President’s Message


I hope this message finds you and your family well as your student begins Autumn Quarter at Seattle Pacific University. On behalf of SPU faculty, staff, and administration, I warmly welcome you, all of our new and returning families. I’m delighted to share with you some of the energy and excitement around campus.

This summer we completed the new Music Department studios along Nickerson and extensively renovated Crawford Hall. Our faculty prepared for your student’s classroom experience. Read more.

On September 3, 2015, Seattle Pacific University received the 2015 King County Executive’s Award for Community Preparedness. The award recognizes “outstanding efforts made by communities to respond to emergencies.” Read the news release.

Your student can log in to SPULink to search and apply for jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities; request a mentor; find out about and register for upcoming career events; schedule an on-campus interview; explore the career resource library; and more.

As a parent, you can sign up through SPULink to be a mentor, speak at an event, or help with an event. Learn about all the ways you can support your student in his or her career journey.

Vending Machine New, Healthier Vending Machines Arrive on Campus
University Services has partnered with a new company, Canteen, to update and expand the University’s snack-vending program. Sixteen new snack and drink machines featuring traditional snacks, healthy snack/drink combos, milk, and fresh-brewed coffee have been installed across campus. All machines are equipped with campus card readers that accept Falcon Funds. Check the vending website for a complete list of vending locations.

You are invited to experience the land where Jesus walked. Two of the Northwest’s most dynamic Free Methodist leaders are conducting a trip to the Holy Land in early 2016. Learn more.

Encourage your student to get ready for the Non-Profit Job & Internship Fair taking place Thursday, November 5, by bringing a draft of your résumé to a “Résumé Rescue Station” for a quick professional review.

Non-Profit Job and Internship Fair
Thursday, November 5, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

Students can meet representatives from nonprofit, public service, and government organizations at the annual Non-Profit Job and Internship Fair. They can learn about the work these nonprofits are doing, and get firsthand information on internship, employment, and volunteer opportunities.

Mom's Day Mom’s Day
Saturday, November 14, Upper Gwinn Commons

Enjoy time with your son or daughter — and gain new insights into SPU campus life — by attending Mom’s Day. Hosted by the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, Mom’s Day is the perfect reason to come on campus and enjoy a day with your student. Programming includes a yummy meal with Pam Martin, wife of President Martin; performances by the SPU Gospel Choir and the Taproot Theatre Improv team; an optional Argosy Boat Cruise on Lake Union and Lake Washington, and a Theatre Department performance of George Brant’s prize-winning play “Elephants Graveyard” in McKinley Hall. Talon Homecoming: Alumni and Parents Weekend
January 29–30, 2016

Parents, plan now to join the larger SPU community while connecting with your student at a range of events, including class visits, tailgate dinner, basketball games, student Talent Show, parents’ breakfast, and theatre performances. Rich in school pride and time-honored traditions, this weekend is an opportunity to come together as a community to connect, be inspired, and celebrate. Don’t miss one of our biggest campus events of the year!

Dad's Day Dad’s Day
April 2016 (date pending, based on game schedule)

Seattle Pacific University’s Dad’s Day is one of the most popular parent events held at SPU each year — and it is always a sellout. Dads, this spring event is your chance to spend some time on campus and bond with your SPU daughter or son over a meal, lunchtime entertainment, and a Seattle Sounders FC or Mariners game.



Faculty in the News


VanZanten Featured Speaker
Professor of English Susan VanZanten was the featured speaker at the annual Faculty-Staff Institute of Judson College, in Marion, Alabama, in August. Her address was titled “Joining the Mission: Your Place in the Narrative.” In the afternoon, she led a faculty workshop on “Using Narrative in Teaching and Learning.” The only women’s college in the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, Judson College houses the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame, whose honorees include Helen Keller, Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Tallulah Bankhead, and Zora Neale Hurston.

Physics Faculty Participate in Conference
Physics Department faculty members Rachel Scherr, Amy Robertson, Abigail Daane, and student Hannah Sabo gave a total of five talks, six posters, and one workshop at the American Association of Physics Teachers meeting and Physics Education Research Conference in Maryland. The group showcased work on video resources for university educators of physics teachers, conceptual metaphor in the context of energy, university student conceptual resources for understanding energy, responsive teaching, and research paradigms in physics education research.

Kolbo Exhibits Work
Associate Professor of Art Scott Kolbo exhibited a series of artworks during the Anacortes Arts Festival in July at the Allen Family Focus Galleries. Kolbo’s exhibited artworks involve combining video footage, animation, and static drawings to create humorous narratives about the “domestic futility” most of us experience from time to time.

Seattle Pacific’s flagship Facebook page has more than 15,000 “likes” from around the world.
