J.P. Das, Ph.D. FRSC, was born in India where he obtained his first two degrees, a BA in Psychology/Philosophy, Utkal University, his MA in Psychology at Patna University, Gold Medallist. He obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry at the University London, England. Dr. Das was a lecturer in psychology at Utkal University in India; a research scholar in psychology, Institute of Psychiatry, University of London; Reader in Psychology, Utkal University, India. He received the Kennedy Foundation Fellowship and taught at George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, TN, as a Visiting Professor.
He was also a Visiting Professor of Psychology at UCLA. He returned to his alma mater for three years before coming to the University of Alberta as a Research Professor. He subsequently became Director of the Centre for the Study of Mental Retardation (later renamed J.P. Das Developmental Disabilities Centre) where he still presides. Dr. Das received the University of Alberta Research Prize (Kaplan Award) in 1987; and the Immigration Achievement Award (1992) from Alberta Manpower and Immigration for his work in mental retardation. He was elected a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada in 1999. Dr. Das has written and co-authored well over 200 articles and 10 books, including his two recent ones: Assessment of Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Planning, Dyslexia and Reading Difficulties. He has also written four books in Oriya language. A test of cognitive ability, Das-Naglieri Cognitive Assessment System, and a cognitive remediation program, the PASS Reading Enhancement Program are two recent publications that are being used internationally.
