Technology is Changing Everything

It’s no secret that the rapidly-evolving world of technology has changed everything about the way we do life. From family dynamics to education, from paying bills to prayer, technology has redefined the parameters of what is possible (or impossible) in the world today.

And yet most Christians have not developed a healthy biblical perspective on technology--a “theology of technology.” Smartphones, tablets, and WiFi are now woven into our day-to-day lives, but we would likely be hard-pressed to offer a thoughtful response if we were asked to assess how technology affects our faith.

Fuller's Institute for Theology and Northwest Culture offers  rewiring://faith+technology  in response to the need for a more robust theology of technology. This innovative conference in Bellevue, WA focuses on the intersection of Christianity, technology, and culture, gathering presenters with backgrounds in technology, academia, and pastoral ministry to speak into the beauty, brokenness, and possibility of following Christ in our high tech world.

Why here? Why now?

From Portland, OR to Vancouver, BC, Pacific Northwesterners live in a region that is host to high tech heavy hitters like Microsoft, Amazon, Zillow, Expedia, Intel, and myriad startups. The Vancouver, BC-based Hootsuite completes what is a formidable 300-mile corridor of world-impacting technological creativity and entrepreneurship.

What is the church’s relationship and response to this highly technological culture?

Some of the questions we plan to address include:

  • How can churches better engage the tech sector with the gospel of Jesus Christ?
  • How should Christians evaluate the impact of technology on their families and culture?
  • How should pastors think about the impact of technology on the spiritual health of their congregations?
  • For Christians working in the tech sector, what is the significance of their careers within the mission of God?
