Meet the SPU Staff Member of the Month for April 2013

Jason Durocher

Head Athletic Trainer, Athletics

Jason is the Head Athletic Trainer for Seattle Pacific University’s athletic teams. He’s not only completely dedicated to his program and to his athletes, but he also has a huge heart, and is committed to serving his community.

Hometown: Simi Valley, California

Education: I graduated from Fresno State and with a degree in Physical Education and an emphasis in Athletic Training. I continued on to Whitworth, where I received my Masters in Physical Education with a Sports Administration emphasis.

How long have you been at SPU?
Almost five years.

What brought you to SPU?
I worked nine years as an Athletic Trainer at Hastings College in Nebraska before I came to SPU. I was drawn to SPU because I wanted to work in a faith-based institution. I also liked that SPU has a relatively small sports program. This gives me the ability to dedicate more time developing relationships and recovery plans with the athletes.

What's your favorite part about your job?
There are two things that I love about my job. The first is that my responsibilities are varied. There are always administrative tasks to complete, but I also spend lots of time out on the field, on the road with the team, developing recovery plans for injured athletes, and even providing emergency responses for severe injuries. The second is that I have the opportunity to interact with people. My position allows me to work with people at an extremely influential time in their lives — when they’re injured. I am able to help provide perspective and support throughout the recovery process.

What’s something that few people know about you?
I didn’t lose all of my baby teeth until I was in college.

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not at work?
Spend time with my wife. She’s an athletic trainer at Seattle University. Being trainers, our schedules are subject to the changes in the sports seasons and we are often on the road with the teams. So any time I get to spend with my wife is wonderful! I have also developed a passion for fly fishing.

Please join Staff Council in congratulating Jason Durocher as Staff of the Month!
