Meet the SPU Staff Member of the Month for November 2017

Carla Orlando

Vocational Discernment Counselor and Instructor
Center for Career and Calling

Hometown: Bellevue, Washington

How long have you been at SPU?

Five years.

Tell us about a memorable day at work.

The day always brightens when I meet with students about an important decision or situation in their lives.

But being in class with students at SPU is pure joy. To see their anxiety fall away; to watch their deep lives of faith open up with a new prayer practice, reflection paper, or author to discuss; to hear the questions and the compassion they hold for a world that hurts and it’s people who need them: The day can’t get better than that!

How does your faith impact your work?

I see my work as an expression of my faith life and that contributing to the lives of college students as a great thrill. While an undergraduate myself, I sensed college as a critical time in becoming more fully who I was made to be, and for making choices about how I wanted to live my gifts in the world.

Unlike others who try many careers, my heart has always been drawn to the spiritual and personal journey of young adults and to those places that value it, like SPU.

Tell us the piece of your life journey that brought you to Seattle Pacific?

I was working in a study abroad context when I realized that students of faith hold their spiritual journey right alongside their questions about their major and their post-graduate life. I wanted to explore this further when I returned to the States and a friend shared that SPU had changed the name of their Center to “Career and Calling.” Brilliant!

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not at work?

My twin daughters are in their senior year at high school, so, I am savoring every second that I spend with them.

At this time of year, we are watching movies, building fires, attending school events. I am a field-trip mom this year, just like back in the early years, and I’m loving every minute!

What’s something that few people know about you?

I am a fourth generation Seattle native and realizing, with all of the new growth and development, that I am attached to the Pacific Northwest and trying to let go of my closed mind to change!

What’s your favorite part of your job?

The students!

Anything else you would like to share?

I do not take for granted the wonderful opportunity to be a part of this Christian college, it’s identity and mission in serving the world. I have a deep and abiding faith in what we do and why we do it.

Thank you for honoring me and including me in this special way!

Please join Staff Council in congratulating Carla Orlando as the November 2017 Staff of the Month!
