With 62 majors at Seattle Pacific University — and media reports connecting specific majors with future earning power — your student may find the process of choosing a major confusing or stressful. He or she may even put off the decision as long as possible. To help reduce anxiety and clear up misinformation, SPU’s Center for Career and Calling has the facts to dispel common myths and help your student choose a major with confidence. President Dan Martin and Maria Hundley Hundley Is SPU’s Athlete of the Year
After winning two more national titles and helping the Falcons snare a second straight team trophy at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, junior Maria Hundley was named Seattle Pacific’s Athlete of the Year for 2014–15. This is the second year in a row that Hundley’s name goes on the plaque. She and men’s basketball star David Downs ’14 shared the award in 2014. Hundley became the ninth Falcon athlete to win it more than once. Read the article.

Meritorious Winners at International Modeling Contest in Mathematics
SPU students performed with top marks in this year’s International Modeling Contest in Mathematics, which challenges teams to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to open-ended problems in a limited timeframe. One SPU team each placed in the Meritorious Winner (top 10 percent), Honorable Mention, and Successful Participant categories. Read more.

Taylor Ford Inquiring Minds: Taylor Ford
Taylor Ford is possibly “one of the most genuine and enthusiastic Falcons on campus,” wrote Seattle Pacific’s etc magazine. This is how the junior educational ministry major answered the magazine’s readers who asked him questions about growing in faith at SPU, finding the best scenic views, and choosing a residence hall. SPULink SPULink Available Beginning June 24
If your student is looking for work this summer, be sure he or she knows about SPU’s new career development, networking, and student employment tool, SPULink — which will be available starting June 24, 2015.

The Center for Career and Calling, the Office of Student Employment, the John Perkins Center, and the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations are partnering to create a one-stop shop for your student to:
  • Find jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Connect with alumni, parents, and community partners for informational interviews and mentorships.
  • Get tips on vocational discernment, networking, résumé writing, searching for jobs, and preparing for interviews.
Parents: You have an opportunity to get involved, too! Consider joining SPULink’s mentor database and indicate whether you’d like students to connect with you for informational interviews, career meet-ups, job shadowing, or mentoring.

Students at Commencement Commencement Recap — and Photos!
On June 13, 757 undergraduate students became SPU alumni at the Commencement exercises held at Key Arena with more than 8,000 family members and friends cheering them on. This year’s Commencement speaker was Steve Moore, executive director of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and formerly SPU’s vice president of campus life. Meet the Class of 2015.

Grads and their families at the barbecue Forever Falcons BBQ Recap
Nearly 500 graduates and their families attended the first Falcons Forever BBQ on Commencement eve. Held in Martin Square, the BBQ included not only great picnic foods, fantastic prize giveaways — front-row seats at Commencement and one-night stays at SPU’s Fort Casey Inn! — but also a photo booth, a Class of 2015 banner for the new alumni to sign (and be brought to this Class’s reunions), a video time capsule, and a chance to mingle with Talon, SPU’s popular mascot.

“It was a perfect way for us to welcome the new grads into the SPU Alumni Association and give them a chance to kick back and celebrate with family and friends,” says Bryan Jones, director of Alumni and Parent Relations. “We will definitely be hosting this event again next year!” See photos.

SPU Payment Plan Is Online
If you and your student pay tuition in installments, you’ll find the 2015–16 Autumn Quarter Three-Installment Payment Plan application available through your student’s Banner Information System account after registering for Autumn Quarter courses. The payment plan divides a student’s quarterly charges into three equal installments for the quarter. Read more about payment options.

Students at New Student Advising New Student Advising Events
If your student will be an SPU freshman or a transfer student this autumn, you’ll want to make sure that he or she has registered for New Student Advising, the required event for new students. Although the June on-campus events are full, August and September events are still open. Two July events in California also have spots available. NSA gives students a head start on a successful academic experience at Seattle Pacific. Learn more.

Sharleen Kato and Gaile Moe FCS Professors' New Books
Family and Consumer Sciences professors Sharleen Kato (pictured left) and Gaile Moe (pictured right) have each authored new textbooks, which were released this spring. Kato’s book Teaching (2016), 2nd edition, was recently released by Goodheart-Wilcox, publishers for the secondary career and technical education market. Moe’s book (co-authored with C. Byrd-Bredbenner, J. Berning, and D. Kelley), titled Wardlaw's Perspectives in Nutrition (2016), updated 9th edition, was recently released by McGraw Hill Publishers for the college/university market.

Bruce Baker Baker’s Article Published
An article by Assistant Professor of Business Ethics Bruce Baker titled “Entrepreneurship as a Sign of Common Grace” was published in the Journal of Markets & Morality. Read the article (PDF).
