The MFA benefits from an ongoing relationship with Image journal, which is based at SPU. Over the past twenty years, Image has set an example of excellence as the world's premier literary quarterly exploring the relationship between the Judeo-Christian tradition and contemporary art and literature. Many of the faculty mentors in the SPU MFA are drawn from the community of writers that Image has fostered.

Among Image's literary contributors are Robert Coles, Annie Dillard, Horton Foote, Mark Helprin, Oscar Hijuelos, John Irving, Joy Williams, William Kennedy, Robert Morgan, Philip Levine, Dana Gioia, Kathleen Norris, Mary Oliver, Louise Erdrich, Robert Olen Butler, John Updike, Wim Wenders, Elie Wiesel, & Richard Wilbur. Image has published Pulitzer Prize winners, National Book Award winners, and a Nobel laureate.

Material first published in Image has appeared in Harper's Magazine, The Best American Essays, The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses, The Best Spiritual Writing, The O. Henry Prize Stories, The Art of the Essay, New Stories from the South, The Best American Movie Writing, and The Best Christian Writing. In 2000 and 2003, Image was nominated by Utne Reader for an Independent Press Award in the category of Spiritual Coverage.

In addition to its quarterly journal, Image sponsors the Milton Fellowship, an annual conference, a daily blog, and the Glen Workshop, which SPU MFA students attend during their summer residencies.
