Katherine Nesse directs the urban studies program at SPU, an inter-disciplinary area of study focused on how we can be agents of change in urban environments. Her academic background is in urban planning and regional science.

Dr. Nesse teaches several classes in the urban studies curriculum including Urban Planning, Urban Public Policy and Introduction to Geographic Information Systems. Her goal is to not only acquaint students with the academic material but help them understand it so that they can apply it in their lives in Seattle and in their activities at SPU.

Her research is at the crossroads of the demographics and the economy. She is currently developing a method of estimating demographic characteristics based on the physical environment of residential neighborhoods. She also studies how people use the U.S. Census and the American Community Survey.
