Check-in and Move-in

Upper Gwinn and Residential Areas

Students with last names A–L can move in between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., and those with last names M–Z can move in between 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Commuter students are welcome to check in between 12:15 and 1 p.m.

  • On-campus residential students: Check-in held in Upper Gwinn for all residential halls and apartments. Access to your residence hall will be available only starting at your scheduled check-in time and not before.
  • Commuter students: Our commuter students are expected to attend the full Orientation program and can check in Friday from 12:15 p.m to 1p.m., and are welcome to explore the campus and attend the Welcome Dinner in the evening.

Student Services Fair

Come learn about all the amazing resources and supportive staff you have available to you during your time here and beyond. Our team is here for you, and at our Student Services Fair you can learn all about opportunities and resources you have at SPU.


2:30–3:30 p.m.

Student Financial Services Workshop

Demaray 150

Students and Guests are welcome to come learn about Financial Aid packages, navigating their Student Account, and exploring options for on-campus Student Employment.


4:30–5:30 p.m.

Opening Welcome

Words of welcome, introduction, and blessing from university leadership at the start of an exciting academic year.


5:30–7 p.m.

Welcome Dinner

Enjoy a complimentary, locally catered dinner and connect with other new students and their families. Dinner times are assigned to students and their guests according to their check-in times. If you have an early check-in time (8:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m.), you’ll be invited to begin dinner at 5 p.m. If your student has a late-morning or early afternoon check-in time (10:30 a.m.–1 p.m.), you’ll be invited to begin dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Academic Forum

Meet our Academic Deans and learn more about the vibrant academic life that your student will be getting involved in.

Leaving the Nest

i. What will you face as parents and family, now that your student is at college? Learn more at the final parent and guest session.


12–1:15 p.m.

Lunch

Enjoy a variety of local flavors as you meet other students and families at this complimentary lunch. Students meet back up with their Orientation leaders. Make sure to wear your lanyard — that’s your entrance ticket!


1:30–2:30 p.m.

New Student Convocation

One of the bookend traditions at SPU, this formal ceremony of initiation and adoption into the SPU community is led by faculty members robed in traditional academic regalia.


2:30–5 p.m.

Final Farewells

The family and guest portion of Orientation concludes at the end of New Student Convocation. This is a great time for students to connect one last time with their families and take photos, finalize any details, and to pray together as they step into this next phase of their journeys.


Before you arrive

  • Make hotel reservations in Seattle. Learn more about lodging and accommodations.
  • Be aware of your student’s check-in time:
    • If your student will live on campus (in a residence hall or in a campus apartment), they will be able to check in and begin moving in between 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, September 27.  Move-in times are coordinated based on the first letter of students’ last names.
      • Residential Students with last names A-L are invited to check in and move in from 8:30-10:30 a.m.
      • Residential Students with last names M-Z are invited to check in and move in from 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
    • Plan on arriving at this time to go through the check-in process in Upper Gwinn, then your student will be able to access their living area after check-in. Students won’t be able to enter their residential space until their designated move-in block.
    • If your student will not live on campus you’re invited to check in at Orientation Check-In (Upper Gwinn) from 12:15-1 p.m. If for some reason you’re unable to participate in Friday’s Welcome Dinner or Opening Welcome, stop by Orientation Central in Martin Square between between 12:30-5:30 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. on Saturday, or between 11 a.m.–4 p.m. on Sunday.

Arriving on campus

  • When you arrive on campus to move in your student, please follow the signs and park in one of our visitor parking lots. Once you are parked, proceed to Upper Gwinn Commons, our Orientation Check-In.
    • Please check out the campus map to see our various parking lots available to you during your time on campus.
    • Students, parents, and guests should all plan to check-in at Upper Gwinn.
    • To manage occupancy and flow, guests assisting their student with move-in will be encouraged to exit the residential area once they are finished with the moving process.
  • After check-in, you and your student will have the opportunity to visit the Student Services Fair in Martin Square, followed by an Opening Welcome ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. in Tiffany Loop. Please join us for complimentary dinner catered by a local Seattle restaurant in Tiffany Loop immediately following the Welcome. If your student received a move-in time between 8:30-10:30 a.m., or is a commuter student, you will be released for dinner at 5 p.m. If your student received a move-in time between 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m., you will be released for dinner at 5:30 p.m.
  • On-campus restroom access will be available in our Student Union Building, Weter Hall, and Upper Gwinn Commons.
