Two Biology students were honored at a special University Ministries awards luncheon on May 14, 2019.
The Barnabas Leadership Award is given to four juniors who demonstrate "servanthood", through Christian character and service to SPU and the greater community. Shun-Je Bhark (BS Cellular and Molecular Biology, '20) was honored for his extensive service to SPU, particularly as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Assistant and Laboratory Prepper in the Biology department. Shun-Je was described by his nominator as having "a unique blend of academic excellence, humility and kindness."
University Ministries also inaugurated a new award, the Perkins Center Prize, to encourage students to learn about the work of Dr. John Perkins, and to explore practical ways toward reconciliation. Katelyn Banks (BS Physiology '20) was one of two students awarded this prize, for her proposal for a campus-wide "Homeless Engagement Week". Katelyn's proposal was motivated by the question, "How can we claim to love our neighbor if we do not know them?", and is based on her extensive volunteer work with the Bridge Care Center in Ballard.
