ENG 3311
Elements of Narrative

April Middeljans

MWF 12:30–1:20 p.m.

Elements of Narrative concerns the field of narratology—the basic structures and techniques that form story and meaning.

This course will examine the technical elements of narrative (plot, point of view, rhetoric, voice, character, closure, gaps), as well as the larger philosophical and theological implications of narrative theories. Our case studies will be based upon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s collection of short stories, The Thing Around Your Neck. Adichie is an emerging writer from Nigeria whose work revolves around questions of identity in an era of globalization. Read an interview with Adichie in Image Journal.
