1957


GENE PARKINS has retired from his position as executive director of Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF)-Canada. Prior to his work with MAF, Gene and his wife, HELEN HOPKINS PARKINS, served with a mission group in Alaska, and Gene worked as business manager of Aldersgate College in Moose Jaw, Canada. The couple now lives in Abbotsford, B.C.

1958


JOAN RAWLINS BIGGAR is the author of the new "Megan Parnell Mysteries" series for ages 10-14 released by Concordia Publishing House in July. She has written several books for pre-teens and teenagers which weave together history, geography and her personal experiences while growing up in the Pacific Northwest. Her first series, "Adventure Quest," was published by Concordia in 1992. Joan serves on the board of the Northwest Christian Writers Association.




1960


DARRELL REECK has been elected the new executive secretary of the United Methodist Development Fund (UMDF). He assumed leadership at the New York City-based organization in July. Darrell came to UMDF from Progressive Investment Management in Portland, Oregon, where he was senior portfolio manager. Before that, he was a professor of religion and ethics at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.

1969


LEROY NILL has moved from Lemoore Naval Air Station in California, where he was chief of pediatrics, to a position at the Bremerton Naval Hospital. His wife, NORMA GROSENBACH NILL '93, was recently appointed as a "co-laborer in Messiah" with Jews for Jesus, a ministry which aims to communicate that Jesus is the promised Messiah.




1970


BRAD HENNING is the founder of a chastity-promoting organization in Puyallup, Washington, called Life Resources. He has spoken to more than 150,000 students in Washington, Oregon, Montana and Alaska about choosing abstinence. Featured in an issue of Washington Citizen, published by the Washington Family Council, Brad says that abstinence is catching on among teenagers because "kids are understanding more and more that sex is not a sexual act alone, but a whole-person act."

1975


KATHY MURRAY BRITT of Kent, Washington, writes that six alumni who lived on the second floor of SPU's Hill Residence Hall between 1973 and 1975 met for a reunion lunch last year. Besides Kathy, the group of Washington residents included CAROLE MICHALSEN ANDERSON of Gig Harbor; NINA FORD BUMA of Bellingham; RHETA BUOY-SOMOHANA of Yakima; NANCY LOVE of Des Moines; and TERRI HAMMER SCHELL of Oak Harbor. "For some, it had been 20 years [since they'd seen each other]!" says Kathy. "Greetings to other 1973-75 Hill dorm women!"

DENNIS CARLSON began a new position as associate pastor at Salem Covenant Church in New Brighton, Minnesota, on July 1. Until mid-January, he and his wife, Mary Lynn, had been missionaries with the Covenant Church in Zaire. They were forced to leave the country, however, because of civil war and are officially on a two-year leave of absence. The Carlsons have two children.

1976


ELIZABETH ZARELLI TURNER is now associate rector of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas. Her husband, Philip, will retire from his current position as dean of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University at the conclusion of the 1997-98 academic year. Their daughter, Elisa, is a first grader at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Austin.

MARGARET CHURCH SMITH earned a master's degree in nursing from South Dakota State University in May 1997.




1981



TIMOTHY RUE
and SANDRA STEVEN RUE live with their six children in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Tim is a project engineer at a small software company called Logikos. The couple has had an interest in foreign missions but their recent plans to serve in Mexico with the Free Methodist VISA program fell through. Now Tim and Sandy are involved in developing a new ministry in Fort Wayne to Mexican immigrant workers.

1985


DAVID SCHNEIDERMANN is the founder of Unchained Productions, a Christian theatrical and video consulting company, and the drama coordinator for Christian Life Center in Aloha, Oregon. He has spoken, performed and conducted workshops in area churches since graduation, and will be a guest lecturer at the Christian Drama Improvement '97 conference in Portland. David lives with his wife, Michelle, and their seven llamas on a 15-acre ranch in Hillsboro.

1987


CATHLEEN GOETSCH, cancer prevention project coordinator at Virginia Mason Research Center in Seattle, is the 1997 recipient of the Oncology Nursing Foundation Master's Scholarship. The $3,000 award will assist her in her pursuit of a master's degree at SPU. Active in the Oncology Nursing Society, Cathleen is the secretary of the Puget Sound Chapter and has been a volunteer fund-raiser with the YWCA and the American Cancer Society.




1990


REBECCA CARDOZA LOPER lives in St. Maarten in the Caribbean, where her husband, Tracy, is studying medicine at American University of the Caribbean. Their son, Antonio, was born just four weeks before they moved to the island.

1991


KRISTI WRUBLE GLEASON and her husband, Brian, have moved to Flower Mound, Texas. Brian is the director of flight operations at Southwest Airlines in Dallas, and Kristi is staying home to raise their two children, David and Danae. They are looking forward to a special Christmas gift this year: the arrival of their third child.

COREY KALBFLEISCH earned his master of business administration degree from The Darden School at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in May 1997. He has taken a position with Vital Processing Services.

MATT LEBER is a developer in the Microsoft.Com group at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. In this new assignment, he is part of a team developing interactive content for Microsoft's web site at //www. microsoft.com.

SARAH THOMSON has taught in the Edmonds, Washington, School District for five years. She spent a year in Europe in 1995-96 and is going abroad again this year. She will stay with a friend on a small island in Scotland.

1992


STEVE CECIL has been named director of communications for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona.

MICHELLE GOLAY has returned to Romania, where she spent last year with Educational Services International (ESI) teaching high school English. This year, she will be teaching for a local foundation and has assumed new leadership responsibilities as a country administrator for ESI. Michelle hopes to spend time with her former high school students in an English club, and volunteer with orphanages and another relief organization as well.

1993


GRANT KNEPPER finished his vicarage in Redondo Beach, California, and has returned to Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He will graduate in May 1998 with a master of divinity degree with a focus in exegetical theology.

MICHELLE MILLER POWELL and her husband, Bryan, live in Simi Valley, California. Michelle has decided to be a "stay-at-home mom" and is caring for their infant daughter. Bryan is a design director at COW Interactive Communications in Santa Monica.

JENNIFER RAINEY-GIBSON and her husband, Eric, live in Alhambra, California, and attend Fuller Theological Seminary. Jenny is in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program and Eric is in his fourth year of pursuing a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.

1994


PAT ANDERSON, who earned her master's degree in nursing from SPU in 1994, has been promoted to vice president of patient care operations for Seattle's Swedish Medical Center. A 27-year veteran of Swedish, she is now responsible for all inpatient departments and 1,180 full-time employees. Pat is a member of the Washington Organization of Nurse Executives, National Association of Female Executives, and SPU and Shoreline Community College advisory boards.

SHELLEY COLLINS received a master of music degree in flute performance from Arizona State University in May 1997.

MARI OHARA FOUCAULTT is working for Valley Medical Center in Renton, Washington. Her husband, Julio, is employed by World Vision. The couple lives in Kent.

1995


SHARON BARR is currently working toward a master's degree in community and clinical counseling at Eastern College in St. Davids, Pennsylvania.

1996


SHERRI TREIBEL is a missionary to Africa with "Friends in the West," the organization which sponsors the African Children's Choir. Sherri first worked with Friends in the West when she served on an SPU SPRINT team as a student.

1994


DON KIENHOLZ attends graduate school at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. He is pursuing a master's degree in urban and regional planning.
