Office: Lower Moyer B08

Education: BA, University of Oklahoma, 2002; MDiv, Wesley Theological Seminary, 2005; PhD, Southern Methodist University, 2012. At SPU since 2011.

Kevin Watson first joined the School of Theology faculty as an instructor in Historical Theology. He teaches the University Foundations courses in Christian Formation and Christian Theology, as well as a course on Christian Discipleship. Dr. Watson also teaches Contextual Education (field education) and United Methodist Polity in the Seattle Pacific Seminary program. While at Southern Methodist University, he taught several seminary courses at Perkins School of Theology. Having taught at the graduate level, Dr. Watson particularly enjoys teaching undergraduates and building relationships with college students.

Dr. Watson’s research focuses on the history of Wesleyan approaches to communal Christian formation. His dissertation explored the early Methodist band meeting, a form of mutual confession oriented toward sanctification. Dr. Watson is passionate about studying the history of Christian formation in order to help contemporary Christians re-appropriate important aspects of their heritage. He believes that the basic insights of Wesleyan spirituality are relevant not only to Wesleyan faith communities, but to the larger Christian community.

Dr. Watson is an ordained elder in the Oklahoma Conference of The United Methodist Church. He was the pastor of Lamont United Methodist Church, 2005–08. During his time in the pastorate, he wrote A Blueprint for Discipleship: Wesley’s General Rules as a Guide for Christian Living, which sought to reclaim the “General Rules” as a relevant and fruitful approach to Christian formation in the 21st century.

Dr. Watson and his wife, Melissa, have two young children. They already feel that Seattle is unquestionably the most beautiful place they have lived and they look forward to exploring all that the city and surrounding areas have to offer. He also wishes to make it clear that, though he is from Oklahoma, he was in no way responsible for the theft of the Seattle Sonics NBA team.

Seedbed, 2013

"A guide to the theory and practice of the Wesley class meeting, an essential element of truly Wesleyan spirituality, for clergy and congregations who are looking for ways to develop deeper discipleship. A Blueprint for Discipleship: Wesley’s General Rules as a Guide for Christian Living

Discipleship Resources, 2009

"This book will not only argue that it is possible to become a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ, but it will also provide practical, straightforward suggestions for how to allow God to enter more and more deeply into your life until you find that it is difficult to tell where you end and God begins."
