Miroslav Volf   Day of Common Learning Recap

Each Autumn Quarter, SPU closes offices and suspends classes for one day so that faculty, staff, and students can gather together to learn about a common topic. The public is also welcome. The event, called the "Day of Common Learning," embodies the best of interdisciplinary learning.

The 11th annual Day of Common Learning, held on October 10, focused on modeling civic engagement. Attendees heard a keynote address from Miroslav Volf, author and professor of systematic theology at Yale Divinity School and founding director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture. A rich assortment of 18 afternoon seminars led by SPU faculty, students, and staff also helped attendees explore such topics as "How to Fight Civilly" and "Modeling Christian Calling in the Field of Medicine."

women’s soccer team   Falcon Athletics Are Rocking the Pacific Northwest

By Mark Moschetti

SPU men’s soccer got back into the national picture last autumn, and has stayed there prominently through the first half of the 2012 season. After concluding a five-game road trip on October 6 with a 5-3 victory at Saint Martin’s, the Falcons returned home for five of their final seven regular-season games ranked No. 12 in the country.

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams have also been in the national rankings through the regular season, and both the men and women are part of the West Region rankings as they get ready for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships on October 20 at Western Oregon.

The women’s soccer team is in the hunt for the GNAC title and for an NCAA berth as well. The volleyball squad hit some early bumps in the road, but has bounced back and found its groove as September turned into October, putting together a three-game winning streak.

SPU was recently recognized by the National Collegiate Scouting Association as the top university in the Pacific Northwest for combined athletic and academic success. The Falcons ranked No. 3 nationally in NCAA Division II and No. 26 nationally in all NCAA divisions.

More information about Falcon athletic programs, including links to various Facebook pages, is available at spufalcons.com.
