The most common work hours for most positions at Seattle Pacific are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with an hour off for lunch. The employee's lunch hour generally does not count as hours worked.
Nonexempt staff may take a rest break of not more than 15 minutes each morning and afternoon, close to the middle of a four hour work period. Breaks are not intended to add to lunches or to shorten the workday at the start or end of the day. These two 15-minute rest breaks are included as hours worked by the employee. Nonexempt staff must take a minimum of a half hour lunch after working five hours of work. In order to ensure compliance with FLSA and the Washington State Wage and Hour Law, the University will not allow nonexempt staff to work through lunch.
Specific schedules are arranged with the supervisor and according to departmental needs.
Recognizing the need for Seattle Pacific University employees to maintain work, family and personal commitments, SPU supports flexible scheduling options that are mutually agreed upon by both SPU and the employee. All flexible scheduling arrangements must be cost neutral and contribute to customer service, productivity, and employee morale.
Flexible schedules may include variations in daily start time, or a compressed workweek providing those schedules comply with state and federal wage and hour laws.
Employees desiring flexibility in their schedule should give their immediate supervisor a written proposal detailing the desired adjusted schedule and how that schedule meets the requirements of their job description and the goals purpose of this policy. Immediate supervisors may approve proposals for flexibility, which in their view meet the purpose and scope of this policy. Requests for flexibility exceeding the scope of this policy should be discussed with the area dean or director and human resources. The agreement to flex a schedule may be withdrawn at any time if, in the supervisorís view, it is no longer in the best interest of SPU to continue the arrangement. The Director of Human Resources (or designate) is available to consult with supervisors on options for flexible scheduling.
Most staff positions are scheduled for full-time which includes 40 work hours per week, Monday through Friday, 12 months per year with a work day of 8:00am to 5:00pm and an hour for lunch. Some positions have responsibilities which must be carried out at hours other than between 8:00am and 5:00pm and some positions are not scheduled for full-time or 12 months per year. Those schedules are determined by each department. Although the University's general office hours are from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, department heads are encouraged to provide staff with schedule flexibility where such flexibility does not interfere with the department's or the University's ability to operate effectively.
