His Country Called: Crew Coach Jefferson Misses the Entire Season

RECENT WORLD EVENTS have affected the Seattle Pacific University community in many different ways, and the SPU rowing program has felt the impact as well. While the Falcon men and women are plying the waters just as they have always done, Keith Jefferson is thousands of miles away, serving his country.

Jefferson, head crew coach for the past 12 seasons, is a major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and was called up to active duty in November. He is missing the entire spring season while being deployed in Hawaii. Jessie Pennington is acting as interim head coach.

“I’m doing my little part in keeping my thumb on the pulse of the Pacific while the Iraq campaign goes on,” Jefferson explained recently. “The crew is truly blessed to have such a terrific pair in Jess and Trisha (Swatzky, assistant coach). They are coaching well, getting results, and it is very satisfying from a leadership per-spective to see that happen.”

While en route to a February planning exercise at Fort Lewis, Jefferson surprised coaches and rowers alike with an unannounced appearance at an early-morning training session. An added bonus during that trip: “I got to sleep in my own bed!”

From the President
Cultivating hope in the face of chaos is vital today. "This is the time for a Christian university to dig down deep into its formative foundations… and decide quite clearly what bread we have to offer,” says President Philip Eaton.

The World of Teng Chiu
Seattle’s Frye Museum spotlights an art collection owned by an SPU professor and her husband. Chinese artist Teng Chiu’s work has largely been forgotten, but Joanna Poznanska is helping to reintroduce him to the West. [Faculty]

My Response
“The soldier and chaplain are each unique callings fulfilled by those who respond to the call of the nation and to the call of God,” says Chaplain (Major General) Gaylord T. Gunhus, U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains.
