Strategic Planning

On Thursday, November 21, the University Strategic Plan (Through Objectives) was reviewed and affirmed by the SPU Board of Trustees. The next steps in the process will be to develop the strategies and action steps to achieve each of the identified objectives. The full plan is scheduled to be presented to the Board in May 2014.

Seattle Pacific University will be:

KNOWN AS a premier Christian university that is orthodox, evangelical, Wesleyan, and ecumenical — selected by students able to excel at the highest academic levels, shaped by distinguished teachers and scholars, noted by a distinctive and diverse living and learning environment that reflects its Christian identity, and resourced with significant capacity to realize its mission and pursue its vision.

Strategic Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: Academic Excellence and Relevance


  1. Further academic rigor through high quality, well-resourced, and distinctive academic programs. 
  2. Attract, recruit, and retain students, faculty, and staff who reflect the priorities and profiles identified in the Strategic Vision and who sustain our vital Christian identity. 
  3. Foster intercultural competencies and global knowledge necessary to function effectively in society as well as to engage with the broader community to address local, national, and global issues. 
  4. Utilize leading and innovative pedagogical practices, technological tools, and delivery methods to provide an effective and efficient student learning experience.

Goal 2: Transformative and Holistic Student Experience


  1. Enhance and strengthen co-curricular learning opportunities in order to enrich the overall student experience and increase persistence and graduation rates. 
  2. Shape the student experience through the seamless integration of academics, student life, and university ministries. 
  3. Utilize a combination of curricular and co-curricular programs to help students think deeply about their vocations and to prepare for an effective transition to life after college.

Goal 3: Vital Christian Identity and Purpose


  1. Integrate a focus on character formation through curricular and co-curricular programs to express and embody the University’s distinctive commitment to the Christian faith and the person of Jesus Christ. 
  2. Embody the University’s grounding in the transforming gospel of Jesus Christ and historical commitment to human flourishing through a cross-unit, inter-disciplinary, curricular and co-curricular effort to address selected local and global issues. 
  3. Assess and re-design, if necessary, the current university ministries model to ensure a vibrant, engaging, and effective complement of programs and services.

Goal 4: Resource Development and Attainment


  1. Secure a consistent donor base while simultaneously expanding capacity in both the number of donors and dollars raised. 
  2. Develop organizational and donor capacity and system infrastructure to enable and support comprehensive fundraising campaigns. 
  3. Identify and explore avenues and mission-aligned opportunities for additional and complementary revenue lines that reduce dependence on tuition.

Goal 5: Operational Effectiveness and Efficiency


  1. Ensure holistic curricular and co-curricular learning model fosters desired “Known By” outcomes in the lives of SPU graduates as reflected in the Strategic Vision. 
  2. Develop a culture of continual improvement throughout the institution, informed by best practices, to ensure effective and efficient services and programs in support of the University’s mission and Strategic Vision. 
  3. To enhance institutional sustainability, continually monitor and assess proven trends and models in higher education for potential adaptation and application within the context of the University’s mission and Strategic Vision.
