The Ames Scholars requirements over four years
During the course of Ames scholars’ four-year academic journey, the scholarship recipients must follow these requirements in order to remain in good standing with the scholarship and receive the full academic and personal benefits.
Year 1
- Attend Early Connections Orientation.
- Stay involved with Early Connections small group.
- Attend Early Connections events and activities as schedule allows.
- Meet with Multi-Ethnic Programs staff at least once per quarter for 1:1 mentorship.
- Apply for EC Leadership during Spring Quarter.
Year 2
- Become an Early Connections Leader. This is a paid leadership opportunity that includes $1,000 scholarship in addition to your Ames Scholarship.
- Attend Early Connections Orientation and facilitate small group activities for first-year EC students.
- Provide peer-mentorship for EC small groups beginning the summer before the upcoming academic year.
- Plan at least one community-building activity for EC small group per academic year.
- Attend four EC leader trainings/workshops per quarter.
- Participate in EC events and activities as schedule allows.
- Meet with Multi-Ethnic Programs staff at least once per quarter for 1:1 mentorship.
Year 3
- Ames scholars remain involved in leadership opportunities of their choosing during their junior and senior years. This could include involvement in campus clubs, on-campus leadership positions, a job that scholars already maintain, Early Connections leadership, an internship, etc. The requirement is intended to keep scholars involved with leadership that they are already connected to, interested in, and fits with their schedule.
- Junior and senior scholars have the option to apply to one of four Multi-Ethnic Programs (MEP) Fellowships run out of the Multi-Ethnic Programs office. MEP Fellowships offer a $1,500 scholarship in addition to the Ames Scholarship.
- Meet with Multi-Ethnic Programs staff at least once per quarter for 1:1 mentorship.
Year 4
- Stay involved in leadership position of choice.
- Meet with Multi-Ethnic Programs staff at least once per quarter for 1:1 mentorship.
- Graduate with a beautiful handmade graduation stole offered by MEP that honors scholar’s continued commitment to intercultural leadership on campus.
