The Rain Plan affects those ceremonies that take place outdoors on campus (Ivy Cutting and Graduate Commencement). All other ceremonies are indoors (including Undergraduate Commencement at Key Arena) and are unaffected by the Rain Plan.
The Rain Plan goes into effect only if there is a forecast for severe weather, including heavy rain and/or thunder and lightning. With such a forecast, SPU will send a Rain Plan Notice, via email, 24 hours in advance (on Thursday morning) of the ceremonies, to all registered graduating students and their parents, as well as faculty and staff. If you do not receive this notice, you can assume the ceremonies will take place, as planned, outdoors. Please, however, plan for the weather. The ceremonies will take place outdoors even in light rain.
If the Rain Plan is in place, both Ivy Cutting and Graduate Commencement will take place indoors, in Royal Brougham Pavilion. It is important to note that, once the Rain Plan is in place, the ceremonies must be held indoors, even if the weather clears up before the ceremonies. Likewise, if the Rain Plan is not put in place, and the weather takes a turn for the worse, the ceremonies must take place, as planned, outdoors (unless, of course, there is life-threatening severe weather, at which time the ceremonies would be cancelled).
