In Memoriam


BETTY JEAN BUCKLEY of Auburn, Washington, died August 18, 2000. She was 83. Born in Pueblo Colorado, Betty moved to Oregon in 1934 to attend Portland Bible Institute (later named Cascade College). She married LOUIS BUCKLEY CC '44 and as he pastored churches in Portland, Milwaukie and Salem, she used her musical talents to conduct the churches' choirs. She was also a member of the Sharon Trio, which represented Portland Bible Institute during the summer of 1937 at churches and camp meetings. She and her husband retired in 1990. Well-known to Cascade College alumni, Betty is survived by her husband of 62 years, two children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

JERRY CLEVELAND '72 died on November 3, 2000, due to complications from surgery. He was 49 years old. Jerry graduated from SPC with a math degree and a teaching certificate. For the next nine years, he taught junior high math and science. Then he spent 15 years at Automatic Data Processing, where he developed computer software. He is survived by his wife, Judy Cleveland, and two sons, including RICHARD CLEVELAND '99.

GARY WORTMAN '64 died of brain cancer on October 23, 2000. He was 59. In 1962-63, Gary and brother DAVID WORTMAN '63 co-captained the Falcon men's basketball team, which finished the season with a 16-10 record. He went on to coach basketball at Kentridge High School in Kent, Washington, and served as an assistant coach for the Falcons before joining the Seattle Sonics. He was the Sonics head scout and assistant coach from 1984 to 1992, and then moved to the Atlanta Hawks. This would have been Gary's ninth season as the Hawks' assistant coach and director of scouting. He is survived by wife Antje, two children, two grandchildren, his parents, two brothers and a sister. A memorial in his honor has been started to build a youth center basketball court in Atlanta.
