1939 JUSTIN LONGENECKER and FRANCES PICKERING LONGENECKER '42 held an informal alumni reunion with GARY HIGBEE '55 and NOLA WHITTAKER HIGBEE '57 at the Southwestern District Conference of The Christian and Missionary Alliance in North Little Rock, Arkansas, in October 1996. Each originally met their spouse on the SPC campus.
1940 VIRGINIA HEACOCK HELM lives in a log house in Portland, Oregon, that was built in 1949 and is included on Portland's list of Historical and Architecturally Significant Homes. She traveled extensively in the U.S. last year, visiting family and friends, and attending a variety of conventions, conferences and retreats. Virginia was social chairman as a student at SPC and wrote the "Meany Mouse" gossip column for The Falcon. She still collects penguins, a hobby begun when she was ten years old. 1947 DOROTHY STANBRA MEADOWS and her husband have retired and live in Southampton, Hampshire, England. They served as missionaries in Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam for 19 years before returning to England in 1975 when Vietnam fell to the communists. They spent another 19 years in ministry, mostly in the south of England. The couple has six children and five grandchildren. 1950 BOB HASLAM has taken on the responsibilities of pastor of friendship ministries at the John Wesley Free Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, on a part-time basis. He also serves as book editor for Light and Life Communications (Press). Bob retired from the position of editor of Light and Life magazine in December 1995. 1952 LOWELL MIKKELSON was recently inducted into the athletic Hall of Fame at Salem Academy in Salem, Oregon. Lowell was a starter in football and basketball for the Academy between 1946 and 1948, and held the school record for most points scored in one basketball season until 1981. Lowell went on to play basketball for SPU and to coach high school and community college basketball. A Sunday School teacher for more than 30 years, he now lives in West Salem and has made several mission trips around the world. MARTIN (OLE) OLSON and GUNI KELSTRUP OLSON send their greetings to the reunion Class of '52 by e-mail from Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The Olsons have interrupted their "retirement" in Everett, Washington, so Ole can fill in for the director of the Santa Cruz Christian Learning Center, who is on home leave. During their career, the couple has served God as educators in such diverse locations as Morrison Academy in Taiwan; public school and Berean Bible Church in Seattle; and Grace Bible College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Olsons have four children. 1957 SUSANNE VANVALIN HEISEY accompanied her husband, D. Ray, to Beijing, China, where he was a visiting professor in intercultural communication at Peking University. The couple lived on the university campus from August 1996 to January 1997 and Susanne tutored students in English in exchange for lessons in Chinese. The Heiseys make their home in Kent, Ohio. 1959 OLU ADEKANMBI recently retired from the Ogun State Polytechnic in Abeokuta, Nigeria, after 15 years as head of the Department of Business Administration and Marketing. He writes of his "profound gratitude to Seattle Pacific University for its many contributions - spiritual, intellectual and cultural - towards my success in life. More importantly, in writing the synopsis of my life history, I cannot forget Professor Clifford E. Roloff, Professor E. Walter Helsel and Mr. Pullen of the Maintenance Department under whom I worked as a janitor." 1961 JOHN CONROD lives with his wife, JOYCE DAY CONROD, in Lakewood, Colorado. John has completed his second year of publishing a Seventh Day Baptist internet newsletter, and continues to serve as vice president of the Bible Sabbath Association and treasurer of Colorado Meeting Place, a state-wide computer bulletin board for individuals with handicaps. 1963 CAROL KUNDE currently lives in Chengdu, Sichuan, People's Republic of China. She is teaching English in a sister school exchange between the Snohomish, Washington, School District and Shi Shi (High) School No. 4. Shi Shi is the oldest continuing school in China, founded in 141 B.C. 1966 ANDY BISHOP had triple bypass heart surgery on February 10, two days after he was honored as the 1997 SPU Alumnus of the Year at the annual Homecoming celebration. Following the successful surgery, he was released from Seattle's Virginia Mason Hospital to begin recuperation. The Bishops thank members of the SPU community for their prayers. 1969 GAIL ARNOTT has been appointed assistant dean of Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB) in Alabama. Now a colonel, Gail is completing 27 years in the U.S. Air Force and has enjoyed assignments at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, Vandenberg AFB in California, USAF Academy in Colorado, Randolph AFB in Texas, and at the National Defense University at Ft. McNair in Washington, D.C. Gail and his wife, Susan, and son Andrew are active in base chapel, sports and Boy Scout programs. Sons DAVID ARNOTT and STEPHEN ARNOTT are enrolled at SPU. STACY BERUBE is head of pediatrics at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Oregon. His pediatric practice has grown from four to eight partners in the last 15 years. SUSAN RYDMAN BERUBE served on the steering committee responsible for organizing Richard Foster's Renovare Regional Conference in Central Oregon, held February 14 and 15, 1997. 1976 DEBBIE WALZ SMERAGLIO is a registered dental hygienist working at Creston Elementary School in the Portland, Oregon, Public School District. Formerly a high school English teacher, she now works in a privately funded dental clinic at Creston which offers free services to children from low income families. Debbie lives with her husband and two children in Milwaukie. 1977 RANDY PHILLIPS and KARLA TODD PHILLIPS '78 live in Brewster, Washington, where Randy is a junior/senior high principal and Karla is an English as a Second Language teacher. Randy is active in youth sports activities and Karla works with a church youth program. The couple has two children, Todd and Ryne. 1979 HAL WHITE served for 16 months as editor of the Washington State Bar News, the official publication of the Washington State Bar Association. He has recently moved to Houston, Texas, where his wife, Angela, has begun a cardiac-thoracic residency at Baylor University. 1980 SUSAN KRAMPITZ WEIL and LARRY WEIL worked as volunteers at Allahabad Bible Seminary in Allahabad, India, from July 1995 to September 1996. They joined the staff of Christian Academy in Mozambique, Maputo, last October. This is a Christian school for missionary children recently established by OMS International. Larry and Susan are honorary missionaries with OMS International. 1981 DOUGLAS PERSON and his family recently returned to Ethiopia, where they work with Society for International Ministries (SIM). 1982 DEBBY HOPPER JOHNSON PLATT is working in real estate development and is president-elect for the Junior League of Denver, Colorado. In 1996, Debby started a new statewide non-profit effort to assist all congregations in Colorado to create children's programs for their communities. She lives in Denver with her husband, Ken. REVADEAN QUASTAD serves in Morogoro, Tanzania, East Africa, on the staff of Youth With a Mission (YWAM). Revadean works with a team of Tanzanians in the area of community development.
1983 ELLEN MCCOY JOHANSON is working as a resource associate for The Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence, located in Seattle. The center is a nonprofit, inter-religious, educational ministry that works with religious and secular organizations to prevent child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence and clergy misconduct. Ellen and her husband, David, have one daughter. 1984 SHARI STEELSMITH-DUFFIN has published a collection of board books for children ages 1-3. The Feelings for Little Children series is published by Parenting Press, Inc., in Seattle. Shari recently launched her own company, Raefield-Roberts Publishers, which publishes parenting titles. Besides writing books on family topics, Shari writes regularly for a parenting site on the World Wide Web (//www.parentbooks. com) and cares for her young son at home. STEPHEN WALTAR is an associate at Rehberg & Albertson, P.S., a 28-year-old law firm in Seattle. Steve's law practice focuses on areas associated with estate planning, including trusts, estate tax law, wills, probate, asset protection planning, business success planning and disability planning. Formerly, he worked with the firm of Rosenow, Johnson, Graffe, Keay & Moniz, and the firm of Mulligan & Associates. Steve lives in Bothell with his wife, Suzy, and their 15-month-old daughter, Kenzie. 1985 ALAN STARR has just completed his second four-year term with Wycliffe Bible Translators. He is serving with his wife, DeEtte, in Cameroon, West Africa, where they are translating the Bible for the Moloko people. The Starrs anticipate spending the next year on furlough in the U.S., returning to West Africa in 1998. They have two sons: Caleb and Peter. 1990 JOE DARDEN was a senior adult when he took advantage of the free tuition offered by SPU to those over 65 and earned his B.A. "Thank a million for the opportunity!" he writes. Since graduation, Joe has served as volunteer pastor to senior adults at Lynnwood Church of the Nazarene. In April 1995, his wife, Naomi, died. In January 1997, he married Violet Billey, and the two live in Bothell, where they enjoy visiting shut-ins, teaching Bible studies, and encouraging seniors. 1991 ERIC TAYLOR has moved from KHQ Television in Spokane, Washington, to KOIN Television News in Portland, Oregon. Eric has been working as a TV news reporter for the past four years. He can be seen on Channel 6 (CBS) in Portland. His work has been featured nationally by CBS and CNN. 1992 SCOTT KASSNER, former pianist for the SPU Singers, continues his music ministry in Longmont, Colorado, where he now lives. For the past four years, he has performed two back-to-back Christmas piano concerts to audiences of approximately 1,600 each. Scott released his first Christmas album this year and will be releasing a non-seasonal album in Fall '97. 1993 JON BARTLETT is a youth pastor at Hillcrest Christian Fellowship in Mount Vernon, Washington. MARCUS HAHNEMANN and his wife, AMANDA DAY HAHNEMANN '95, have moved to Westminster, Colorado, where Marcus will play major league soccer with the Colorado Rapids. Marcus was recently "purchased" by the Rapids from the Seattle Sounders. Once the couple is settled in their new home, Amanda plans to continue her work as a personal trainer. JENNIFER RAINEY lives in Sierra Madre, California. She is anticipating graduation from Fuller Theological Seminary with a master's degree in theology in Spring '97. 1994 PATRICK BERSCHAUER and JANELLE MARSTON BERSCHAUER live in Seattle, where Alan is employed in software sales for WRQ, Inc. Janelle is an eighth grade math teacher in the Mukilteo School District.
