Compensation & Benefits - Staff Handbook

Salary Adjustments

Historically, the University has adjusted salaries on July 1 of each year. However, the University may adjust salaries on a different schedule or defer salary adjustments until a later date.

Generally, paychecks are issued monthly on the first business day of the month. As staff members are paid monthly, any adjustments which are recorded on the time sheet will be reflected in the next pay period.

Temporary staff members are paid only for hours reported on a time sheet.

Employees should review their paycheck information (hours, vacation and sick leave accruals, etc.) on a regular basis and contact the Payroll Office immediately if there are any questions.

Payroll Deductions

Deductions are automatically taken from each paycheck for Federal Income Tax, Medicare Tax, Social Security, State Industrial Insurance, the retirement plan and premiums for such group insurance as the employee has selected. Other deductions may be arranged with the Payroll office for such things as direct deposit to a bank or credit union, pledges to United Way or to Seattle Pacific, and others.

Time Records

The Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Washington Minimum Wage Act require the employer to keep a record of the weekly hours worked by each nonexempt employee and to pay overtime for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a work week. The work week at the University is from 12:00 am Sunday through 11:59:59 pm Saturday. Each nonexempt employee is required to keep a daily record of hours worked on SPU time sheets. Time sheets are signed by the employee and the supervisor and turned in to the Payroll Office according to the schedule published by that office.

The University provides a generous package for eligible employees. Although the actual plan documents take precedent, summaries of these benefit policies, eligibility requirements, enrollment information, continuation of coverage and other details are fully explained in the Employee Benefits Handbook.
