February 2016 | Volume 10, Issue 2
This year, 257 SPU students will study abroad in 27 countries. Helping students select a program, and providing guidance and advice, are two current SPU students who serve as Study Abroad “ambassadors.” We asked them about their experience studying abroad, and what advice their parents would give to other parents.

From the earliest moments of his church internship, junior Scott Swenson says the place felt like home — so much so that on his very first Sunday in his new position, he didn’t hesitate to fill in for a drummer who couldn’t make it to worship service.
Meet the 2016 Alumnus of the Year and the GOLD Alumna of the Year
Alumnus of the Year Tim Hanstad ’85 is co-founder and senior advisor of Landesa, a Seattle-based nonprofit that partners with governments and communities in more than 50 countries to strengthen land rights for the world’s poor by developing, monitoring, and implementing land-related laws and programs. With a particular focus on women, Landesa has helped more than 115 million families gain land rights. Read more about Tim Hanstad.
GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Alumna of the Year Moorea Seal McDaniel ’09 recently expanded a storefront that she runs in Seattle’s trendy Belltown neighborhood. She boasts nearly 1 million Pinterest followers, has published her first book — a guided journal called The 52 Lists Project — and has an online retail store at mooreaseal.com, seven percent of whose proceeds goes to a rotating group of charities and nonprofits. Read more about Moorea Seal McDaniel.
Spring Lectio: Hebrews
The Letter to the Hebrews is surely one of Scripture’s most enigmatic books. Its elegant yet sometimes strange language often puts it at arm’s length for some believers, which keeps it from being taught, preached, and read as a Spirit-sanctifying book that forms our life with God. Yet no other biblical book makes a stronger case for the indispensability of God’s word — scripted by the prophets and made definitive in the incarnation of God’s Son — for guiding believers into heaven. Join us online for the Book of Hebrews Lectio series starting March 28, led by SPU’s Paul T. Walls Professor of Scripture and Wesleyan Studies Robert W. Wall.

For parents of incoming freshmen this fall: You and your student can experience life on campus, talk with current SPU students, hear from SPU’s President Dan Martin, and meet other students who will also be calling SPU home in Autumn 2016. Students who attend are eligible for a Visit Scholarship! Arrange an official visit through the Admissions office before May 1, and your student will receive a visit scholarship for the 2016–17 school year ($500 for in-state students and $1,000 for out-of-state students).
Is your student graduating this year? The 2016 Commencement website is a helpful resource to assist you in making plans to attend any or all of the graduation celebration events.
From the Center for Career and Calling
How your student can land a great job after graduation: Do an internship
Summer is a great time to do an internship. More available hours equals more in-depth experience. The internship does not need to be for credit, but, if credit is required, your student must register for Summer Session and pay tuition. (Check specific majors for requirements.)
Center for Career and Calling counselors are available to help create a strategy for finding and landing an internship. Internships are posted on SPULink. And on Wednesday, April 6, students can learn firsthand about internship opportunities at our annual Career Fair.
Students with unpaid internships at nonprofit organizations can apply for the $1,000 SERVE Internship Grant. Stories from SERVE Internship Grant recipients will inspire you with the wonderful possibilities internships present.

Created by a team of talented student designers, photographers, writers, and leaders, Cascade, Seattle Pacific’s annual yearbook, encapsulates the unique experience your student receives at SPU — events, recitals, dances, and more — to create an all-inclusive representation of SPU student life. Owning a yearbook is the best way for your student (and you!) to look back on the past year. Yearbooks can be preordered at a reduced cost, so consider ordering one for your student.
