Jerry Carlson obtained his B.A. from the University of Washington and the Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley. He has taught at the University of California, Riverside for almost 30 years and now teaches at both UC Riverside and the University of Washington. He has authored or co-authored almost 200 articles, chapters and scientific reports. The focus of much of his work is in mental abilities, their assessment and the relationships between cognitive processes and school performance. He has been actively engaged in research on the cognitive processes underlying early reading acquisition as well as the implementation of PREP. He edits the book series Advances in Cognition and Educational Practice as well as two journals: Issues in Education: Contribution from Educational Psychology, and The Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology. He is a former president of the International Association for Cognitive Education and the recipient of several national and international research awards.
