Language for Specific Purposes

Students whose first language is not English but who are otherwise qualified for study at the undergraduate or graduate level often need or could benefit from support for their developing language proficiency.

Language for Specific Purposes (LCL 1101 for undergraduates, LIN 6101 for graduate students) provides an intensive review and in-depth study of English with attention to the demands of academic reading, writing, and class discussion. Cultural issues are also addressed.

The course is appropriate for international students whose skill level in English is less than 10 percent below the level of proficiency required for full admission. It may be repeated once for credit, and it counts as an elective toward graduation.
