 9–11 and 16–18 in the McKinley Hall Theatre. Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, November 18. Written by playwright Lauren Yee,  The Hatmaker’s Wife is about a newlywed expecting domestic bliss, but finding conflict and confusion. Her strange new home seems determined to help when former tenants come to life. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students with a valid I.D. SPU’s Jazz Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble will share the stage for this event led by adjunct music faculty members Dan Kramlich and Dan Adams. The concert will feature highlights of modern percussion music and a jazz repertoire in a variety of styles. This event is Tuesday, November 7, 7:30 p.m., in First Free Methodist Church. The event is free and wheelchair accessible.

From the Wellness Initiative: In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Office of Safety and Security participated in the Red Flag Campaign. Dating violence and “red flags” can be a common occurrence in relationships among college students. What are student perceptions of domestic or dating violence? There are ways that faculty and staff can support students who may be victims of domestic violence or dating violence. To learn more, visit the Wellness blog.

Preparations are underway for Tent City 3’s encampment at SPU from November through February. As in 2012 and 2015, volunteers are welcome to join one of our three committees: Food, Services, and Auxiliary; Campus Programming; and Church and Community Programming. Please email tentcity3@spu.edu if you are interested. All volunteers are welcome to help on move-in day on Saturday, November 18. If you’d like to do something other than lifting and carrying, we welcome contributions of lasagna, salad, or dessert for move-in dinner with Tent City 3. More information to come.

In recognition of her service to the SPU community, Jody Johnson, employment manger in Human Resources, was nominated and selected as the October Staff of the Month. Jody’s colleagues noted that she is appreciated as a “kind, thoughtful, enthusiastic, faithful, and gracious person who goes above and beyond to make everyone she comes in contact with (both within and outside the SPU community) feel heard and appreciated.” Congratulations and thank you, Jody! Assistant Professor of Sociology Joshua Tom presented a research paper at the "Race and Religion in the 2016 Election Season" conference on October 13. This was part of the 2017 Society for the Scientific Study of Religion's annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Joshua presented the paper with co-authors Brandon Martinez (Providence College) and Todd Ferguson (University of Mary Hardin-Baylor). They analyzed data from a nationally representative sample of white Americans from August 2016 to compare religious and racial explanations for support for President Trump. They found that 1) among white Americans, Trump support is associated with intensity of dissatisfaction across a broad spectrum of social grievances, rather than clustering thematically by content, and 2) white support and approval of Trump at that point in the election season was most strongly predicted by racial resentment, and to a lesser extent evangelical Protestant affiliation.

The second edition of Professor of Spanish Eric Vogt’s book The Spanish Subjunctive Up Close was recently published by McGraw-Hill. Originally published in 2008, the publisher states it "has established itself as the most effective resource for intermediate and advanced learners."

A review essay by Writing Instructor Mischa Willett titled "About that Albatross…" about the Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge was published in the journal Mere Orthodoxy.

Scott Edwards, chair and associate professor of marriage and family therapy (MFT), and MFT Alumnus Shawn Whitney, M.S. gave a presentation at the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) in Atlanta on October 8. Their presentation, Mentoring MFT Ambassadors, explored qualities and aspects of their 16-year mentor/mentee relationship, and presented a conceptual model for professional mentoring across time within numerous professional contexts of academia, supervision, clinical, legislative, research, personal, and the professional association AAMFT. Shawn, an AAMFT-approved supervisor, presently teaches and supervises as an adjunct faculty in Colorado State University master's MFT  program and has a thriving private practice. 

A chapter by Professor of Christian Ministry, Theology, and Culture Jeff Keuss titled "David Friedrich Strauss and Ludwig Feuerbach: The Rise of Sturm und Drang in Biblical Scholarship" was published in the recent volume of Eerdmans A History of Biblical Interpretation series. The most current volume in this series spans critical scholarship from the Enlightenment through the late 19th century, addressing the changing norms of reading scripture up to the dawn of the 20th century.

Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro presented the paper, in Spanish, “The Image of Babel and Pentecost in the Novus Ordo Ritus Hispano-Mozarabici: An Influence From Leander of Seville’s Homelia laude ecclesiae?” at the VII Congreso Internacional de Latín Medieval Hispánico, Universidad de Salamanca, October 18-21, 2017. This was part of the 800th anniversary celebration of the foundation of the University of Salamanca (1218-2018).
